Single RAID Cross Adapter – A Primer Single RAID Cross Adapter – A Primer HighPoint Technologies, Inc. www.highpoint-tech.com Single RAID Cross Adapter - The HighPoint RocketRAID SATA II RAID Controller support a new performance enhancement feature called "Single RAID Cross Adapter". The new feature allows for the creation of arrays spanning across several controllers. RAID arrays may be created over a maximum of four controllers and can even be distributed flexibly over different drives. The advantage is obvious as more drives mean substantially more storage capacity. Also, a balanced distribution of drives over several PCI-X slots allows more bandwidth. Controller spanning allows an array to span disks attached to multiple RAID controllers and, in doing so, allows the creation of very large arrays and provides high throughput rates. For example, if we have four RAID controllers and each controller has eight drives attached, controller spanning allows the creation of an array that spans all thirty-two disk drives. Since performance scales linearly, this allows an extremely high I/O transfer performance with thirty-two spindles in a single array.
