CX Data Transfer Application
OVERVIEW The Data Transfer Utility enables the user to transfer data between a KVM switch and a data file. In this way, large lists of computer names, connections and users can be created on a PC and sent to a KVM switch and existing lists can be saved to a PC from a KVM switch. The utility transfers data using an RS232 connection and requires the user to create a suitable TXT file (or to save the existing KVM data to a TXT file) and to set the KVM switch into the correct data transfer mode using the switch OSD. HOW TO USE THE UTILITY The DataTransfer.exe utility is self-contained and requires no installation. If you wish to copy the file to a different location, you might wish to copy this help file (DataTransfer.chm) as well. Double-click on the DataTransfer.exe icon and you will be presented with a dialog box with the following options: File to transfer: [file name selection edit box] Browse... button. Unit to File button. File to Unit button. Help button. Configuration button. [A status text box] Quit button. Browse... The Browse... button allows you to select the file containing the data you wish to send to the KVM switch or the file to receive data from the KVM switch. You will be asked to confirm your selection. Please be sure that you wish to make the desired transfer as it
cannot be undone once transferred. The full file name of the file is displayed in the edit box, you can use the mouse to select the file name text and drag to see any text not within the window bounds. You can also use this method to edit the name, for example, if you wished to increment a numeric suffix. Configuration Click this button to select the COM port to which you have attached the KVM switch. This dialog attempts to open any COM switch from COM1: to COM16:. If successful, it will close the port and display it in the list for selection, if unsuccessful (if the port does not exist or is in use) it will not display it as an option. Please select the correct COM port. Note that changes to the selected COM port are only made once the OK button is clicked, if the Cancel button is clicked the COM port selected prior to clicking the Configuration button remains selected. Unit to File Click this button to copy data from the KVM switch to the specified file. If the specified file exists, you will be asked whether you wish to overwrite it. You will then be asked to set-up the KVM switch to send data. Please see the manual for instructions to do this. Once the KVM switch is set-up to send data, it will wait to receive the command to send from the Data Transfer Utility. This command is sent when you click the OK button and you should see a count of the number of bytes transferred rapidly changing in the status text box. If you see the error message, "Unable to send control value.", the RS232 communications were unsuccessful, you could try again, or check the cable is connected to the KVM switch and the switch is on and in the correct mode to send data. File to Unit Click this button to copy data from a file to the connected KVM switch. If the specified file is incorrectly formatted or empty (can happen if a 'unit-to-file' failed), you will be prevented from sending the data. You will be asked to confirm that sending this file is what you intended to do and then asked to put the KVM switch into the correct mode to receive data from the RS232 connection. Please see the KVM switch manual for instructions to do this. Once the KVM switch is set-up to receive data, is will wait to receive a command and data from the Data Transfer Utility. This command is sent when you click the OK button and you should see a count of the number of bytes sent rapidly changing in the status text box. If you see the error message, "Unable to send control value.", the RS232 communications were unsuccessful, please refer to the 'unit-to-file' section for possible remedies. Help produces this HTML file. Quit Exits the Utility and returns control to Windows.
