Getting Started The SXL-1000 Archive System consists of a XenData SX-10 Archive Appliance, an Oracle-StorageTek SL150 library and accessories. The SX-10 has been preconfigured for use with the SL150 library. Please first refer to this document for system installation and operation instructions.

1. SXL-1000 Models and Pre-Configuration There are six SXL-1000 models: Model

The image below shows the main components of an SXL-1000-90/1 or -90/2 system, with the XenData SX-10 Archive Appliance at the top and an SL150 library with two expansion units below.
The SX-10 connects to the SL150 library via one or two SAS cables (supplied). The system connects to an Ethernet network via 1 GigE. There are two 1 GigE network ports on the rear of the SX-10, as shown below. KVM or keyboard, mouse and VGA monitor connections are also available at the rear of the SX-10. The keyboard and mouse may be via USB or PS/2 connections.

The SXL-1000 systems are pre-configured as follows.
The Windows 7 operating system and XenData software are licensed and activated on the SX-10. In addition, the device drivers for the SL150 are loaded on the SX-10. The SL150 is configured with one reserve slot that is intended for a cleaning cartridge. The SL150 web interface has the following Administrator ID and password: ‘admin’ and ‘XDpassword1’. The web interface is accessed via the NET MGT port 1 of the SL150 which has an IP address 0f 192.168.20.5. One network port on the SX-10 is pre-configured for connection to the SL150 web interface with an IP address (IPv4) of 192.168.20.4. This the network port illustrated in section 2.3. Windows Explorer configuration on the SX-10 has a Favorites Bar link which launches the SL150 web interface.
The pre-configured network port on the SX-10 may be reconfigured for other purposes.
2. Setup and Connection Instructions 2.1 Check Packing List Remove all components and verify against packing list. 2.2 Install the SX-10 and LTO Library in a Rack Install the SX-10 in a 19 inch rack using the screws provided. Setup the StorageTek SL150 Base Module and Expansion Modules as described in the respective Setup Guides that are included in the shipping boxes. 2.3 Make Archive System Internal Connections Connect the SX-10 to the LTO library drive(s) using the SAS cable(s), as supplied. The SAS cable(s) may be connected to either of the 6 Gb/s SAS ports on the SX-10. Connect the supplied green network cable from the port of the SX-10 to NET MGT port 1 of the SL150 Library as illustrated below.

2.4 Make External Connections Make all I/O connections to the archive. First make network connections and connect a keyboard, mouse and monitor or KVM. Then connect power cables to the SX-10 and LTO library. 2.5 Power-on the System Follow the power-on procedure as described in section 3 below. 2.6 Insert a Cleaning Cartridge in Reserved Slot Unlock the left upper magazine using the front panel and open by pulling out by hand. Carefully attached a CLN barcode label to the cleaning cartridge and insert the cartridge into the upper and outermost slot as illustrated below. This is the pre-configured reserved slot. Close the magazine by pushing back in. Lock the magazine using the front panel.
2.7 Label Writable LTO Cartridges Carefully attach barcode labels to the LTO cartridges. (Do not use the CLN barcode labels, as these should only be used with cleaning cartridges.) 2.8 Import LTO Cartridges Import at least one writable LTO cartridge into the library as described in Section 5.1. 2.9 Configure the SX-10 Archive Policies The administrator defines policies that determine where files are physically stored on the digital archive. These policies support hierarchical storage management (HSM) and automatic LTO cartridge replication. The SX-10 supports three main levels of storage hierarchy: Online with one instance of a file on the 4TB disk cache and, in addition, there will typically be one or more instances on LTO tape. In this case the file will be retrieved from disk cache when accessed over the network. Near-line with at least one instance of a file on an LTO cartridge within the library and no instance on the disk cache. When a near-line file is accessed over the network, the XenData software automatically transfers the file from LTO to disk cache. As soon as the file transfer to disk cache commences, the file transfer over the network also starts. 6

Off-line with no instance on the disk cache and one or more instances of a file on LTO cartridges, all of which have been exported from the tape library. Please refer to the XenData6 Server Administrator Guide provided on the SX-10 CD for detailed instruction on how to configure these policies. The XenData6 Server Administrator Guide is also available from the XenData web site (www.xendata.com). 2.10 Configuring the XenData Alert Module Please refer to the Alert Module Administrator Guide for detailed instruction on how to configure these policies. The Alert Module Administrator Guide is supplied on the SX-10 CD with the system and is also available from the XenData web site (www.xendata.com). Note: if you would like assistance to configure the SX-10, please contact XenData support. Contact details are provided in section 7 below.
3. System Power-On Procedure 3.1 Power-on the tape library The library will start to initialize and will perform an inventory scan. This operation will take approximately 10 minutes. 3.2 Wait until the Library is Ready Wait until the tape library has completed its inventory process and the tape library indicates that the Library is Online.
3.3 Power on the SX-10 Power on the SX-10 archive appliance by pressing the power button on the front panel and wait for it to boot up. 3.4 Logon Logon to the SX-10 using the following: Windows User Name: Windows Password:

4. System Power-Off Procedure 4.1 Preparation Ensure that all archive and restore operations have completed.
Ensure that all archive and restore operations have completed.
Ensure that there are no LTO cartridges in any of the tape drives in the tape library as indicated by the control panel on the library. If necessary wait until the drives unload automatically. (The XenData software, by default, will unload tape cartridges after 10 minutes of inactivity.)
4.2 Power-Off SX-10 Power-off the SX-10 archive server using ‘Shut down’ from the Start menu. Wait until the SX-10 completes its power-off sequence. 4.3 Power-Off LTO Library Power-off the LTO library.
5. Importing and Exporting LTO Cartridges 5.1 Importing LTO Cartridges into the Library
Ensure that the barcode labels are correctly attached to the LTO cartridges.
Use the library front panel to open the mail slot and manually insert up to 4 cartridges at a time. Manually close the mail slot to import the cartridges.
The imported cartridges(s) will be automatically recognized by the XenData software.
5.2 Exporting LTO Cartridges from the Library
Use the XenData Management Console and select the cartridge to be exported in the left pane of the console. Right click on the cartridge and select ‘Export’.
Repeat the above if multiple cartridges are to be exported.
Open the mail slot using the library front panel and manually remove the cartridge(s).
6. LTO Drive Cleaning LTO drives require cleaning from time to time and this operation is performed manually when required by an SL150 tape drive. Ensure that a cleaning cartridge is present in the tape library reserved slot, then perform a drive clean by using the Oracle browser-based user interface. A method for inserting a cleaning cartridge into the reserve slot is described in Section 2.6.
