Introducing the Horizon Library Manager Introducing the Horizon Library Manager, an intelligent library-control product designed for StorageTek SCSI tape libraries. The Library Manager provides sharing and common robotics control for SCSI-attached, automated tape libraries. Its advantages include: Standardization through the ACS API. The Library Manager supports a subset of the widely accepted automated cartridge system application programming interface (ACS API) for control of library functions. Many popular backup applications use this interface, including legacy applications.
Library sharing and centralized management. The Library Manager provides a single, centralized source for control of automated tape libraries. Because the Library Manager is accessed through a browser-based GUI, you can control library functions from any remote workstation. Scalable support for tape libraries. The Library Manager enables consistent library control by providing a library control path that is separated from the application data path. Therefore, your organization can easily scale up to larger automated tape libraries without making changes to existing network applications.
Support for different types of backup applications. The Library Manager supports backups generated by any application using the ACS API, including backup applications provided by VERITAS, Legato, Computer Associates, and Hewlett Packard.1 These applications can be distributed throughout your network.
Reduced cost of ownership and investment. Through library sharing and centralized management, the Library Manager significantly reduces your overall investment in capital equipment. The Library Manager also eliminates the administrative burden associated with standalone storage systems, freeing system administrators for other tasks.
Browser-based GUI. Version 1.1 of the Library Manager provides a browser-based graphical user interface (GUI) to administer tape libraries. The GUI provides access to all library-management functions.
The Library Manager runs in an open-systems environment and currently supports both Windows NT and Solaris platforms.

The Library Manager GUI The Library Manager GUI is a browser-based interface that uses the standard internet protocols available through Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. The GUI provides you with “lights out” access to all the Library Manager functions, so that you can manage attached tape libraries remotely. Here are some of the things you can do: Media management. Enter, eject, mount, and dismount tapes in tape drives. Configuration. Add or delete libraries, backup applications, or device views. Assign aliases (customized device names) to tape drives, cartridge access ports (CAPs), or tape libraries. Configure a system event log or turn on trace information.
Administer devices and control access. Monitor the Library Manager server and its attached devices, including tape drives, CAPs, and tape libraries. Bring tape drives, CAPs, and the tape library online and offline. Control administrator access through password protection. Generate reports. Create reports showing status and state information for the tape drives, CAPs, and the tape library. Query media status specifying any range of tape cartridges, or track system activities through requests that the system has received. Customize the application view. Customize device names for specific kinds of backup applications (such as ACSLS format).

How Does the Library Manager Work? The Library Manager handles the control path between automated tape libraries and backup applications running on your network. Because of this architecture, the Library Manager provides common robotics control and sharing of SCSI tape libraries without changes to the backup applications themselves.
a proven application program interface that dozens of vendors have used over the years. The Library Manager uses a subset of this API and can be co-hosted on the same platform with any conforming application. The Library Manager currently runs under Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 4 and above, and Sun Solaris 2.6 and 2.7. The product is highly portable and eventually will be supported on most Java-enabled platforms.

About the Horizon Library Management System The Horizon Library Manager is a software product designed to work with any StorageTek SCSI tape library, including all Timberwolf (97xx) libraries and the L180 and L700 tape libraries. Other Horizon Library Management System products include: Horizon Framework Library Monitor provides library monitoring from within a systemmanagement framework, such as CA Unicenter TNG, HP OpenView Network Node Manager, and Tivoli Netview. This product gives “at a glance” status of StorageTek tape libraries across the network and improves library availability and job completion through centralized monitoring.

Horizon L Series Library Monitor provides direct monitoring for L Series libraries. This product is installed on a web server embedded in the library and can be accessed remotely through any web-browser on the network with proper access to the library URL. It provides detailed monitoring information including error conditions, statistics, and status of individual libraries, drives, and CAPs.
