SECTION I INTRODUCTION
1.1
GENERAL
The M6 Portable Test Unit (PTU) Test Set, hereinafter called PTU, is shown in figure 1-1. The PTU is used with a cab signal loop tester and provides the necessary equipment for testing, measuring, routine calibration for periodic inspections and troubleshooting of the M6 Cab Signal/ATC System. The PTU interfaces to the M6 rack via the PTU cable that is connected to the M6 rack PTU connector. This cable, when connected, supplies power to the PTU from the cab signal system, and interfaces the PTU's indications and controls to/from the M6 cab signal/ATC system. Short circuit protection is provided for the PTU by the cab signal power supplies internal short circuit protection. 1.2
DESCRIPTION
All components of the PTU are housed in a fiberglass case with hinged cover, providing easy access to the controls and indicators. The controls and indicators are all located on the surface of the PTU panel. Mounted to the top and underside of the PTU panel are all the components comprising the PTU. Major components include the Display PCB and Test PCB, digital multimeter and timer and oscillator (frequency counter) meters. A storage compartment is built into the case fore storing the PTU cable and miscellaneous test cord and jumpers. The sonalert interfaces to the alarm circuit in the M6 Cab Signal/ ATC rack to provide an audible indication. The variable oscillator in the PTU is for testing the no-motion, speedometer and overspeed functions of the ATC system. The oscillator's output frequency is applied to the ATC system's speed sensor. The PTU also contains a multimeter, frequency counter, and timer. The multimeter provides the means to measure various voltages, currents and resistances while inspecting and troubleshooting the ATC system. The PTU frequency counter is internally connected to the oscillator output and measures the oscillator output to the nearest hertz. The timer indicates the various time delays generated within the ATC system. The PTU contains a manual code selection (NO CODE, 75, 120, and 180 codes) injection type cab signal test circuit. The cab signal test circuit verifies the operation of the 100 Hz filter, amplifier, decoding and acknowledging systems operation. The cab signal test circuit does not test the amplifier sensitivity. A cab signal loop tester is needed to test the amplifier sensitivity. 1-1

MG TESTING USING THE PTU
2.3.1
PRELIMINARY TESTS
2.3.1.1
Amplifier Sensitivity Tests and Adjustments
Use the M6 CODE TEST SET and test loop. Do not use the PTU. To test and adjust the amplifier sensitivity, perform the following procedure. a.
Position a cab signal test loop on the rails under the A-Car track receivers.
b.
Key in the A-Car Master Controller and place the REVERSER in Forward
c.
Connect the cab signal tes :._ loop to the LOOP OUTPUT plug on the M6 CODE TES'I' SET.
d.
Connect the M6 CODE TEST SET's power to 110 Vac power.
e.
Set the CODE TEST SET's switches on the following position. {NOTE: Input power switch is a circuit breaker) •INPUT POWER - ON (Note: if switch trips, test set is defective.) •CODE SELECT - STEADY •LOOP OUTPUT LEVEL - HIGH •CARRIER LEVEL 100 HZ ADJUST - ADJUST UNTIL UNIT'S METER READS 1 ± 0.1 AMPS
f.
Set the M6 CODE TEST SET'S CODE SELECT switch to 180. The GREEN ASPECT on the A-Car ADU should not light. If it is lit, the M6 system's amplifier sensitivity is too high, so proceed to Step h.
g.
Gradually turn the CARRIER LEVEL 100 Hz ADJST clockwise until the GREEN aspect on the A-Card ADU lights.
h.
To measure the pick-up current level, set the M6 CODE TEST SET' s CODE SELECT switch to STEADY and read the CODE TEST SET' s meter for the pick-up current level. The meter reading should be between 1.3 and 1.6 amps. If the pickup level is within tolerance, proceed to Step i. If the pick-up is not within tolerance, adjust the carrier level lOOHz ADJUST knob until the meter reads 1.45 ±0.1 amps. Then set the CODE SELECT switch to the 180 position. Adjust the M6 ATC System's -1601 PCB amplifier sensitivity per the following: 1.
Locate the -1601 AMPLIFIER card in the M6 Cab Signal System. If the LED on the -1601 card is flashing, adjust the lower cardedge adjustable resistor (R14) on the -1601 card clockwise until 2-3
SM6477
UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL
the LED turns off. 2.
If the LED on the -1207 card is on, adjust the top adjustable resistor (Rll) on the -1601 card counterclockwise until the LED on the -1207 card turns off.
3.
To set the amplifier sensitivity, slowly turn the top adjustable resistor (Rll) on the -1601 card clockwise until the LED on the -1207 card lights.
4.
To set the "turn on level" of the LED on the -1601 card, adjust the lower cardedge adjustable resistor (R14) on the -1601 cardedge counterclockwise until the LED just begins to flash. The cab signal amplifier sensitivity is now set.
i.
Using the M6 CODE TEST SET, verify that the minimum cab signal pickup from both the A and B car cabs is within the 1.3 to 1.6 rail amp window at all three code rates; 75, 120, and 180.
j.

