Solid Waste Industrial Weighing and Measuring Recycling Operation Turns Debris into Cash Reducing costs and protecting the environment are goals that are driving an increased demand to recycle construction and demolition debris. A recycling center in Illinois is meeting that demand efficiently with the help of a METTLER TOLEDO truck scale. C&D Recycling processes debris that is generated during the construction or demolition of buildings, roads and bridges. Many of the materials in the debris can be recovered and used to make new products that include recycled content. Recycling the debris reduces construction and disposal costs while protecting the environment by keeping reusable material out of landfills. its customers efficient service with competitive pricing. Covering the Greater Chicago area, the facility provides recycling services for drop-off and roll-off debris from construction and demolition sites. The primary types of debris processed are wood, brick, concrete, masonry, drywall, cardboard, plastic, roofing, siding and metals. Located 20 miles north of Chicago in Northbrook, Illinois, C&D Recycling runs one of the state’s most advanced facilities for processing construction and demolition debris. In business since 2007, the company is owned and operated by Nancy Hirsch, Larry Hirsch and Sam Sciarretta. High Traffic Volume More than 100 trucks visit the facility each day, delivering a total of 500 to 700 tons of debris. As a truck enters the site, it drives onto the truck scale to obtain the gross weight of the truck and its contents. The truck then drives to the material-processing area to dump its load. C&D Recycling uses state-of-the-art equipment, which allows the company to offer After the debris has been unloaded, the empty truck returns to the scale to be 8 News Vehicle Scales weighed again. Subtracting the tare weight of the empty truck from the gross weight of the full truck provides an accurate net weight of the construction and demolition debris. The truck then leaves the facility to collect more debris or return its roll-off container to a designated site. C&D Recycling runs the debris through a waste-reducing machine, which processes material and separates metals at a rate of 70 tons per hour. The efficiency of the operation results in a quick turnaround. Each day the facility processes, weighs and ships the same amount of material that it receives. The METTLER TOLEDO truck scale at C&D Recycling features a concrete driving surface reinforced with a steel framework. POWERCELL® load-cell technology assures both the company and its customers of accurate weighing of the debris that is being bought and sold. It also provides exceptional reliability, keeping the scale operating day in and day out. Like any facility that depends on one scale for its weighing needs, C&D Recycling cannot afford downtime. On a typical day, the scale at C&D Recycling weighs more than 100 trucks carrying more than 500 tons of debris. The owners say they are happy with the decision to purchase the truck scale. After shopping around, they decided that the METTLER TOLEDO scale was the best product and best value for their operation. METTLER TOLEDO also helps ensure the scale’s continued high performance by providing service and preventive maintenance. www.mt.com/vehicle Larry Hirsch and Sam Sciarretta of C&D Recycling say they chose a METTLER TOLEDO truck scale because it provided the best value for their recycling operation. Reliable Floor Scales For Heavy-Duty Weighing Bigger isn’t always better. Waste facilities weigh most materials by the truckload, but a floor scale is often the best solution for smaller items and high-value materials. METTLER TOLEDO builds floor scales to handle concentrated loads, such as forklift traffic. If you buy or sell material by weight, your profits depend on the accuracy of your scale. But you need more than just precision. You need a scale that can stand up to heavy-duty use and continue to weigh accurately time after time. With 100% end loading, they can handle forklift traffic and other concentrated loads without being damaged. Sturdy frames and bumpers protect the load cells from side-loading damage. Rocker-Pin Suspension METTLER TOLEDO supplies floor scales with a rocker-pin suspension designed for the real-world demands of heavy-duty weighing. When a load is placed on the scale platform, the rocker pin automatically aligns itself in the ideal weighing position. Unlike a threaded-foot suspension, a rocker pin concentrates the vertical load at one point on the load cell. The result is more accurate weighing and greater reliability. Designed for Durability METTLER TOLEDO floor scales are strong enough to withstand the constant use and heavy loads typical of waste facilities. Because fixed receivers and other key components need no adjustment, the floor scale will continue to perform reliably without the need for frequent service. www.mt.com/floorscale Epoxy painted steel or stainless steel for harsh environments. Overload protection prevents damage to load cells. Load cells are hermetically sealed to keep out moisture and dirt. Fixed bumpers protect load cells from side-loading damage. It takes far too much time and inevitably leads to costly errors. By automating data entry, businesses of all sizes can significantly improve the efficiency of their processes. DataBridge™ SS scale software is a new product designed to streamline vehicle weighing. It manages weighing operations, collecting and processing weight data automatically. By speeding up transactions and reducing errors, this software can make a real difference in a business’s efficiency. It is already making a big difference for a facility in Indiana, USA that purchases material by weight. Most of the trucks entering the facility deliver more than one type of material. In the past, the scale operator wrote down vehicle weights as ma- terial was unloaded. After using a calculator to figure the net weight of each material, he then typed the information into a cash- register program. Unloading a truck often required weighings and calculations for as many as a dozen materials. Because the scale operator was writing or typing all this information manually, there were too