Professional Development Alternatives (PDA) An Online Professional Development Program Sponsored by Florida Department of Education FLORIDA DIAGNOSTIC AND LEARNING RESOURCES SYSTEMS (FDLRS) FDLRS is excited to present free online Professional Development Alternatives (PDA) modules sponsored by DOE. Each of these courses will satisfy the new requirement that all teachers have 20 hours of ESE inservice (Senate Bill 1108) to renew their certificate. All required meetings including the orientation will be held virtually—which means they may be accessed from any computer that has internet access. Virtual meetings will start at 4:30 pm and end around 6 pm. Registered participants will receive further information regarding the virtual meeting link. A headset with a microphone is preferred. PDA- DIFFERENTIATING READING: MAKING IT EXPLICIT (60 hrs) Facilitator: Beth Wilkin *Satisfies competency 4 of the Reading Endorsement. Required Virtual Orientation Meetings; Thursday, September 11, 2014 End Date: December 12, 2014 Identify practices for differentiating reading instruction to support & improve teaching for all students. Must have student contact! (2-3 additional virtual meetings with facilitator are REQUIRED.) PDA- INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES (60 hrs) Facilitator: Dr. Poinsetta Tillman Required Virtual Orientation Meeting; Tuesday, September 16, 2014 End Date: December 12, 2014 Identify specific strategies designed to help the struggling reader, enhance written performance, develop math skills, & enhance comprehension across the content areas. PDA- FOUNDATIONS (60 hrs) Facilitator: Lourdes Day Required Virtual Orientation Meeting; Wednesday, September 10, 2014 End Date: December 12, 2014 Recommended for those taking the ESE subject area exam Understand the different types of programs and services that make up exceptional student education (ESE) & identify appropriate practices based on legal and ethical standards. PDA- DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION IN MATH (30 hrs) Facilitator: Heather Kiefer Required Virtual Orientation Meeting; Tuesday, September 9, 2014 End Date: December 1, 2014 Participants will develop skills for differentiating mathematics instruction by using continuous assessment to plan and deliver effective whole group, small group, and individualized instruction to plan for each student’s needs. PDA –DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION IN SCIENCE (30 hrs) Facilitator: Laura Taft Required Virtual Orientation Meeting; Tuesday, September 9, 2014 End Date: December 1, 2014 Participants will develop skills for differentiating science instruction by using continuous assessment to plan and deliver effective whole group, small group, and individualized instruction to meet each student’s needs. PDA- TECHNOLOGY FOR STUDENT SUCCESS: INTRODUCTION (20 hrs) Facilitator: Shannyn Robertson Required Virtual Orientation Meeting; Wednesday September 10, 2014 End Date: December 1, 2014 Designed to assist you in identifying useful assistive technology, instructional technology, Universal Design for Learning, and accessible instructional materials. New TEACHING STUDENT WITH DISABILITIES (20 hrs) - Independent Study Course This course enables educators to develop, increase and demonstrate knowledge and skills for providing effective instruction for students with disabilities. Upon completion of all module requirements, including online content and a follow up activity, 20 in-service points will be awarded that satisfies the new ESE requirement. Self-Register at www.fl-pda.org. Scroll midway to the section on “Independent Study Module” to register. You have 12 weeks to complete the course. No partial credit is awarded if you do not complete the module. The FDLRS Center will receive a quarterly list form DOE of successful participants and they will post the in-service points.
