What
What is Blood Pressure?
120 mmHg
_Blood Pressure is the measurement of two types of pressure in the body:
_The first (top) number in a blood pressure reading. This is the amount of pressure your heart generates when pumping blood through your arteries to the rest of your body.

Stress Induced Lifestyle
?
Clinical Confusion
_Users struggle to remain calm and manage stress _Stress leads to unhealthy decisions _Checking BP alone is stressful
_Dr.’s have patients keep a log resulting in dependency _People can experience white coat and masked hypertension _Patients blame it on their doctors which doesn’t solve the problem
What’s a Good Number?
Immediate Cure: Medication
_Users are not aware of what their numbers mean _If they do understand they are not sure when it’s too high or too low _Numbers fluctuate too often that users do not need to be so accurate
_Mixing medications can actually raise your blood pressure _Too many medications are hard on your overall health _Certain medications restrict an active healthy lifestyle which is what lowers BP
Tech Advancements
Patient Generalization
_Telemedicine + Telehealth _Bluetooth _Multi-Parameter Monitoring _Decrease in cost
_48% of users don’t have their blood pressure under control _Users trust in medication + medical professional _They leave their health concerns up to professionals _Professionals are not directly linking it to their lifestyle or health

Design Criteria
Design will be...
Elegant
Comfortable
_A design the user is proud of and would want to see it daily.
_A design that is comfortable will minimize or remove pain and anxiety while they are taking their blood pressure.
Calming
Simplistic
_If the user is calm it will directly affect their blood pressure reading in a positive way.
_The means to accomplish taking your blood pressure should not be complicated while providing a simple interaction.
Informative
Easy to Use
_A design that communicates the right information in a digestible way.
_The action in taking your blood pressure should be easy for the user to check multiple times without it requiring excessive effort.
Study_01
Study_01 _After using Quardio’s monitor I realized that even though it is compact, you still have to unfold it and run into the same problems as the older models about securing the device. Also the interface with the numbers still added to the anxiety.
Study_02
Study_02 _I gave a peer the new blood pressure monitor and observed how she put it on and took it off and if she knew whether she was doing it right. Getting it on and taking it off was not that easy and she was unsure if it was properly placed on her arm.
Study_03
Study_03 _I took blood pressure readings from some of my peers to see what it was like for them to have their numbers shown and how it made them feel.
Study_04
Study_04 _I mixed color samples to see if it is possible to deliver readings in a color format. Having some intuition about chromotherapy as a means to deliever readings, I then set out to understand it better after this study.
Application
Original Site
A New Source _All blood pressure monitors, until recently, has used an inflatable cuff that squeezes the arm to a slight discomfort. However, new technology has provided a way from users to check their blood pressure from their wrist and/or the finger.
New Sites
Feasibility
A New Measure _Measuring blood pressure can know be achieve by just the touch of a finger. It combines two different receivers - a photo-transistor as well an LED light. When read through an algorithm it reads blood pressure.

Test_01
Test_01 _From the first test I was able to recognize that their was a problem with the user knowing where to touch and the light was only moving upward instead of filling the room.
Test_02
Test_02 _Still the user had no identification of where to place the finger but the light was projecting better.
User Test_01
User Test_01 _My first user test confirmed that blue was a lower number and that red was a higher number. She immediately knew what stage blood pressure she was in just by way of color.
User Test_02
User Test_02 _My second user test allowed me to recognize that the contact point has to be explicit. He also responded to the blue/red in the same way as my previous user test.

Integrated System _ Vital uses a mobile app to visually record readings as well as display them on a diagram to collect information in clusters. There is a hue range that lays out weekly readings to create an overall range. Vital’s mobile app also sets goals based on readings to best accomplish a normal range.

A non-invasive blood pressure monitor that displays readings through the use of color in order to relieve stress and anxiety.
Reimagining Information The ability to monitor your blood pressure and understand your readings becomes complicated due to the system of numbers that was designed for the professionals and not the patient. By becoming less specific and more general, the patient is able to understand their own health in a simpler way. Vital is unique in that it focuses on creating a stress-free experience and feeling of calmness while taking your blood pressure. Nothing on the market uses a non-invasive method to capture a blood pressure reading while also communicating that reading in a digestible and clear way. Vital creates an experience around checking your blood pressure that uses chromotherapy principles to heal and provide for a simpler, less-specific initial reading. Most users suffering from high blood pressure are recommended by medical professional to monitor at home so that they can be more aware and in charge of their health. The aesthetics of the monitor allow the user to know exactly where the finger sensor is while directly experiencing an ambient lighting presence that is direct and illuminates gently in a therapeutic way.
Feasibility
Vital combines two recievers - a phototransistor and an LED light that when read through an algorithm reads blood pressure just by a touch. Vital has been designed for disassembly with the electronic components separated from the product housing. Vital also uses LED lights that will survive for up to 50,000 hours with a cord for an electrical outlet. None of the plastics (polycarbonate, polypropylene) are co-mingled and the infrastructure is not reliant on technological updates. Vital is comprised of a polypropylene top and base that houses the phototransistor and the LED lights. The cone is made of polycarbonate to to reveal transparency as well as strength. The LED lights are housed in the base and communicate to the finger sensor. There is a cord to plug into an electrical outlet so no batteries are required. The monitor is assembled for disassembly and recycling of individual plastics.
Chromotherapy Psychologists have found that colors affect our preferences, characters, behavior, and personality. Chromotherapy can heal and provide harmony based on frequencies throughout the body that when exposed to different lights elicit subconscious responses. Treatment with the appropriate color could restore balance and normal functioning while relieving stress and anxiety. Vital exists to serve as a beacon of information that sits on a nightstand so that the user is able to check in the morning and in the evening. These are the best times of the day and prescribed by their doctor to get an accurate, unbiased reading. Vital uses color to communicate a reading range, which is less specific and does accurately communicate which stage of blood pressure they are in. The color was tested by users to see if they were able to understand their blood pressure range through the use of chromotherapy.
Summary Vital is a non-invasive blood pressure monitor that displays readings through the use of color in order to relieve stress and anxiety. Blood pressure is relatively a measure of stress in your body on physiological level, however it seems inadequate to measure stress through a stressful experience. A person suffering from high blood pressure typically relies on their doctor to understand their blood pressure. Vital exists to serve as a beacon of information that sits on a nightstand so that the user is able to check in the morning and in the evening. These are the best times of the day to check and prescribed by their doctor to get an accurate, unbiased reading. Vital also uses color to communicate a reading range, which is less specific and does accurately communicate which stage of blood pressure they are in. The color was tested by users to see if they were able to understand their blood pressure range through the use of chromotherapy. Vital uses a non-invasive method to capture a reading from a finger print through an algorithm that uses a phototransistor and an LED light. Users typically do not leave blood pressure monitors in a visible place, but Vital exists to be shown as a beautiful object that does not evoke typical medical devices.
