Product Information Report Solvents Solvents Solvent are used to break down other common solids or liquids and keep them in solution so they can be removed more easily. Applications Solvents are used to break down grease, oil, dirt, grime, tar, wax, adhesives, asphalt, inks, graffiti and more. • Parts washer cleaners • Heavy-duty degreasers • Adhesive removers • Coating removers Types of Solvents All solvents react and clean in the same way. However, there are different types, each with its own cleaning characteristics. Chlorinated Solvents • Typically the strongest class of solvents • Fast evaporating • Unpleasant odor • Can attack plastics • Ready to use – can’t be diluted Orange-Based Solvents • Contain no hazardous fumes • Deodorizes as it degreases • Pleasant orange fragrance • Flammable in concentrated form • Can be diluted with water – refer to product labels for specific diluting ratios Petroleum Solvents • Traditional solvents • Oil-based • Slow evaporating • Flammable • Can be diluted with stoddard solvent, mineral spirits and kerosene – refer to product labels for specific diluting agents and ratios Water-Based Solvents • Soluble in water • Leaves no residue after rinsing • Usually contain butyl, caustic or alkaline cleaners • Usually non-flammable • Can be diluted with water – refer to product labels for specific diluting ratios (1 of 6) Copyright © 2014 Lawson Products, Inc.
