Corvair News: Sons (and Daughters) of Erin St. Patrick's Day Parade The Crowd Was Green With Envy! ~ Report and Photos By G. H. Ransom
Every year since the earth started cooling (it seems) the organizers of the Sons of Erin St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee in Henderson have been producing a feel good mobile extravaganza down Water Street from Major to Ocean Avenue. Yup, strut 'yer stuff whilst wearin' some green.
This parade is a mixed bag of large and small floats, marching bands, civic groups, and most importantly, classic cars. For 2016, once again the combined chariots from the Vegas Vairs and High Rollers car clubs placed 26 veteran rides in tandem on the unsuspecting streets of "Hooterville," Nevada.
And yes, the spectator crowds lined three to five deep on both sides of the road shouted and clapped their approval. The High Rollers occupied parade position #19 with 18 entrants. These vehicles were chronologically lined up from oldest to newest with a 1929 Ford Model A sedan leading the pack. The trailing caboose position was initiated by a 1974 VW Thing.
The Vegas Vairs Corvair Club in parade position #20 presented a mixture of five early and three late model car body styles; three were convertibles. No Corvair trucks or mini vans participated.

Corvair News (continued): (Continued from page 5)
All vehicles were trimmed out in some form of green St. Patrick's Day themed decorations. It was truly a fun affair.
Afterwards the High Rollers gathered for lunch at Sunset Pizza in Henderson while the Chevy air cooled gang convoyed to the Railroad Pass Casino in Boulder City to lunch and join the Hudson/Studebaker "Orphan" Car Show. The weather was superb, the crowds were appreciative, and no elder car broke down - that I'm aware of, anyhow. This august affair will take place again next year. Sooooooo, why not join in the fun and camaraderie and add your classic to the merrymaking, eh? Just don't be green with envy! - - - - Dirty (I love parades) Harry

sponsored by Nestlé. It was a education park to learn the kids traffic rules. Therefore the uniformed policemen (not soldiers). The last time I drove such a Corvair pedal car was 1995 (a club member has restored one).”
Dave Newell was contacted for the inside scoop on these cars, and the picture. Dave is a Corvair and GM Historian. Here is his reply:
Urs Tanner Former president of the Swiss Corvair Club
“Yep those are real. They were made by GM Suisse in their shops for the international exhibition in Lausanne Switzerland. The kiddy driver's roadway layout (meant to teach traffic laws & road manners to kids attending the exhibition) was co-sponsored by Nestlé chocolate who provided the dumb looking hats. The pedal cars were later used in a traveling GM driver ed exhibit that set up all over Switzerland. The Swiss Corvair club has one of the cars as does a friend of mine in the Netherlands.” From a Swiss Corvair owner: “The photo dates from the national expo in Lausanne Switzerland in 1964. About 40 pedal Corvair cars were

