PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE) Safety glasses or face shield must be worn at all times in work areas.
Long and loose hair must be tied back
Appropriate footwear must be worn. Shoe must be fully enclosed. No open toed shoes.
Close fitting/protective clothing must be worn. Remove strings hanging from pullovers/sweaters.
Rings and jewelry (long necklaces / bracelets, etc.) must not be worn.
Hearing protection must be worn when using this machine.

SAFE WORK PROCEDURE
DO NOT use this machine unless a teacher has instructed you in its safe use and operation and has given permission. OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS: 1. Check workspaces and walkways to ensure no slip/trip hazards are present. 2. Locate and ensure you are familiar with the operation of the ON/OFF starter and E-Stop (if fitted). 3. Use only materials free from defects. 4. Ensure the sanding drum is securely locked in the chuck. 5. Ensure the key is removed from the chuck before turning on the power. 6. Machine must be isolated while drill bits are being installed. 7. All drill presses must be equipped with guards. It is against division policy to remove a guard. 8. Remove all adjusting keys and wrenches from the work surface prior to turning on the drill. 9. Faulty equipment must not be used. Immediately report suspect machinery to your teacher.

10. Never leave the machine running unattended. Do not leave the machine until the bit has come to a complete stop. 11. Before making adjustments switch off and bring the machine to a complete standstill. 12. Never start the drill press with the sanding drum pressed against the work piece. 13. Adjust the table to sit no greater than 3mm from sanding drum. 14. Always stop the drill before removing scrap pieces form the table. 15. Always keep hands and fingers away from the bit. 16. Always feed work piece against the direction of the sanding drum rotation 17. Keep the material under light pressure to prevent loading the abrasive and burning your project 18. Do not sand small pieces use a different tool OPERATING THE DRILL PRESS: 1. Don all personal protective equipment: safety glasses / face shield, hearing protection, proper footwear (closed toe / heal shoes). Remove all jewelry; loose clothing and tie back hair. DO NOT wear gloves when operating the drill press. 2. Ensure the 0n/Off switch is in the “off” position and plug the machine into properly grounded power source. 3. Replace any abrasive belts that are worn, frayed or excessively worn in spots. 4. Ensure the correct size sanding drum in place. Do not use dull or damaged bits. Insert the bit into the jaws. Turn the chuck barrel counterclockwise with the chuck key to tighten the jaws onto the bit. 5. Clean / clear work area/surfaces of unused tools / material. Place material to be sanded onto the table, well away from the sanding drum. Never start the machine with the stock in contact with the sanding drum. 6. Adjust the table height by loosening the table clamp handle and turning the table raising and lowering handle. Ensure the table is no greater than 3mm from the sanding drum. Tighten the handle. 7. Sanding material: a) Turn on power and let machine come to full speed. Push the stop button after each use. Do not leave the sander running unattended. b) Turn on the local exhaust ventilation. c) Use both hands to hold the material. Feed the work piece against the direction of the sanding drum rotation. d) Maintain a 10cm (4 inch) distance from the sanding drum with fingers and use a jig or holding device for smaller pieces. 6. When work has been completed, turn off the sander and stay till machine comes to a complete stop.

7. When the machine has stopped remove any debris with a stick or brush. Remove material from the table and clean the area. If there is a lot of saw dust, wear a dust mask while cleaning the area.
