Located 20 miles north of Chicago in Northbrook, Illinois, C&D Recycling runs one of the state’s most advanced facilities for processing construction and demolition debris. In business since 2007, the company is owned and operated by Nancy Hirsch, Larry Hirsch and Sam Sciarretta.
High Traffic Volume More than 100 trucks visit the facility each day, delivering a total of 500 to 700 tons of debris. As a truck enters the site, it drives onto the truck scale to obtain the gross weight of the truck and its contents. The truck then drives to the material-processing area to dump its load.

weighed again. Subtracting the tare weight of the empty truck from the gross weight of the full truck provides an accurate net weight of the construction and demolition debris. The truck then leaves the facility to collect more debris or return its roll-off container to a designated site. C&D Recycling runs the debris through a waste-reducing machine, which processes material and separates metals at a rate of 70 tons per hour. The efficiency of the operation results in a quick turnaround. Each day the facility processes, weighs and ships the same amount of material that it receives. Weathering the Storm Without Costly Damage Howling winds, rising waters and lightning strikes – few things can match the destructive power of a major storm. Fight back with an innovative weighing technology that protects your vehicle scale from storm damage and its costly effects.
Beneath the surface of any modern vehicle scale is a network of expensive electronic equipment. Depending on the type of scale you have, it is likely to include load-cells, cables and junction boxes − all connected to a scale terminal and peripheral equipment. Storms can damage any or all of this equipment, causing costly downtime and repairs. The POWERCELL® PDX® load cell is an advanced weighing technology designed to stand up to the environmental forces that knock out conventional scales. When METTLER TOLEDO engineers developed this technology, they paid special attention to the design features that make other weighing systems vulnerable to
storm damage. To improve reliability, they beefed up lightning protection, eliminated junction boxes and made the network watertight. Lightning Strikes Lightning strikes the earth about 8.6 million times every day. One of those strikes is enough to put a vehicle scale out of commission. When a scale’s electronic equipment is damaged, there is little you can do except foot the bill for replacing it. The POWERCELL® PDX® load cell was designed to guard its internal electronics against lightning damage. In case of a voltage surge, built-in surge-protection circuitry redirects the current to ground.

A POWERCELL® PDX® network with the StrikeShield™ lightning-protection system creates a virtually impregnable line of defense for the entire scale: load cells, cables and terminal. No other lightning protection system is as complete or as thoroughly tested. Independent laboratories have proven the POWERCELL® PDX® load cell’s ability to survive multiple lightning strikes of up to 80,000 amperes. That is more than twice the destructive power of the average lightning strike (30,000 amperes). POWERCELL® PDX® load-cell technology recently proved itself at a facility in northeast Texas. A severe lightning strike knocked out the entire facility’s power. According to the company’s office manager, “Power was off for more than two days, our computer server was a total loss, and we lost our main phone line for over a month, but the scale made it through without any damage.”
Despite the popular misconception, lightning can strike twice. A scale in northern Arkansas suffered lightning damage repeatedly during its first four years of operation. Repairs were expensive enough, but the downtime caused the facility to lose business. When the POWERCELL® PDX® load cell was introduced, the facility’s owner decided to put an end to the costly lightning damage by upgrading to the new technology. Rain and Flooding In conventional vehicle scales, vital electronics are housed in leak-prone junction boxes. Floodwaters easily penetrate the boxes, causing downtime that lasts long after the storm has passed. The entire POWERCELL® PDX® load cell network is sealed to IP68 standards. Each load cell is hermetically sealed and equipped with a breach-detection system that alerts the scale operator if the enclosure is penetrated. All cables and connectors are designed to keep out moisture even when fully submerged in water.