Tech Articles & Tips: The Preventative Maintenance Series by Mike Dawson Reprinted from the Heart of America Corvair Owners Association (HACOA) VairCor Newsletter
Rochester Carburetor Idle Corrections Most of the maintenance articles I write about are inspired by some type of Corvair related challenge that I have experienced recently; this article falls in that category. While performing service work last month on a ’65 140 I noticed it did not idle as well as it should. The owner had not mentioned an idle problem but it was there and despite balance check and mixture screw adjustment, it remained. Diagnosing idle problems can be broken down into three areas all of which definitely affect idle:
carburetor cleaner over them or simply put your hand over the top and see if you feel vacuum. The secondary carburetors have no idle circuit so a miss-aligned throttle plate is simply a vacuum leak that affects primary carburetor idle.
1. Overall engine tune condition: This would include correct 3. Carburetors: First check valve adjustment, a compression check that shows all the balance with a vacuum cylinders the same with reasonable compression, and gauge or Unisyn and be sure the vacuum advance is not minimal blow-by. Check air filter. The distributor shaft, being pulled in by the right side carburetor. Look for cam, advance mechanism, wires, plugs, cap, rotor, and linkage that does not return properly. Remove idle mixture initial timing can affect idle. Be sure the balancer check screws and use compressed air to blow through the holes. marks have not moved. Old gas can affect performance If idle problems persist, use a can of spray carburetor more than you think, so don’t overlook that when cleaner (not Brakleen) to gently mist over the carburetors checking things. Note: a high performance camshaft (260+) one at a time at idle. If the idle smooths out, and both #1 can cause a "lumpy" idle. and #2 above have been checked, you obviously have an internal carburetor problem. 2. Vacuum leaks: They lean out a mixture beyond what an idle mixture adjustment can correct. There are a lot of possibilities: base gasket/insulator issues, loose carburetor mounts, damage to carburetor base mounting areas or head flange areas, split or swelled balance tube hoses (very common), ruptured choke pull offs or their hoses, the two hoses for the vacuum modulator on Powerglide models, PCV hoses can harden and leak if original, the fixed orifice (0.062) may have been drilled out by others, and the PCV valve can have a weak spring (check by plugging the carburetor end and observe the idle change). In general, replacing the PCV valve with a fixed orifice (0.062) is a good upgrade for idle performance. Be sure 140 secondary carburetors are not leaking vacuum; mist
Our carburetors were designed by engineers working with flow principals based on fuel that we no longer use, so some modifications are helpful. Generally speaking, slightly richer mixtures benefit our aging designs, particularly with ethanolinfected gas. When you clean and check carburetors look at the following: worn throttle shafts (vacuum leak), mismatched mixture needles and the holes they meter (broken tips stuck in the hole are not uncommon), metering jets should be 0.053 or even larger, correct float level, no loose throttle plates and with the notch (when applicable) in the throttle plate lined up with the transition slot. The major item is to have matched venturi clusters: check for warped cluster bases (straight edge (Continued on page 8)

them) and check that all specs are the same from side to side. The small brass pickup tubes must be clear and identical from side to side (see photo below).
nothing. That was confirmed when I re-installed them on the engine. I had the same poor idle that improved with misting carburetor cleaner over the tops at idle. With the carburetors apart the second time I drilled out the pickup tube on the venturi to 0.030 from the original 0.026. I left the idle air bleed at 0.074. Once the carburetors were backon the car the idle was back to normal. I reviewed my collection of clusters and found that I have eight different combinations of venturi cluster idle pickup tube/air bleed sizes listed for 64+ models. The majority of the clusters were 26/74 but there were also six venturi clusters that were between 28/74 and 30/74. Maybe those were A/C cars, but it does indicate that a richer mixture was required for some engines. The pickup tube to air bleed combinations for early models I have checked is 23/86 and 26/86. I am continually learning things and the next time I have an idle problem I will refer to this article; it would have saved me one extra carburetor R & R.
Also check the size of the air bleed on the top above the pickup tube. Use small numbered drill bits to confirm that sizes match. In my recent search for the cause of a poor idle I checked off the items in 1-3 with no resolution so I disassembled the carburetors, cleaned and checked everything but found

Collector’s love for Corvairs still strong, even though some have hit the road by Jeff Peek
Pete Koehler loves Corvairs – 1960 models, specifically. In fact, his passion for them is so intense that his recent decision to pare down his collection may have been a bit of a surprise to some. Not to worry, Koehler insists. The sky isn’t falling. He simply can’t get around like he used to. “It’s just a lack of mobility,” said the long-time member of the Detroit Area Corvair Club. “It isn’t life threatening, just fun threatening.”

Corvair Movie Nostalgia The Chevrolet Corvair has been a fixture in movies and on television since it was first released. Early on, GM used sponsored TV series like Bewitched as a way to introduce a large audience to their newest models. Apparently there are a lot of people car spotting now and they’re cataloging their findings in searchable internet databases. It’s easy to get a quick list of most Corvair appearances on the Internet Movie Cars Database (http://www.imcdb.org/). The IMCDB has 455 Corvairs to look through!