SECTION Ill FUNCTIONAL OPERATION 3.1
GENERAL
The major functional areas of the PTU are the display printed circuit (P.C.) board, a tester P.C. board and its associated front panel mounted controls, and the front panel mounted cab controls. Each of these functional areas are described in the following paragraphs. Refer to Figure 3-2, PTU schematic, Figure 3-3, Tester P.C. Board schematic, and Figure 3-4, Display P.C. Board schematic, as required, while reading the following descriptions. An overall functional diagram of the PTU is shown in Figure 3-1. 'J'he 32 vdc power required by the PTU is supplied by the M6 rack that the PTU is connected to during operation. Pin A of the plus connector is the positive(+) 32 vdc and pin Bis the negative(-) 32 vdc. The 32 vdc is distributed to the various circuits within the PTU by the PTU ON/OFF switch. 3.2
DISPLAY P.C. BOARD
The display P.C. board contains the 13 LED indicators that are visible through the faceplate. Each indicator contains two parallel LED circuits for reliability and for continued operating in a partial failure of the indicator. These indicators are connected to the P.C. board plus connector and monitor the various functions of the M6 cab signal/ATC system and PTU. All indicators are referenced to the common of the system. P.C. board plug connector pin 22 is connected to the PUSH TO TEST switch on the PTU. When the PUSH TO TEST SWITCH is pressed, 32 vdc is applied to pin 22 and causes the 13 indicators to light. 3.3
TESTER P.C. BOARD
The Tester P.C. board contains four electronic circuit functions which are: a.
Code Tester - direct injection type, manual code selection, 100 Hz carrier at 180, 120, 75 and NO CODE. Used in the PTU to verify the operation of the M6 cab signal system.
b.
9 Vdc Isolated Power Supply - used to power the PTU multimeter.
c.
Oscillator - used to test the M6 overspeed system.
d.
Timer Triggers - used to debounce the relay interlock inputs into the PTU timer.
Each of the four electronic circuit functions are described in the following paragraphs.
3-1
SM6477
UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL
3.3.1 Code Tester Circuit The code tester circuit consists of a 100 Hz carrier code rate generator on the tester P.C. board and on the PTU front panel the rotary five position double pole CODE TESTER selector switch and the CODE TESTER ON/OFF toggle switch. The code tester circuit operates when the PTU ON/OFF switch and CODE TESTER selector switch are both in the ON position. The CODE TESTER selector switch is a three pole switch that controls the following: POLE 1- ON position enables coded output to the receiver bars in the M6 system. POLE 2- ON position enables power to the code tester. OFF position enables the start trigger in decoder dropaway timing measurements. POLE 3-0N position enables 32 volt power into the M6 system track receivers for code generation. The code tester circuit generates the following codes: CODE TESTER Selector Switch Position

Input power from the CODE TESTER ON/OFF switch to the tester P.C. board connector J2 pin 14 provides the input 32 vdc to IC US and it's associated components. IC US is a 32 to 15 vdc regulator that provides operating power for the code tester circuit. IC US and it's associated components comprise the code rate generator of the code tester circuit. The RC time constant between pins 1 and 2 of US determine the code rate. This RC time constant is determined by the position of the CODE TESTER selector switch. IC U6 and it's associated components comprise the 100 Hz carrier oscillator. The output code rate of IC US at pin 8, gates the 100 Hz output of IC U6 at the selected code rate. The output of IC US also drives the LED drivers Ql and QS. The 100 Hz output of IC U6 at pin 8 controls current source transistor Q2. Q2 drives the track receivers during cab signal testing. When the CODE TESTER selector switch is placed in the STEADY position, 15 vdc is connected to J2 pin 5. This inhibits the code

