It provides instruction on: • installing the modem • configuring the modem • installing the software • managing the software DOCUMENT CONVENTIONS Cautions indicate an important step in the process. Pay careful attention to them to eliminate the possibility of a faulty installation. FCC CLASS B COMPLIANCE This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. It includes a USB interface for your PC and connects your PC to your service provider over your ADSL line. In addition, it supports routing, bridging, and PPP Over ATM using G.Lite, G.DMT, and T1.413. Consult your service provider for the parameters to use when installing the USB software in Chapter 2. ADSL USB Use this guide to install and configure your Skyrocket 200F-M. If the equipment was damaged in transit, report it to the transportation company and to your sales representative. Check the contents of the package for one of each: • Skyrocket 200F-M modem • Grey phone cord • Black USB cable • USB Modem installation CD SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS • • • 2 Computer – Celeron, Pentium, Xeon, or compatible processor – at least 32 MB of RAM – 5 MB of available hard drive space – USB V1.0 or compliant bus Software – Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows ME installed – TCP/IP protocol installed – Internet Explorer 4.x (or later) or Netscape Navigator 4.x (or later) installed – Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows ME source files – Additional PPP Over Ethernet software may be supplied by your service provider RJ-11 wall jack with ADSL transmission Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide Chapter 1: Installing the Modem • Coupler - may be required when the modem and a voice device are sharing the same RJ-11 wall jack. If you need a coupler, contact your service provider. • DSL Configuration Information – Connection Type – VPI/VCI – Encapsulation Type – Modulation Type – Use of Auto-Modulation MICROFILTER LIMITS POTS microfilters (not included) prevent transient noise on your phone line. You can use up to five of them for voice devices (such as a telephones, fax machines, and dial-up modems) on a single line. When there are more than five voice devices on a line you need an external splitter. Contact your service provider for more information. Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide 3 Connecting the Cables CONNECTING THE CABLES After you have verified the shipping package contents, follow this procedure to physically set up your modem: 1 Turn off your computer. 2 Install the cables, POTS microfilter (optional), and coupler (optional) as shown below. Do not connect the modem USB cable to the PC or hub until instructed to do so in “Installing the Windows Software” on page 7. 3 To prevent transient noise on your phone line or interference with modem operation, install a microfilter between every phone jack on your DSL line and the analog device connected to it. 4 If the modem and the telephone are being connected to the same wall jack, a coupler is required. POTS Microfilter (5 maximum on a single line) TS PO SL AD Coupler (optional) AD R TE FIL RO MIC C Phone RJ-11 wall jack with ADSL transmission ADSL line port AD SL LIN E US B SkyRocket USB Modem USB port 4 Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE 2 After you have connected the modem cables, follow these procedures to install the USB and Windows software: Section Page Installing the USB Software 6 Installing the Windows Software 7 Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide 5 Installing the USB Software INSTALLING THE USB SOFTWARE To install the USB software from the supplied CD, follow these steps: 1 Turn your computer on and let Windows start. 2 Insert the USB Modem Installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. 3 Double-click My Computer on the Windows desktop to locate the CD-ROM drive. 4 Double-click the CD icon, then double-click Setup to start the installation process. 5 Click Next in the Welcome dialog to start loading the drivers. 6 Click on the connection type specified by your service provider in the Select ISP dialog. Then click Next. 7 Click Finish in the Setup Complete dialog to finish installing the USB software and start installing the Windows software. The DSL Installer dialog displays. Proceed to the next section “Installing the Windows Software.” 6 Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide Chapter 2: Installing the Software INSTALLING THE WINDOWS SOFTWARE To install the Windows software, follow these steps: 1 Insert the rectangular end of the USB cable into the USB port on your computer (or USB hub). A green power (PWR) LED illuminates on the modem, indicating that power is on. The ADSL and USB LEDs also illuminate. Power LED USB hub or PC USB port ADSL USB skyrocket Status LEDs Windows automatically detects the modem and completes the installation. 2 Do one of the following: • If prompted by the Copying Files dialog, insert the Windows CD into the CD-ROM drive and type in the correct path for the CD (Example: d:). • If you do not have the Windows CD, type the path for the directory containing the Windows files. The default directory is c:\windows\options\cabs. 3 Click OK in the Copying Files dialog to copy the Windows files. 