SMALL BACKPACK PG 2/6 SMALL BACKPACK Finished size: approx 30cm(h) x 35cm(w) x 15cm(d) LINING FABRIC MATERIALS: • fabrics from Chambray Fabric Range FLAP 70 cm of the main fabric 30cm of the lining fabric 9 x 77cm • 20cm of batting or wadding • magnetic clip BASE • 4 bag feet studs This casual backpack is compact in size. Interfacing and batting are added to the base and lower part of backpack to add some structure. All measurements are in centimeters with 1cm seam allowances included. CUTTING Print out base and flap templates on page 6. HEAVY INTERFACING BASE STRAPS 4 x 60cm x 2 HANDLE 2.5 x 20cm BATTING FLAP 7 x 75cm Cut out the pieces of fabric as per diagram. Layer the pieces, starting with lining piece(face down), heavy interfacing, outer bag (face up). Pin or baste them together. Quilt all layers together and attach bag feet studs. With wrong side facing pin drawstring casing to the top edge of the main panel with openings on each side. Sew them together, fold drawstring panel to the front. Tack under seam allowance and topstitch around the folded edge. interfacing BASE main fabric lining seam in the center opening opening feet studs FRONT right side CORDS MAIN PANEL With wrong sides together fold main panel in half and stitch close to the edge (2-3mm). Refold at the seam line, but this time put the fabrics right sides together. Press. Stitch together using a 6mm seam allowance. This will allow you to enclose the first seam. Fold and press 4 x 77cm pieces in half lengthwise. Then fold and press the long edges to the center to make 1cm wide cords for the backpack. Then fold in half and press again. Topstitch close to the edge. Use large safety pin to pull one cord through a casing. Stitch ends together. Trim edges. Repeat with other cord. MAIN PANEL PADDING With right sides together fold in half and stitch ends together. right side wrong side Press a 1cm hem to the wrong side along one long edge of lining piece. DRAWSTRING CASING With right sides together stitch along the edges leaving approx. 1.5cm opening on each side. Back stitch to secure stitching. DRAWSTRING CASING 5 x 39.5cm 1.5cm opening Align main panel, batting and raw edge of lining to the bottom edge of backpack. Pin or baste them together. Sew along the folded edge and continue quilting all layers together. 1cm seam allowance Press seam allowance flat and sew along the edge. wrong side lining batting © Leutenegger Pty. PG 4/6 SMALL BACKPACK SHOULDER STRAPS With right sides together fold each strap lengthwise and stitch along the edge. 1cm shoulder strap 10 x 60cm (reverse side) Press seams open and turn the shoulder strap inside out. With help of large safety pin insert heavy interfacing inside each shoulder strap. Topstitch close to both heavy interfacing long edges. 5mm ASSEMBLY Align center of the flap with center seam. Pin flap approx. 6cm from the top edge. Pin shoulder straps and handle in place. Fold 9 x 20cm strip in half. Fold in seam allowances on the side and press. Align long edge with the he flap and stitch across all layers. Back stitch at the beginning and the end. Fold strap over and stitch along the edges. HANDLE FLAP 6cm seam Take 7x20cm piece for the handles. With right sides together fold it lengthwise and stitch along the edge. Press seams open and turn the shoulder strap inside out. With help of large safety pin insert heavy interfacing inside the handle. Topstitch close to both long edges. right side Pin flap pieces right sides together. Place batting on top. Stitch the flaps together, curving the stitching at the lower edge. Trim excess batting. Clip corners, turn out and press flat. Insert magnetic clip to the center of the lining. © Leutenegger Pty. PG 5/6 SMALL BACKPACK BASE ASSEMBLY With right sides together match center seam of the main panel with center of the base panel. Pin or baste them together inserting the ends of shoulder straps in place. Pin 3cm wide bias strip to the side panel. Stitch all layers together along the edge. It is best to sew around the pieces with main panel facing up so you can move around the piece easier. There are lots of layers, be sure to use size 16 needle. seam Trim excess seam allowance and clip corners, if required.
