The Genius Difference Measuring True State-of-Health Batteries don’t die suddenly. Battery life slowly degrades over time based on a variety of factors. Ordinary ‘smart’ batteries give an incomplete and inaccurate depiction of state-of-health. Genius BatteriesTM are the only batteries that are capable of calculating True State-of-Health, providing you with deeper and more accurate insight into the health of your battery. True State-of-Health is a measurement that reflects the general condition of a battery using a variety of important parameters, not just age or cycle count. State-of-Health is the battery pack’s ability to deliver the specified performance compared with a fresh battery. It takes into account such factors as age, charging history, cell capacity, voltage, temperature exposure, storage, depth of discharge, and impedance (or internal resistance). Age of Battery and Time from 1st Use Capacity Voltage True SoH Charging History (EEPROM Count) Impedance (Internal Resistance) Temperature Exposure Depth of Discharge Storage The Parameters of True State-of-Health Age of Battery and Time from 1st Use Age of a battery refers to the life of a battery since first charge. As a battery ages, cells will experience permanent loss of capacity with frequent use or the passage of time due to unwanted irreversible chemical degradation. Charging History (EEPROM Count) EEPROM count is the recorded amount of total charges the battery has experienced since being placed into service. The value is stored in the battery EEPROM and updated as the battery pack is charged. Number of cycles is calculated by the recorded amount of coulombs into the battery divided by the battery’s rated capacity. Lithium batteries have a life expectancy of 300-500 cycles before they reach end of life. Impedance (Internal Resistance) Impedance is a measure of the chemical and mechanical resistance that is inherent inside the battery. This internal resistance limits the amount of current that can flow through the battery due to the decreased voltage (called voltage drop). Resistance comes from a breakdown in the chemical processes and mechanical components inside the cell. High levels of impedance limit the run time and performance of a battery. Temperature Exposure Temperature exposure is the temperature inside the pack that the cells experience as a result of external factors (freezer use or truck mounted devices in direct sunlight) along with charge and discharge cycles. High temperatures can degrade the performance of a battery over time by reducing the available capacity and shortening its life span. Storage Storage refers to the environment the battery is housed in. Storage times and resultant storage temperature can have a drastic effect on battery chemistry if the product is not properly charged to correct SOC (state of charge) levels. Improper storage of a battery pack can lead to several issues, including long term performance and capacity loss. Depth of Discharge Depth of discharge is the ratio of the quantity of energy removed or discharged from a battery as it is related to its full rated capacity quantity. It is usually stated as a percentage of the battery rated capacity and is commonly referred to as DOD. Continuous deep discharge of a battery pack impacts its overall health. Voltage Voltage is the change in electric potential (meaning potential energy per unit charge) between two positions. Voltage is always measured between two points, for example between the positive and negative ends of a battery, or between a wire and ground. Degradation or decay of voltage within the battery chemical system reduces usable capacity and runtime. Capacity Capacity is the amount of electric charge a battery can store. It is typically measured in Amp-hr. units and is determined by the mass of active material contained in the battery. The battery capacity represents the maximum amount of energy that can be extracted from the battery under certain specified conditions. Battery capacity degrades based on usage and environmental conditions. This degradation affects device operation to the point where the battery will no longer meet the needs of the user.
