CA ARCserve® Backup r12.5 — Virtualization Support Virtualization allows for efficient utilization of Server capacity, simpler storage administration, reduced energy costs, and better use of your IT investments. However, protecting the virtual server and its virtual machines is a very complex task, and involves subduing many obstacles and pitfalls. The Virtualized environment is itself a very complex, and needs to be managed efficiently and effectively. Implementing data backup for virtual machines in Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and VMware environment poses a huge challenge to backup administrators. CA ARCserve® Backup provides a complete backup solution for both VMware and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V based systems. CA ARCserve Agent for Virtual Machines enables you to perform image-level and file-level backups and restores on virtual machines, as well as file-level restores from image-level backups (Granular Recovery). It lets you set up a rotation or schedule of a full, raw-level backup and daily, file-level, incremental backups (mixed backups) on virtual machines. The combination of VMware and CA ARCserve Backup supports one-step granular file recovery from a VM imagelevel backup eliminating the need to stage the backup before recovering the files; resulting in faster restoration of file data. Additionally, with the VMware vSphere 4.0 release, CA ARCserve Backup can now move data directly from the VM to the backup media eliminating the need to stage it on a proxy server resulting in significantly faster backups.
Overview
Benefits
CA ARCserve Backup provides complete protection to your virtualization environment for VMs running on Windows Server Hyper-V, VMware ESX Server and VMware vCenter Server.
Supports VMs hosted on Windows 2008 Server Hyper-V environments.
Multi-streaming for Hyper-V and VMware VCB backups.
CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Virtual Machines also lets you protect VMware-based data residing on local storage and on a storage area network.
Reduces administration overhead by centralizing backup management on Hyper-V host systems
Perform File-level restore from image-level backup on VMware-based systems.
Perform mixed backups (full RAW and daily file level) on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and VMware based systems.
Allows you to perform image-level and file-level backups and restores on virtual machines. The user also has the option to use a new type of Raw mode backup that allows file-level restores from image-level backups.
Install/Configure You can install the agent while installing CA ARCserve Backup. The agent installation procedure is identical to the standard installation procedure for CA ARCserve Backup. The CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Virtual Machines is installed on all the VM‟s running on VMware ESX & Hyper-V based systems. Also, install the Client Agent for Windows in all locations where you installed the CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Virtual Machines. You can also use the CA ARCserve Agent Deployment tool to deploy the application agents on multiple VMs. For more information about installing and configuring the agent for virtual machines, see the CA ARCserve Backup for Windows Agent for Virtual Machines Guide. You must register one CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Virtual Machines license for each VM that you are protecting using CA ARCserve Backup. The licenses must be registered on the CA ARCserve Backup primary server or stand-alone server CA ARCserve Backup “Backup Manager” provides a tree structure to view information about the VM objects. It has a separate backup source tree for Backup proxy systems, VMware VCB Systems and Microsoft Hyper-V Systems. Each Virtual Machine under the VMware or Hyper-V sections of the backup tree has Local/Global options available to allow user to select File mode, Raw mode or Mixed mode backup.
To Populate VM details running on VMware ESX Servers: Install ARCserve Primary/Standalone Server. Install ARCserve Virtual Machine Agent on VCB Proxy Server. On VCB Proxy, select CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Virtual Machines under ARCserve Backup Agent Admin window. Select configuration button to open ARCserve VMware Configuration Tool. Provide ARCserve Primary/Standalone Server and VMware Virtual Center or ESX Server Details and click Execute button.
Virtual Machine Backup Modes:
To Populate VM details running on Microsoft Hyper-V Servers: Install ARCserve Primary/Standalone Server. Install ARCserve Virtual Machine Agent on Hyper-V Host Machine. On Hyper-V host, select CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Virtual Machines under ARCserve Backup Agent Admin window. Select configuration button to open „ARCserve Hyper-V Configuration Tool‟. Provide ARCserve Primary/Standalone Server Name and click Execute button.
New enhancements have been made to VM Backup Nodes to include File Level Restore from Image Level backups, and Mixed Mode to allow full backups followed by incremental/differential backups. FILE: Enables you to backup and restore individual files and directories within Virtual Machines. RAW: Enables you to backup and restore a set of image files that represent a Virtual Machine. MIXED: A Mixed backup is a rotation or schedule consisting of a Full, Raw-level backup and subsequent File-level, incremental or differential backups. Mixed Mode Backup applies only to GFS/Rotation backup and its makeup job. Raw/Mixed with Allow file mode restore: The new Virtual Machine backup mode lets you perform granular File-level restore from image-level backup of Virtual Machines. Select the checkbox “Allow file mode restore” in the Raw mode or Mixed Mode backup to perform file level restores from Image level and full backups. The checkbox (Allow file mode restore) applies to Raw Mode and Mixed Mode only. This mode creates a session for each VM image and sub-sessions for its internal volumes and applications. The internal session metadata is saved inside the CA ARCserve database. Based on the internal session metadata, the VM agent finds which VM image file and which position of the image file contains the file data to be restored.
Frequently Asked Questions Q:
Can we perform File- level Backup of Virtual machines when Virtual Machine is powered off?
A:
Yes, backups can be performed for both Hyper-V as well as VM-ware Virtual Machines even when the virtual machine is not running, but you cannot perform file level restores.
Q:
Which CA ARCserve component needs to be installed on the Hyper-V Host machine?
A:
You need to install CA ARCserve Agent for VM with CA ARCserve Windows Client agent on the Hyper-V Host Machine.
Summary CA ARCserve Backup Agent for Virtual Machines protects both VMware ESX and Microsoft Windows Hyper-V Virtual Machines. Besides Raw mode and File mode backup, it provides Mixed Mode and Raw mode backups which allows file-level restores for recovering individual files from image-level backups.