rate generator IC US and allows the 100 Hz oscillator IC U6 to operate continuous. When the CODE TESTER selector switch is placed in N.C. position, 15 vdc is connected to connector J2 pin 5 and inhibits the code rate generator IC US and 100 Hz oscillator IC U6 operation. 3.3.2 9 VDC Isolated Power Supply IC Ul is a 18 to 32 vdc input to 24 vdc isolated output power supply. IC Ul is powered when the PTU is connected to an operational M6 system and the PTU ON/OFF switch is set to ON. The isolated 24 vdc output of IC Ul, pins 3(+) and pin 4(1), is connected to IC U4. IC U4 is a regulator configured with it's associated components to provide a 9.25 ± 0.25 vdc output across connector Jl pins 19 and 18. This 9.25 vdc output is used to power the PTU multimeter. 3.3.3 No Motion Overspeed Oscillator The no motion overspeed oscillator consists of a variable oscillator, and on the PTU's front panel a potentiometer for variable frequency control and a three pole, 4-position, rotary switch for frequency range selection. The no motion overspeed oscillator operates when the PTU ON/OFF switch is ON and the NO MOTION/OVERSPEED OSCILLATOR RANGE switch is not in the OFF position. This oscillator is powered by the 32 vdc connected to connector J2 pin 1 and the common buss of the tester P.C. board. IC U9 is a function generator that provides a sine wave output at it's output, pin 2. The rate that IC U9 oscillates at is determined by the capacitor value connected to IC U9 pin 9 and the resistance value connected across the tester P.C. board connector J2 pins 19 and 3. This resistance value is determined by the front panel mounted FREQUENCY control. The oscillator has four ranges manually selected by the front panel mounted RANGE switch. These ranges are OFF, 10 to 60 Hz; 60 TO 500 Hz; and 300 to 2.lK Hz. The sine wave output of IC U9 is connected to a IC UlO, which provides the gain for driving a load consisting of a 3040A speed sensor connected to shaper limiter P.C.B. N451570-5002. The square wave output of IC U9 is connected to the tester P.C. board connector J2 pin 7 and is the input to the NO MOTION/OVERSPEED OSCILLATOR Hz indicator (frequency counter) at pin 8. 3.3.4 Timer and Timer Triggers Circuit The timer circuit is powered when the PTU is connected to an operational M6 system and the PTU ON/OFF switch is set to ON. The timer circuit consists of a INTERNATIONAL MICROTRONICS MODEL 270 timer, a start/stop trigger circuit, and the front panel mounted FUNCTION SELECTOR switch and TIMER RESET pushbutton switch. The timer circuit FUNCTION SELECTOR double pole, rotary switch is connected to the various trigger inputs in the PTU and M6 system. When a position is selected the appropriate start/stop inputs are 3-5
SM6477
UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL
connected to the timer trigger inputs on the tester P.C. board. The TIMER RESET momentary pushbutton switch is a double pole switch. This switch has two functions. When the switch is pressed, one function is to reset the timer triggers by applying 15 vdc to the Timer Reset input at connector Jl pin 25 on the tester P.C. board. The other function is to reset the TIMER display to zero by connecting pin 15 of the 270 timer to common when the switch is pressed. IC Ull is a 15 vdc regulator used to power IC U2. IC U2 contains four NOR gates that are configured to create two separate relay interlock debounce circuits. These debounce circuits generate the start and stop triggers for the PTU TIMER. When the TIMER RESET push-button switch is pressed the timer start input (ANODE D8) is reset to high (15 vdc) and the stop trigger output (ANODE D9) is set low (common). Setting either trigger HIGH, turns on optical isolator J3 and pulls the timer start/stop input at connector J2 pin 8 to common. This prevents the PTU TIMER from counting. When a 32 vdc start input is applied to connector Jl pin 26, the start trigger toggles to low, J3 turns off and the PTU TIMER begins to count. When a 32 vdc stop input is applied to connector Jl pin 25, the stop input toggles high, J3 turns on, and the input into the TIMER pin 10 toggles to low which prevents the TIMER from counting. 3.4
CAB CONTROLS
Mounted on the PTU front panel are several controls that duplicate the interface from the car to the M6 system to the PTU. This feature eliminates the need, when testing, to operate the controls in the A-car or B-car cabs. These controls operate when the PTU ON/OFF switch is set to ON. These controls are: a.
MASTER CONTROLLER switch - A three position, rotary switch that interfaces to the BRAKE and MAX BRAKE inputs in the M6 system. The A-car and B-car MASTER CONTROLLERS must be keyed out for proper testing using this switch. When testing using the A-CAR or B-CAR MASTER CONTROLLERS with the PTU connected, this switch must be in the POWER position for proper operation. This switch when in the MAX. BRAKE position energizes the MBK relay in the M6 system. When the switch is in the BRAKE position, this switch energizes the controller input to the M6 system's 2703 card. When this switch is in the POWER position it is open circuit to the M6 system.
b.
BA Toggle Switch - This switch interfaces to the BA relay in the M6 system, and energizes the BA relay when the switch is in the ON position.
c.
ACK Pushbutton Switch - This switch interfaces the acknowledging switch input of the M6 system and allows acknowledgement of more restrictive aspect changes from the PTU.
3-6
SM6477
UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL
d.
MODE Toggle Switch - This switch duplicates the operation of the MODE switches in the A & B car cabs. This switch allows testing of NON SIGNAL territory operation from the PTU by energizing the M6 system MODE relay when the switch is placed in the ON position.
e.
LEAD Toggle Switch - This switch is a three position, toggle switch (A-CAR, center off, and B-CAR). This switch controls the appropriate ACL (A-CAR LEAD) or BCL (B-CAR LEAD) relay in the M6 system. This enables A-CAR or B-CAR interface testing from the PTU.

