Introduction The SmartRack 16 from Minicom is a slim, rack mountable, console drawer with an integrated 16 port KVM switch. Occupying just 1U of rack space, it’s the neat, spacesaving way to control your data rack. It comes with all the hardware you need to mount it, and is easy to install. You can access and control up to 16 multiple multi-platform computers from one Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM) console with the SmartRack 16 system. To access your servers, just slide out the SmartRack 16 drawer and flip up its top to use the large, high resolution, clear 17” TFT LCD display (VGA/SVGA/XGA/SXGA compatible) with front-panel display controls for easy adjustment, and high-quality Touchpad. When not in use, the keyboard is concealed by the front door. 2. System components The SmartRack 16 system consists of: · SmartRack 16 console drawer · Remote Interface Connection cables (RICCs) – PS/2, SUN, USB · CAT5 cables (provided with the RICCs) · RS232 Download cable · Rack mounts for the RICCs 3. Connecting to a rack The figure below illustrates the mounting components supplied with the SmartRack 16. The SmartRack 16 mounting components 1 QUICK INSTALLATION GUIDE 4. Connecting to a rack without the extension bracket When you do not need to extend the SmartRack 16 from the rack, use components 1-4 above. Note! The illustrations below show the connections to right hand side of the SmartRack 16. The connections are the same for the left hand side. Connect the components to the rear of the SmartRack 16. Connecting to a rack with the extension bracket When you need to extend the SmartRack 16, use the following supplied components: 1-3 and 5-6. Step 1 Screw (5) onto the rear of the SmartRack 16 as illustrated below. Screw (5) onto both sides of the SmartRack 16 rear Step 1 4 SMARTRACK 16 Step 2 Place the extension bracket (6) on the side of the SmartRack 16. See below. The SmartRack 16 system configuration Figure 1 illustrates the basic configuration of the SmartRack 16 system. The SmartRack 16 ports The figure below illustrates the ports on the rear of the SmartRack 16 switch. Pre-installation guidelines · Switch off all computers · Place cables away from fluorescent lights, air conditioners, and machines that are likely to generate electrical noise · Ensure that the maximum distance between each computer and the SmartRack 16, does not exceed 10m/33ft 9. Connecting the SmartRack 16 system Connect each computer to the SmartRack 16 using the appropriate RICC and CAT5 cables. Figure 1 above illustrates the SmartRack 16 connections with the appropriate RICC connected to a PS/2, SUN and USB computer/server. 10. Connecting a RICC to each computer Connect the 3 types of RICCs as explained below. Connecting a PS/2 RICC Figure 3 illustrates the RICC. Rack mounting the RICCs You can attach the RICCs to a server rack or computer using the Velcro strips provided. Or connect it using the bracket provided. The figure below illustrates the bracket. Connecting the CAT5 cables 1. Connect one connector to the RICC’s RJ45 port. 2. Connect the other connector to one of the SmartRack 16 Computer ports. 3. Follow the above 2 steps for each computer. Important! When the console drawer is connected to a rack with the extension bracket, the drawer can be pushed in/out by about 13cm. Therefore ensure the CAT5 cables have enough slack to allow the console drawer to move in and out. Connecting the power supply 1. Connect the SmartRack 16 to the power supply using the Power cord provided. Only use the Power cord supplied with the unit. 2. Switch on SmartRack 16 and the computers. The SmartRack 16 On/Off button is on the front panel. 14. Resetting the switch To reset the SmartRack 16, power it off. The RICCs are unaffected by this reset. 11 QUICK INSTALLATION GUIDE 15. Operating the SmartRack 16 system Below is a brief outline of how to switch between computers. See the softcopy Operating Guide on the Marketing and Documentation CD for the full operating details. Switch between the connected computers by either · Keyboard hotkeys - To switch to the next computer forwards press Shift then, +. Release Shift, before pressing +. To switch to the next computer backwards press Shift then, -. Release Shift, before pressing -. · Control software (See softcopy Operating Guide) · The OSD The OSD is also the place to adjust various settings as explained in the softcopy Operating Guide located on the Marketing and Documentation CD. 16. The OSD To display the OSD: Press Shift twice. The OSD Main window appears. Navigating the OSD To navigate up and down use the Up and Down arrow keys. To exit the OSD press Esc. 17. Selecting a computer To select a computer: 1. Navigate to the desired computer line. 2. Press Enter. The selected computer is accessed. An OSD label appears showing which computer is accessed. Note! When the OSD is displayed you cannot select computers using the keyboard hotkeys. 12 SMARTRACK 16 18. USB SUN Combo keys The SmartRack 16 PS/2 keyboard does not have a special SUN keypad to perform special functions in the SUN Operating System environment. So when a RICC USB or SUN is connected to a SUN computer, the RICC emulates these SUN keys using a set of key combinations called Combo keys. See the table below.
