Coherent StingRay μFocus LASER RADIATION AVOID EXPOSURE TO BEAM CLASS 3B LASER PRODUCT
IEC 60825-1(2007)
Laser Safety and Installation Quick Start Guide
Laser light, because of its special properties, can cause safety hazards not related to light from common sources. The safe use of lasers requires that all laser users and all persons near the laser system understand the possible danger. The safe use of the laser depends on the user understanding the instrument and the properties of coherent, strong beams of light.
Laser beams can burn volatile substances like alcohol, gasoline, ether and other solvents, and can damage lightsensitive elements in video cameras, photomultipliers, and photodiodes. Reflected beams can cause damage. To prevent these conditions, follow these precautions: • Follow all safety precautions in the operator’s manual.
INVISIBLE LASER RADIATION AVOID EXPOSURE TO BEAM CLASS 3B LASER PRODUCT
IEC 60825-1(2007)
• Be careful when using solvents in the area of the laser. DANGER! Direct eye contact with the output beam from the laser will cause damage and possible injury to the eyes.
WARNING! Wearing laser safety eyewear can be a hazard and a benefit: They protect the eyes from possible exposure damage, but also block light at the laser wavelengths, which prevents the operator from seeing the beam. Always use caution when wearing safety eyewear.
• Limit laser access to qualified users who know laser safety practices and understand the possible danger. • Never look directly into the laser light source or at scattered laser light from any reflective surface. • Never sight down the beam into the source. • Keep experimental setups at low heights to prevent accidental beam-eye encounter at eye level.
• As a precaution against accidental exposure to the output beam or its reflection, persons using the system must wear laser safety eyewear as required by the wavelength being created. • Use the laser in an enclosed room. Laser light remains collimated for long distances and presents a possible hazard if not controlled. • Display warning signs in the area of the laser beam to tell persons of the possible danger.

• Tell all persons using the laser of these precautions. • Operate the laser in a room with controlled and restricted access.
Electrical Safety The Coherent StingRay μFocus laser does not have dangerous voltages. Do not disassemble the enclosure. There are no user-serviceable components inside. All units can be operated as assembled. Warranty is cancelled if the enclosure is disassembled.
Optional Software Installation Coherent Connection software is included with the purchase of a StingRay Controller or Controller Kit. The software can also be bought separately (1258561). To install: 1) Close all programs. 2) Put the memory drive into a USB port on your computer. 3) Double-click the .exe installation file. For complete operating instructions refer to the Coherent StingRay Series Operator’s Manual (1223124), provided in PDF format on the StingRay USB memory drive and on the Coherent website: www.Coherent.com/StingRay. -6-
Laser Installation OEM System This section describes how to get the laser to run in CW mode without the laser controller. For more information—including specifics on modulation, interfacing, installation, and heatsinking—refer to the Coherent StingRay Series Operator's Manual (1223124), provided in PDF format on the StingRay USB memory drive and on the Coherent website: www.Coherent.com/StingRay.

StingRay μFocus Laser (with Flying Lead)
Refer to the “Optical Safety” topic in this guide and in the Coherent StingRay Series Operator’s Manual (1223124) for the optical safety information. Note: In this configuration the laser is NOT CDRH compliant for end-use applications. When input voltage is applied, the laser will start emitting in 5 seconds (safety delay). Care should be taken to use correct safety protocols when you operate this laser in the OEM component configuration.
* Available on StingRay μFocus lasers that include the optional RS-232 configuration.

Laser
Refer to the “Optical Safety” topic in this guide and in the Coherent StingRay Series Operator’s Manual (1223124) for the optical safety information.
For information about fault conditions, refer to the Coherent StingRay Series Operator's Manual (1223124).
Note: In this configuration the laser is CDRH compliant for end-use applications. The laser will not start emission until the interlock and key switch are enabled and power is applied to the controller. When these conditions are met and input voltage is applied, the laser will start emitting in 5 seconds (safety delay).

• Coherent Connection Software—This software can be used to interface with lasers that have the RS-232 communication option enabled. The software is included with the purchase of a StingRay Laser Controller or can be purchased separately (1258561) for a StingRay μFocus laser (without a controller) that is configured with RS-232 communications. For information on communication protocols, refer to the Coherent StingRay Series Operator’s Manual (1223124).
CDRH-Compliant System Installation Procedure
1
Connect the laser to the controller.
Laser Controller
Controller Power Supply (1105427)
• A mini-USB cable is needed to connect the laser controller to a PC. This cable is included with the purchase of a StingRay Controller Kit (1231404) and is also sold separately (1108906). - 13 -

Mounting 2
Connect the power supply to the controller.
3
Ensure the interlock is in place.
Correctly mounting the laser diode for heat dissipation is critical to laser lifetime and performance. Any laser more than 20 mW should be mounted to supply correct heatsinking. Correct heatsinking needs to make full radial contact with the mounting area. V-block mounts are not recommended. See the Coherent StingRay Series Operator's Manual (1223124) for information on power dissipation and mounting specifications. Mounting Area
