Using iMovie
Spring 2010
A. Start iMovie 1. Click the iMovie icon in the Dock The iMovie window will open. 2. Under the File menu, choose New Project Give the project a name. When saving files, remember: • Use 24 characters or fewer. • Separate words with - or _ • Use ONLY letters, numbers, - or _ • Set Aspect Ratio to match your camera. • Choose a Theme. “None” is highly recommended. You can set a default transition between clips by clicking Automatically add, and choosing a type of transition. You don’t have to do this now. Transitions can be added later. The project is in your Movies folder and automatically saved as you work. 3. Click Create

B1. Import video from camcorder or webcam iMovie calls imported video clips Events. 1. Connect a camcorder or webcam 2. Click the Camera button on the left side of the iMovie window The Import window will open. 3. Click Import (or Capture if using a webcam) • The Save window will open. • Give the event a name. • The default Save location is a the iMovie Events folder. 4. Click Import or Capture The video will play in the Import window. 5. Click Stop at the end of the video, then Done The new video will appear in the Events window. The video is represented by thumbnail images of selected frames.
B2. Import existing video file 1. Under the File menu, choose Import > Movies 2. Browse to the file you want to import 3. Click Import
C. Edit video 1. Select a clip from the imported video in the Events window • Click near the beginning of the part of the video you want to use. • Drag to the end of the part you want to use. The selection is highlighted. • Click and drag the selection “handles” to adjust each end. 2. Move the clip to the Project window • Point to the selected video. The cursor will turn into a hand. • Click the selection and drag it to the Project window.

3. Trim the clip • Click the clip in the Project window to select it. • Click the Settings icon and choose Clip Trimmer. The Clip Trimmer window will appear in the Events window and display the clip. • To adjust the clip’s beginning or end, drag the selection “handles.” • To move the selected part of the video earlier or later use the left- or right-arrow key. • To adjust the beginning or end of the clip one frame at a time, use Option-left- or Option-right-arrow. • Click Done at the top right of the Clip Trimmer window to set the clip. 4. Repeat with additional clips as needed
D. Add titles 1. Open the Title browser • Click the Title Browser button to open the browser. 2. Add the title to the project a. Drag a title style from the browser to where you want a title to appear. b. Choose a background from the window that opens. c. In the Project window, click the information bar above the title. The Monitor becomes a space to work on the title. d. In the Monitor, click the default text and replace it with your own. e. Click Show Fonts to change the font settings. f. Click Done in the lower right of the Fonts window to set the font. g. Click Preview to see how the title will look. h. Click Done to keep the new title.

E. Add transitions 1. Open the Transition browser 2. Click the Transition Browser button to open the Transition browser. 3. Add the transition to the project • Drag a transition style from the browser to where you want to use it in the project. 4. Adjust the transition • Point to the transition in the Project window. • Click the Settings icon and choose Transition Adjustments. • Make the desired changes. • Click Done to save the changes.
F. View project The Playhead. The playhead is a red line that shows the frame in a clip being displayed in the Monitor. Moving the cursor over a clip moves the playhead. You can play the video 1. To play the entire project, click the Play button in the lower left of the Project window. 2. To play the project from the current spot, press the space bar.
G. Export video 1. Under the Share menu, choose Export Using QuickTime 2. For the web use these settings: • Export: Movie to QuickTime Movie or Movie to MPEG-4 • Use: Broadband – Low File size at these settings are approximately 1MB per minute. 3. Save the exported file in the desired location. • Don’t forget the Help menu!