many opportunities for error. It was easy for the scale operator to lose track of which weight was for which material, and the handwritten weights were sometimes hard to read. With DataBridge™ SS software, the procedure is much simpler. When a loaded truck pulls onto the scale, the operator identifies the truck and clicks a button to record the weight. Each time a material is unloaded, the software records the new vehicle weight and calculates the net weight and price of the material. According to the owner, “The difference has been night and day with the software. It has really helped us. It’s speeded things up a ton and helped with errors. Before we got it, we were mixing up trucks and weights. That doesn’t happen anymore.” Virtual Scale Indicators display the current weight on each scale. Click one to select a scale and start a transaction. Data Buttons make it easy to select vehicles, accounts, materials and other data for a transaction. Ticket Preview window shows the ticket being created as each step of a transaction is completed. Transaction Buttons complete the steps needed for weighing vehicles, reprinting tickets and searching for records. 4 METTLER TOLEDO METTLER TOLEDO Solid Waste Mining & Aggregates News 8 News 9 DataBridge™ SS Software Weighing Screen Designed for Efficiency DataBridge™ SS software is designed for businesses that don’t need complex systems. METTLER TOLEDO Waste METTLER TOLEDO Mining &Solid Aggregates 8 News 9 7 Load Cell Technology Weathering the Storm Without Costly Damage Howling winds, rising waters and lightning strikes – few things can match the destructive power of a major storm. Fight back with an innovative weighing technology that protects your vehicle scale from storm damage and its costly effects. Beneath the surface of any modern vehicle scale is a network of expensive electronic equipment. Depending on the type of scale you have, it is likely to include load-cells, cables and junction boxes − all connected to a scale terminal and peripheral equipment. Storms can damage any or all of this equipment, causing costly downtime and repairs. The POWERCELL® PDX® load cell is an advanced weighing technology designed to stand up to the environmental forces that knock out conventional scales. When METTLER TOLEDO engineers developed this technology, they paid special attention to the design features that make other weighing systems vulnerable to storm damage. To improve reliability, they beefed up lightning protection, eliminated junction boxes and made the network watertight. Lightning Strikes Lightning strikes the earth about 8.6 million times every day. One of those strikes is enough to put a vehicle scale out of commission. When a scale’s electronic equipment is damaged, there is little you can do except foot the bill for replacing it. The POWERCELL® PDX® load cell was designed to guard its internal electronics against lightning damage. In case of a voltage surge, built-in surge-protection circuitry redirects the current to ground. Testing by independent laboratories has proven the POWERCELL PDX load cell’s ability to survive lightning strikes as strong as 80,000 amperes. 8 METTLER TOLEDO METTLER TOLEDO Solid Waste Mining & Aggregates News 8 News 9 Cables and connectors are watertight, even when fully submerged for prolonged periods. A POWERCELL® PDX® network with the StrikeShield™ lightning-protection system creates a virtually impregnable line of defense for the entire scale: load cells, cables and terminal. No other lightning protection system is as complete or as thoroughly tested. Independent laboratories have proven the POWERCELL® PDX® load cell’s ability to survive multiple lightning strikes of up to 80,000 amperes. That is more than twice the destructive power of the average lightning strike (30,000 amperes). POWERCELL® PDX® load-cell technology recently proved itself at a facility in northeast Texas. A severe lightning strike knocked out the entire facility’s power. According to the company’s office manager, “Power was off for more than two days, our computer server was a total loss, and we lost our main phone line for over a month, but the scale made it through without any damage.” Despite the popular misconception, lightning can strike twice. A scale in northern Arkansas suffered lightning damage repeatedly during its first four years of operation. Repairs were expensive enough, but the downtime caused the facility to lose business. When the POWERCELL® PDX® load cell was introduced, the facility’s owner decided to put an end to the costly lightning damage by upgrading to the new technology. Rain and Flooding In conventional vehicle scales, vital electronics are housed in leak-prone junction boxes. Floodwaters easily penetrate the boxes, causing downtime that lasts long after the storm has passed. The entire POWERCELL® PDX® load cell network is sealed to IP68 standards. Each load cell is hermetically sealed and equipped with a breach-detection system that alerts the scale operator if the enclosure is penetrated. All cables and connectors are designed to keep out moisture even when fully submerged in water. water. In the past, that meant expensive service calls and downtime when the floodwaters receded. To solve the problem, the facility manager purchased a scale equipped with POWERCELL® PDX® load cells. While nothing can stop the flooding, the new scale is ready to weigh as soon as the water is gone. After major rain storms, a material recovery facility in south Florida experiences flooding that leaves its truck scale under A barge terminal operator on the Mississippi River faced similar problems. Periodic flooding leaves the truck scale under water for 30 days or more. After switching to POWERCELL® PDX® technology, the operator was able to rely on the load-cell network’s electronics to remain dry even when the scale is submerged for prolonged periods. The cost of damage from a major storm can be astronomical. There’s no reason for your vehicle scale to add to the problem. Find out how POWERCELL® PDX® load cells can help your business weather the toughest storms. www.mt.com/powercell The watertight POWERCELL PDX load-cell network withstands floodwaters that can cripple a conventional scale’s electronics.