4 Click Yes in the System Settings Change dialog to restart your computer with the new software. Additional PPP Over Ethernet software may be supplied by your service provider allowing you to connect to a service. Follow these procedures in the sections listed below: Section Page Changing the VPI and VCI 10 Changing the Encapsulation 11 Changing the Modulation 12 Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide 9 Changing the VPI and VCI CHANGING THE VPI AND VCI The default values are as follows: • VPI (Virtual Path ID): 0 • VCI (Virtual Circuit ID): 35 If your service provider requires different values, perform the following steps: 1 Click Start, Programs, Skyrocket USB ADSL Modem, Configure to open the DSL Modem Installer dialog. 2 Click Settings in the DSL Modem Installer dialog to access the modem settings. 3 In the VPI box, enter the new VPI value from your service provider. This value can be from 0 to 4096. 4 In the VCI box, enter the new VCI value from your service provider. This value can be from 32 to 65535. 5 Click Apply to accept the changes. 6 Select Yes, I want to restart my computer now to restart your computer to restart your computer with the new settings. 10 Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide Chapter 3: Configuring the Modem CHANGING THE ENCAPSULATION There are multiple encapsulation types available for the 200F-M. The default type will vary depending on which connection type you specified when you installed the USB software. Verify the correct encapsulation type with your service provider and change if necessary. Select one of the encapsulations by following the steps below: 1 Click Start, Programs, Skyrocket USB ADSL Modem, Configure to open the DSL Modem Installer dialog. 2 Click Settings in the DSL Modem Installer dialog to access the modem settings. 3 In the Encapsulation box, choose the encapsulation type specified by your service provider. 4 Click Apply to accept the change. 5 Select Yes, I want to restart my computer now to restart your computer with the new setting. Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide 11 Changing the Modulation CHANGING THE MODULATION There are multiple modulation types available for the 200F-M. The default type will vary depending on which connection type you specified when you installed the USB software. Verify the correct modulation type with your service provider and change if necessary. 1 Click Start, Programs, Skyrocket USB ADSL Modem, Configure to open the DSL Modem Installer dialog. 2 Click Settings in the DSL Modem Installer dialog to access the modem settings. 3 In the Modulation box, choose the modulation type specified by your service provider. 4 In the Auto-Modulation box, do one of the following according to your service provider: • Disable Auto-Modulation by clearing the box. • Enable Auto-Modulation by placing a checkmark in it. 5 Click Apply to accept the change. 6 Select Yes, I want to restart my computer now to restart your computer with the new setting. Refer to Appendix A on page 17 for more detail on the Auto-Modulation parameter. 12 Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide MANAGING THE MODEM SOFTWARE 4 After you have installed the modem software you may need to update the software with a newer version of code or remove it. Follow one of these procedures to either update the modem software or remove it: Section Page Updating the Modem Software 14 Removing the Modem Software 15 Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide 13 Updating the Modem Software UPDATING THE MODEM SOFTWARE To update the USB modem software to a newer version of code, perform the following steps: 1 Click Start, Programs, Skyrocket USB ADSL Modem, Configure to open the DSL Modem Installer dialog. 2 Click Update in the DSL Modem Installer dialog to access the update options. 3 Click Yes in the Install dialog to confirm that you want to update the modem software. 4 Locate and select the folder containing the modem software at the Select Installation Location dialog, then click OK to accept the folder location. 5 Click OK in the Information dialog to accept the caution. Do not unplug the modem USB cable from the PC or hub until the removal has been completed. 14 6 Click Finish in the Setup Complete dialog to complete the updating process. 7 Click Finish in the Setup Complete dialog to finish the installation. Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide Chapter 4: Managing the Modem Software REMOVING THE MODEM SOFTWARE To remove the USB modem software from your computer, perform the following steps: 1 Click Start, Programs, Skyrocket USB ADSL Modem, Uninstall to open the DSL Modem Installer dialog. 2 Click Remove in the DSL Modem Installer dialog to remove all installed USB modem software including folders and icons. 3 Click Yes in the Install dialog to confirm you want to remove the modem software. 4 Click OK in the Information dialog to accept the caution. Do not unplug the modem USB cable from the PC or hub until the removal has been completed. 5 Click Finish in the Setup Complete dialog to restart the computer. Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide 15 Removing the Modem Software 16 Skyrocket USB 200F-M Installation Guide AUTO-MODULATION A The Auto-Modulation option dynamically negotiates the modulation type between the Skyrocket 200F-M (CPE) and the DSLAM at the Central Office (CO). View the following tables to understand how these two devices will synchronize with Auto-Modulation enabled (Table 1) and disabled (Table 2). Table 1.
