PRODUCT SHEET Thanks to its unique Software Recognition Service (SRS), Snow is the only Software Asset Management (SAM) platform to provide 100% identification of the commercial software across your multi-platform IT estate. Understanding what commercial software is in use across the network is difficult. Even for a network with just 1,000 devices, there can easily be more than 10,000 different program files installed. For large organizations with more than 20,000 devices deployed, the challenge of accurately identifying the installed applications and understanding how they should be licensed is almost unimaginable. Snow’s unique Software Recognition Service removes the guesswork and legwork from identifying the applications, suites and bundles installed across the multi-platform network. It provides a dynamic addition to the Snow SAM platform, featuring both a continuously-updated library of software recognition ‘signatures’ as well as a target-driven service to identify new and unrecognized applications. HOW IT WORKS The Software Recognition Service starts the moment audit data is imported from the inventory solution into Snow License Manager. The same process is applied regardless of which supported inventory solution (Snow Inventory or supported third-party tool) to Snow is used. All program files are matched against Snow License Manager’s in-product software recognition engine (SRE), which covers more than 33,000 software publishers and over 217,000 applications. The software recognition engine is updated dynamically every 24 hours. Automatic hits are immediately shown in the asset repository of Snow License Manager – showing the accurate vendor name, product name, version and edition. Applications installed as part of a suite or commercial bundle are automatically grouped to aid license management. FROM THE DESKTOP TO THE DATACENTER Any unrecognized files are automatically uploaded to the Snow Software Recognition Service team for processing. Within the terms of the Service Level Policy, processed files will be returned to the customer and recognized applications will appear in Snow License Manager (all other Snow customers also benefit from this work through the daily dynamic software recognition updates). The Snow Software Recognition Service currently supports Windows, Mac OS X, UNIX and Linux platforms for software recognition. SNOWSOFTWARE.COM PRODUCT SHEET BE PART OF THE SNOW SAM COMMUNITY WHY DO YOU NEED SNOW’S SRS? The Snow Software Recognition Service benefits all subscriber organizations. With millions of devices around the world being audited each and every day, the chances are the Software Recognition Service will find, identify and update new application signatures long before they hit your network – meaning that you’re more likely than ever to have a 100% recognition rate of all installed software from day one. Within 24 hours of a new application being recognized for one Snow customer, it is available to all – the real sense of a SAM community. Inventory tools are great at collecting data. Lots of data. But even advanced solutions struggle when it comes to converting raw data into actionable intelligence. Few, if any, can identify suites and bundles and none have a dynamically updated software recognition engine. That means that there is still a knowledge gap between what’s physically installed on a device and what needs to be licensed. KEY FEATURES That’s why the Snow Software Recognition Service is so important. It completely removes the guesswork from application and suite identification – automatically focusing on commercial software and identifying the licensable entity. Automatically supports over 33,000 software publishers and more than 217,000 applications. Unidentified files recognized in as little as five days or even sooner. Support for Windows, Mac OS X, UNIX and Linux platforms. Dedicated team of software specialists update recognition engine daily. Works with major inventory solutions including Microsoft SCCM, HP DDMI, Altiris, LANdesk and FrontRange. Snow License Manager’s recognition engine is updated dynamically with new signatures. ADDED VALUE More than simply identifying what software and suites are installed across the network, Snow Software Recognition Service also provides a wealth of value-add information such as: • Matching software names, publishers and versions to official vendor catalogs – all software identified by the Software Recognition Service is automatically normalized to match the publishers’ naming conventions. • Upgrade and downgrade rights – understand appropriate upgrade paths and identify appropriate base licenses. • Application function – all software is categorized based on the UNSPSC standard, making it easy to sort applications by type. For organizations using multiple discovery technologies, this problem is increased exponentially as different inventory solutions report the same installs in different ways. In smaller organizations, the Software Recognition Service in an invaluable labor-saver. In larger multi-national organizations, successful Software Asset Management just isn’t possible without it.
