SBO 18" Telescope Closing Procedure 1 . SOMMERS-BAUSCH OBSERVATORY 18-INCH TELESCOPE CLOSING PROCEDURE 2-2015 V. 6.0 SBO 18" Telescope Closing Procedure 2 2-2015 V. 6.0 CLOSING PROCEDURE 1. Ancillary Equipment Properly shut down any ancillary equipment (such as the CCD camera) that you may have utilize. Consult the pertinent equipment manuals or sections. 2. Stow the Telescope: a. Open the TCS Stow Tab: Telescope >Movement> Offset/Stow b. Note the box directing you to Turn front panel TRACK switch off. Do so on the MDC. Track status light will turn red on the TCS screen. Failure to manually switch off tracking may prevent the telescope from reaching its final stow position. The telescope may appear to stall or may cause the telescope to track away from the standard stow position, causing initialization problems for the next user. c. Click the "Apply" Button in the center box of the Stow Menu. The 18" telescope does not require a confirming Start Slew; movement to the stow position is immediate. The telescope will move in a two-step process: first, it slews to the meridian (HA = 0, RA = ST), and then moves southward to DEC = -40° (altitude of 10°, or zenith distance of 80°). 3. Confirm successful stowage of the 18-inch telescope: a. T h e SLEW ENABLED status message does not show. b. Hour Angle (HA) field shows 0h00m00s and is not changing. c. Declination (DEC) field approximately –40°00'00". reads d. T he Roof Enabled light is green on the interlock system. If any of these tests fail, press the STOP or CANCEL button and repeat step 2. It is likely that you did not have the track switch turned off. 4. Secure the 18-Inch Telescope SBO 18" Telescope Closing Procedure a. b. 3 2-2015 V. 6.0 Replace the covers on the telescopes and ancillaries (8" piggyback, 5" finder, flip secondary cover, and 18" telescope tube). Press the red latching Halt Motors button IN. This step decouples the telescope motors from the TCS software control. Failure to press in the Halt Motors Button will permit the telescope to "spasm" the next time it is powered up, which will cause initialization problems for the next user. c. Turn off the Motor Driver Chassis power switch (lights will go out). 5. Close the Roof: a. Depress the Close Button on the north wall. b. Watch the roof as it closes to insure that it clears the 18" telescope! Be prepared to immediately hit the STOP button if you observe any complications. 6. Turn the Interlock Power Switch OFF (bottom right of 18" MDC desk panel). 7. Shut down XEphem software: a. Close XEphem program. [File] → [Quit]. Answer "yes" to the "Exit xephem?" box. 8. Close the TCS program. Answer "yes" to the "really close?" query. 9. Log-Out of the Computer: a. Re-open the internet browser and proceed to the log-out page. http://cosmos.colorado.edu/sbo/special/sboLogout.html b. Complete the on-line log-out entries and "submit". This provides both a permanent record of your session and also valuable meteorological records. c. Complete an on-line malfunction report if necessary. Generates an e-mail to Keith which will be seen first thing the following day. d. Terminate the browser window. e. Shutdown the TCS computer first, then the XEphem computer. NOTE: Do not power down individual components! The monitors automatically go into sleep mode, and should not be powered down. Displays will be scrambled for the next user if the computer is booted with the monitors off! SBO 18" Telescope Closing Procedure 4 2-2015 V. 6.0 10. Clean up the Observing Deck: a. Replace equipment (stepladders, chairs, and binoculars) and put debris in trash. b. Check that the open deck, north emergency exit, and all cabinet doors are locked. c. Turn off all lights and the planisphere display on the Observing Deck. d. Stop, look, and listen before leaving the Observing Deck for anything you might have overlooked. e. Before leaving SBO check for other building occupants, and insure (by agreement or by your action) that the lights are off and the building is secured.
