Action Required: In order to participate in the Department’s new distance learning system, each workstation will need to have a headset with a microphone and a sound card. Your local technical support staff can assist you in the configuration of each computer and the installation of the hardware and software. The equipment recommendations are attached. Each workstation will need a headset with a microphone (if a set is not currently available). Additionally, local offices that are interested in presenting NetLink sessions to large groups will need to purchase a boundary microphone and computer speakers. Please follow the procedures outlined below for your type of office (SPD, Contract AAA or Transfer AAA). SPD and Contract AAA Local Office Instructions When ordering the headsets, boundary microphones or computer speakers, use the following cost code information. Equipment should be ordered through Boise Cascade following the instructions attached to this AR. · RDC 930 · Index number 31350 · PCA number 39250 It is important to use these numbers so that the funds will come from our training budget. Once you have received your headsets, you can determine which computers need a soundcard. If your local office has computers that do not have a sound cards, please contact the DHS Help Desk at 503.945.5623. Transfer AAA and Type A AAA Local Office Instructions Please complete and fax the attached form to Donna Weaver. This form will be used to order headsets, area microphones and computer speakers. Headsets can be ordered for each staff person and an area microphone and computer speakers can be pruchased for each office planning to participate in group sessions. Once you have received your headsets, you can determine which computers need a soundcard. Again, the attached form can be used to order soundcards. Reason for Action: NetLink is the Department’s new distance learning software replacing NetCast. Local offices will need to be equipped appropriately to participate in the new delivery system. NetLink delivers live interactive training sessions to a participant’s desktop computer, with both audio and visual components coming through the Internet. NetLink features enhanced instructor and participant interaction during class. A variety of tools help instructors to deliver content, link participants to web sites or materials they can download. Recommended Headset for NetLink The recommended headset is in the 2003 Boise Cascade Products Catalog on page 408. It is NOT listed in the 2004 catalog. The order number will continue to be valid through the NetLink implementation period.

This headset has two earmuffs – which can help reduce distractions from the work area. The 9 ft cord allows it to plug into the back of your computer and still be able to reach from the floor to your desk. The built-in microphone also has a built-in volume control and mute function.

NetLink PC Headset Connection Guide The PC Headset is used to hear the instructor and other participants and for them to hear you. The headset is connected to the back of your PC. Connecting the head set is in part a trial an error process. The sound card industry has not standarized the symbols or color coding. Finding the Sound card. Looking at the back of a PC you will be looking for a cluster of jacks for audio. On this PC (yours may be different) the audio jacks for the microphone and ear phones are located near the bottom of the computer on the back of a computer card. (On the black Dells, which this is not they are located with the motherboard connectors in this general area.) Typical sound card
Connecting the PC Headset The plugs on the headset are marked with symbols to indicate the microphone and headphones. Some sound cards are color coded to match the colored rings on the plugs. Simply match the colors and insert the plug.
Recommended Speakers for NetLink Use These are the recommended speakers for use in group NetLink sessions. The speaker’s are available through Boise. To order, e-mail

Payment may be made via a procurement card or SPOTS card. You must send the card # as well as the expiration date. DHS cost is $35.99. Please allow 1-2 weeks for delivery. When using NetLink in a group setting, audio quality becomes key to effective learning. These speakers offer a better high-end frequency response (where the human voice is found) than most PC Speakers we’ve tested.
