The idea stems from the typical Final Fantasy game, where players progress through the story to eventually confront the final boss so as to finish and view the ending. In Boss Battle however, you and the other HOW DO I WIN? players have each arduously arrived at the location of the final boss through different means, and only the player that deals the killing hit on the boss gets to see his ending, and in essence winning the game! In contrary to your usual Final Fantasy, it is no longer an mano-a-mano between you and the boss - it's an all out hack-fest where your enemies are also the other players! Be the player that lands the killing blow to the Boss! CARD TYPES GAME HP PLAYER CARDS BOSS 241 cards 50 cards 4 cards 5 cards CARDS 2 CARDS TOTAL: CARDS 300 CARDS GAME SET-UP CHOCOBO 6 HP HP HP HP HP HP HP 1 Each player starts with 1 Player card (chosen at random) and the corresponding number of HP cards as stated in the Player card’s stats. Player and HP cards are placed on the table face-up for all to see. (When players lose HP later in the game, this will be represented by having the HP cards face-down instead.) 2 Shuffle the Game cards and distribute five to each player face-down - these goes into their hand. Place the remaining deck at the center of the table. HP 3 SEPHIROTH 22HP Next comes the choosing of a boss. Pick a Boss card at random - that's the boss you’ll be fighting for the duration of the entire game. Place the corresponding number of HP cards as stated on the Boss card beside it. Instead of laying it out like you would for players, stack the HP cards into a pile. Finally, place both the Boss card and its HP right beside the game deck so that everyone can see it clearly at all times. HOW THE GAME WOULD ROUGHLY LOOK LIKE (MID-GAME) 3 HOW DO I PLAY? The flow of the game is as follows: Important things to note: 1. Decide who starts first any way you like. At the start of your turn, draw 2 cards face-down from the Game Deck into your hand. (Remember to do this always!) After that, you may play up to 3 cards on your hand. When you're done, the next player in a clockwise fashion then starts their own turn. When damage is dealt, flip the HP/Level cards face-down to signify HP loss. Likewise when HP is restored, flip the corresponding HP/Level cards face-up. For bosses, place the face-down HP/Level cards on a separate pile. 2. When every player’s turn has ended, it’s time for the boss’ action turn. A randomly chosen player will help the Boss draw 2 cards, which the boss will immediately play against all players. (or to himself, depending on the nature of the card.) 3. After the boss‘ turn ends, the cycle repeats with the first player starting his turn once more. When a player’s HP reaches zero he is considered dead – Look at the “Game rules: What happens if I die” section for more info. If the Boss’ HP hits zero, the player dealing the killing blow is declared the winner. If and when the game deck has been exhausted, shuffle the discard pile and replenish. Every time this happens, all damage dealt by the boss from this point on will double. (This is to prevent the game from dragging on too long!) TYPES OF GAME CARDS Spell For players, once played, their effects are activated and they are to be discarded. For bosses, when they draw these cards and damage is to be dealt, it is to all players regardless of whether it targets single or multiple targets. Conversely, curative and beneficial spells are to be played on self. Some cards will have instructions on how they act when drawn by the boss. Cards with other miscellaneous effects will be played as per normal. 4 Status Spell For players, once played they are attached to their targets for a stipulated time period as specified. Placed these cards beside the target player card. For bosses, they use beneficial statuses on self, and instructions will be attached on how to use negative statuses. Reaction For players, these can only be used in reaction to an action, ability or spell played against the user. For bosses, there will be instructions on how to use these cards. Item For players, these can be used for the effects as written on their card, or they can be sold to draw cards. The value is written on the bottom left corner. For bosses, use as per usual, even if it doesn’t have any effect. As with spell cards, all curative and beneficial items are to be played on self. Equipment For players, These can be equipped – placed beside your player card. They have abilities that can be activated for their effect. Doing so counts as having played one card. Some abilities can be used multiple times without prerequisites, whereas some have conditions that might cause the equipment to be destroyed. The same equipment ability cannot be used more than once during the player’s turn. In addition, equipment cards cannot be used in the same turn in which they are equipped. Equipment cards are also classified into different types such as Weapon, Armor, Helmet and Accessory. A player cannot equip two of the same equipment types. For bosses, it is discarded unless specified otherwise. Action For players and bosses, once played, their effects will be activated and they are to be discarded. There will always be instructions for the Boss’ usage. Level For players and bosses, when played, it is to be added to the player or boss’ maximum HP. For players, place beside existing HP cards. For bosses, place into HP pile. 5 ABOUT ABILTIES Player and equipment cards come with abilities that work differently. Action These essentially work the same as Action cards. These abilities usually count as playing a card when activated, unless specified otherwise. Each ability can only be activated once every