A Division of Digital Audio Corporation 4018 Patriot Drive Suite 300 Durham, NC 27703 Phone: +1 919 572 6767 Fax: +1 919 572 6786 www.salientsciences.com TSBCAR04 August 26, 2015 Verifying Successful Cardinal Firmware Boot The Cardinal Accelcore is capable of upgrading its firmware via the Cardinal Audiolab software. This process involves erasing the on-board flash memory that contains the firmware application code and re-writing the memory with the new code. If this process is interrupted by power failure or the software is terminated prematurely, this can result in a unit that is unable to boot or complete the upgrade process (a “bricked” unit). If the Cardinal Accelcore is not being recognized by the Cardinal Audiolab software (software shows “Disconnected” state) and/or the Cardinal is not showing up in the Windows Device Manager (it would appear as a Sound device as “Cardinal Accelcore”), then you may have a unit that is bricked. Before making this determination, please ensure that the Cardinal hardware is powered ON and that the Firewire cable is fully seated in both the Cardinal unit and the PC. If both of these are true and the Cardinal is not showing up in the Windows Device Manager, perform the following steps to ensure your Cardinal unit is successfully booting its firmware. Note: You should NOT remove any of the panels of a Cardinal Accelcore unit during this procedure. All LED indicators can be viewed without removal of any panels. Doing so is hazardous and may void your warranty. If you have difficulty viewing the LED indicators, please contact Salient Sciences technical support for assistance. There are different steps for the two different Cardinal models. See the pictures below to identify your unit. Cardinal Tech Agent (TA) Cardinal Forensic Examiner (FE) Cardinal FE steps 1) Power off the Cardinal and disconnect the Firewire cable from the unit. 2) Power on the Cardinal. 3) On the front panel, the green ACTIVITY light should be blinking. The red power LED should be ON. Sample rate displayed on the front panel is 44.1 and DSP utilization is 000. All other lights should be OFF. 4) Verify the following items: a. Looking inside the unit through the left side-panel grill, you should see a single blinking red light on the board about 2-3” from the rear of the unit. It should be blinking once per second. b. Looking inside the unit through the right side-panel grill, you should see two sets of four red blinking lights (also blinking once per second in unison) i. The first set of four are located near the rear of the unit directly behind the ADAT interface ii. The second set of four are located near the front of the unit directly behind the front panel ACTIVITY indicator c. Next to the second set of four lights you just found in the above step, you should see a 5th light that is ON and not blinking Cardinal TA steps 1) Power off the Cardinal and disconnect the Firewire cable from the unit. 2) Power on the Cardinal. 3) On the front panel, the green ACTIVITY light should be blinking. The blue power LED should be ON. All other lights should be OFF. 4) Look inside the unit, through the grill in the top panel to verify the following items: a. A single blinking red light near the center of the board. It should be blinking once per second. b. A group of four red lights in a square pattern near the front of the board, also blinking once per second. c. A single red light that is steady ON (not blinking) off to the right from the group of four red lights you found in the above step. If all the indicators are found to be true, then the Cardinal firmware is fully booted and operating properly. If any of the items are not found to be true, contact Salient Sciences technical support at 919-572-6767 or [email protected] for assistance.