SECTION IV PTU TESTING AND CALIBRATION
4.1
GENERAL
This section contains the procedures to test and calibrate the PTU. 4.2
PTU TESTING AND CALIBRATION
The PTU should be tested foi proper operation and calibrated at least once a year. The digital multimeter should be calibrated per the manufacturer's (Fluke) Instruction Manual. The timer and frequency counter are crystal oscillator controlled devices and are manufactured by: International Microtronics Corporation Ottotek Div. 4016E Tennessee St. Tucson, AZ 85715 602-790-2808 The timer and frequency counter have no calibration adjustments. These units either pass or fail the tests. In the event of an after warranty failure of the timer or frequency counter, contact the manufacturer listed above. To verify that the frequency counter is operating properly, perform the frequency counter and overspeed oscillator tests. To verify that the timer is operating properly, perform the timer test. After performing the frequency counter and overspeed oscillator tests and the timer test, perform the code tester tests, and display tests. Successful completion of all these tests insures that the PTU is operating properly. 4.2.1 Frequency Counter and Overspeed Oscillator Tests Perform the frequency counter and overspeed oscillator tests as follows: a.
Connect PTU interface connector pin A to (+) and pin B to (-) of a 30-32 Vdc supply. Connect a separate frequency counter (NOTE: the PTU's Fluke Meter frequency counter may be used.) and oscilloscope to PTU connector pins 1 and B. NOTE The frequency counter of the multimeter may be used as the separate frequency counter required in the step below. 4-1

e.
Close SWl and observe that TIMER begins counting. When the PTU TIMER reads in excess of 5 seconds close SW2. Observe that the TIMER stops counting.
f.
Observe that the oscilloscope displays a 5 ±0,5 volt trace that was on when SWl was high and SW2 was off. Measure the time that the oscilloscope trace was high. This time MUST be within ±0.1 seconds of the time displayed on the TIMER.
4.2.3 Code Tester Tests Perform the code tester tests as follows: a.
Set the PTU ON\OFF switch to OFF.
b.
Set the PTU's ON/OFF switch to OFF. Connect PTU interface connector pin A to(+) and pin B to(-) of a 30-32 Vdc supply.
c.
Set the PTU ON/OFF switch to ON. Set the CODE TESTER ON/OFF switch to ON. On the 9501 board connect a DC voltmeter across capacitor C9. Observe that DC voltmeter indicates 15 ±0.5 vdc. Connect an external 5.lK ohm load to PTU connector pins Kand J.
d.
Set the CODE TESTER selector switch to the STEADY position. Set the multimeter to Hz. Connect the multimeter across the external 5.lK ohm load resistor (pin K is positive). A frequency of 100 ±2 Hz should be measured. If the frequency is not within tolerance, locate R47 on the 9501 board in the PTU. Remove resistor R47 and install a decade resistor in it's place. Increase the decade resistor value until the counter reads 100 ±0.5 Hz. Solder in R47 position a standard value resistor that is closest to the final decade resistor value.
e.
Set the multimeter to read AC RMS volts and measure the voltage across the external 5.lK ohm load resistor. Observer that multimeter reading is between 420 mV-460mV ac. If the voltage is out of tolerance, adjust R38 (R38 is the blue variable resistor on the 9501 board) for a multimeter reading between 420 mV-460 mV ac.
f.
Set the CODE SELECTOR selector switch to the 75 position. Observe that the CAB TEST indicator flashes at the code rate. Connect an oscilloscope high lead to the 9501 board diode Dll cathode and low lead (common) to PTU input pin B (Dll is located to the left of the blue variable resistor). Observe that oscilloscope displays a square wave with a period between 0.810 to 0.857 seconds (70 to 74 code). If the waveform is out of tolerance, install a decade resistor in place of resistors R3 an R4 on the 9501 board. Adjust the decade resistor value to set the period of the displayed waveform to 0.833 ±0.005 seconds. Solder in R3 and R4 positions two resistors whose 4-3

4.2.5 Leakage Test Procedure This test will check for isolation between the PTU control panel and the 36-pin connector plug. On the Portable Test Unit, disconnect the power plug on the side of the multimeter; this allows the meter to operate from the internal battery. Turn the meter on and set to read MQ scale. Connect the supplied 36-pin cable harness to the PTU. With the multimeter, measure the resistance from each pin of the 36-pin connector to the PTU chassis and all exposed switches. The meter should indicate "OL" for all tests. While connecting the meter, the display may jump to some reading less than "OL"; this is normal, as long as the "OL" reading returns after making the connection. While conducting this test, do not touch the ends of the probes with your fingers as this can cause a false reading. This test should be performed annually.