turn. Action abilities that deal Physical damage are susceptible to Counter or Protect unless specified otherwise. Spell Likewise - these essentially work the same as Spell cards. These abilities usually count as playing a card when activated, unless specified otherwise. Each ability can only be activated once every turn. The difference between these and Action abilities is that spell cards are affected by Reflect and Shell. Passive These abilities are always in effect, unless the equipment cards carrying them are removed. Reaction Works like Reaction cards. These abilities can only be used in reaction to an action, ability or spell played against the user. They count as playing a card only when utilized during the player’s turn. Special Boss Abilities These are triggered by certain cards when drawn by the boss. Usually unblockable unless specified otherwise. GAME RULES A GENERAL G MEPLAY Maximum of 8 cards The maximum cards you can have on hand at the end of your turn is 8. The excess must be discarded. Finishing the Deck If the game deck has been exhausted, shuffle 6 the discard pile and replenish. From that point, all damage done by the Boss is doubled. Always... ...draw two cards at the start of your turn before doing anything. No cards on hand? If a player begins a turn with no cards on hand, he draws 5 cards instead of 2. Stacking statuses Statuses of the same kind do not stack. OUNTS AS PLAYING A CAR D? WHAT C Nearly all actions This includes selling of items/equipments, equipping, un-equipping, using player and item/equipment abilities (unless specified otherwise), playing of level, spell and action cards. Discarding cards Discarding a card during your turn when you have less than 8 cards on hand. Exceptions The only exception are reaction cards – these only count as playing a card if played during your turn. PENS WHEN I DIE WHAT HAP ? If killed by the Boss, you discard all your cards on hand, your equipment, your level cards and your statuses. Basically you start from scratch. Your HP cards are all flipped face-down and you skip your next turn. On the turn after, you are revived with all your HP restored, and you draw 5 cards from the game deck. If killed by a Player, the same occurs, except instead of discarding all the aforementioned cards the player that killed you gets to loot 2 cards from you and put them into his/her hand. Cards that can be looted are Levels, any cards on hand and items currently equipped. Status cards that are current played on the dying player cannot be looted. Then you discard the rest of the cards. 7 SPECIFIC GAME RULES & FAQ Can I sell my equipment without un-equipping them first? Yes. What happens when someone uses Zombie and I play Ore/Diamond to restore HP? Likewise. You lose HP instead of recovering it. Can reaction cards be used against Bosses’ abilities? No, unless specified otherwise. Then, what happens when someone uses Zombie and I have Poison on? Poison still works the same. Sucks, doesn't it? Can Omnislash be used against the Boss? Yes. Unless it is explicitly specified, most item abilities can be used against the boss. Can I play cards on the dead? (e.g. heals) No. If Excalipoor’s Zantetsuken? is used and the target uses Auto-Life/Counters the damage, does the removal apply to him? No. The damage must kill the player before he/she is permanently removed. Can items like Genji Helm (Reduces Physical damage by 1) reduce damage such that none is received? Yes. What if someone casts a spell at me and I reflected its damage to the Boss, killing it? Who wins? You do. It was your reflect card that killed it. Does Haste stack with Running Shoes? No. What happens when someone uses Zombie and I have Regen on? You lose 1 HP instead of restoring one at every turn. 8 What if someone casts a spell at two players or more and they both reflected its damage to the Boss, killing it? Who wins? OR What if someone casts at spell at a player and boss and the player reflected its damage to the Boss, killing it? Who wins? Settle it at your own discretion. Scissors paper stone, or whatever. For me I’d suggest this – continue playing with a sudden death rule, that anyone who dies from here on is removed from the game permanently. The survivor is declared the winner. What if it's a Player instead of a Boss? If a Player gets killed by two or more characters, he/she dies and no one gets to loot anything. Can I use Reflect/Shell/Counter/Protect with Cover? Nope. Cover is a stand-alone reaction card - you must absorb the damage in place of the target. Why would I use Cover on another player? Out of good will? Or maybe make a deal that if you saved his life, he gives you his entire hand. Go crazy. Particularly useful in Co-op mode though. What if I have Slow on me and I emptied my hand - Do I draw 5 cards on the next turn still? No. Draw only four. What happens if I've been Poisoned and a player casts Stop/Sleep on me? You still receive damage as per normal in the duration of the status. Can I use Reaction cards after using Moogle's Sneak? Since it's not considered a skipped turn, and reaction cards don't count as playing cards when not played during your turn, you may do so. Can I use Tiger Racket's Elemental Surprise on myself ? No. ALTERNATE GAME MODES Battle Royale The Boss is removed. Instead, 2-4 players battle against each other. Death means elimination here, and the last one standing wins. Battle Royale+ The same as Battle Royale, except that one boss is chosen at random and then shuffled into the game deck. Once drawn, the players have to work towards killing the Boss... and each other! The player who kills the Boss gets to loot all his HP cards and use his special ability for the rest of the game.
