Final Cut Pro 7.0.3
“Log and Transfer” is used to recognize AVCHD recorded memory media. It can convert AVCHD and MPEG2 SD clips into ProRes 422. * AVCHD 1080 60p/50p cannot be recognized. * MPEG2 SD clips divided into 2GB files cannot be combined. SONY PROFESSIONAL
FCPX
“Import From Camera” is used to recognize AVCHD recorded memory media. It can transcode AVCHD and MPEG2 SD clips into QT(.mov) wrapper. (User can select whether to edit natively or to convert it to ProRes 422.) [UPDATE]: FCPX 10.0.4 can import AVCHD 2.0 1080 60p/50p * MPEG2 SD clips divided into 2GB files cannot be combined.

ATTN for FCP7 , FCPX For FCP7 users Update the FCP to 7.0.3 and also the Mac OS to the newest update (after v10.6.8) Update of QuickTime7 to the newest update is highly recommend. If you cannot convert AVCHD to ProRes422, please try to disable the HyperThread with Xcode function. If you need to combine MPEG2 SD spanned clips, please use Content Browser and combine it into one .mpg file and copy back to a MemoryStick. The file must be placed under “\MP_root\10xPNV01” folder, then L&T will be able to recognize. [UPDATE]: Combining MPEG2 SD on Mac environment is available using the Mac version of Content Browser.
For FCPX users Update of FCPX and Mac OS to the newest version is highly recommend. If you need to combine MPEG2 SD spanned clips, please use CMU on Windows and combine it into one .mpg file and copy back to a MemoryStick. The file must be placed under “\MP_root\10xPNV01” folder, then “Import from Camera” will be able to recognize. If you want to install both FCP7 and FCPX on a same Mac, you will need to go through some procedures, please check the Apple support web page for details. The benefit of doing this is, then you will be able to use the QT re-wrap of AVCHD on FCPX and import the QT onto FCP7.
How to import 1080 60p/50p onto Mac environment. FCP7 and FCPX (10.0.1) cannot recognize AVCHD 1080 60p/50p. If you need to import the clips on FCP - Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac can convert AVCHD 1080 60p/50p with Dolby AC3 audio to ProRes 422 1080 60p/50p. Final Mate does not recognize timecode. - Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 can convert AVCHD 1080 60p/50p with Dolby AC3 audio to ProRes 422 1080 60p/50p. Premiere can convert timecode. *Please see Premiere section. *AVCHD 1080 60p/50p with LPCM clips cannot be recognized on Mac OS environment. Please use EDIUS6.03 or Vegas Pro (10.0e more after version) on Windows, then export the audio file separately. SONY PROFESSIONAL
Adobe Premiere CS5.5 / CS6
“File” / “Import” is not recommended for AVCHD import. (Cannot recognize timecode.)
“Media Browser” function will recognize the AVCHD folder automatically. Import clips on to the project window. This is the best way to import AVCHD clips on Premiere Pro, since it will recognize the timecode. Premiere Pro CS 5.5 supports 1080 60p/50p with Dolby Digital audio. [UPDATE]: Premiere Pro CS 6 supports 1080 60p/50p with LPCM audio. SONY PROFESSIONAL
ATTN for Adobe Premiere CS5.5 / CS6 For Premiere Pro CS5 or CS5.5 users Premiere Pro can import AVCHD clips from “Import” on the “File” menu, however when using this method, the timecode will not be recognized. The best way to import AVCHD clips is to use the “Media Browser”. This means that for Premiere Pro users it is recommended NOT to use CMU. “”Media Browser” needs to recognize the AVCHD folder structure, therefore it will not recognize clips imported onto the PC or Mac via CMU. Premiere Pro can recognize the timecode of MPEG2 SD clips. If you need to combine MPEG2 SD spanning clips, please use CMU and combine them into one .mpg file and then, import using “Import” in the “File” menu. (*The recommended import method is different for AVCHD and MPEG2 SD)

GV EDIUS 6 / 6.5
GV EDIUS can import AVCHD files (.mts, .m2ts) directly to bin using “Add Files”. “Source Browser” can recognize AVCHD clips on memory media and “Add Transfer to Bin” can copy them to HDD, It can combine AVCHD 2GB spanned clips but cannot combine MPEG2 SD spanned clips. However, “Source Browser” will change the file name and copy them to the same folder as the project file. Please note that then, it will become difficult to re-use the files on other software. To avoid this, it is recommended to use CMU for coping AVCHD and MPEG2 SD clips to HDD before importing the “.m2ts” or “.mpg” files to EDIUS. SONY PROFESSIONAL
Avid Media Composer 6 MC6 support AVCHD native import via AMA AVCHD Plug-in. Please download AMA AVCHD Plug-in from Avid web site and install your MC6 installed system. http://www.avid.com/US/products/Avid-Media-Access MC 6.5.3 or MC7.0 installer include with new AVCHD AMA plugin. So no more separate install it and it support AVCHD 60p/50p. “Import” traditional workflow, transcoding to DNxHD. “Link to AMA Volume”, import AVCHD clips native on AVCHD folder via AMA Plug-in. *It’s recommend for case of copy from all AVCHD folder on memory. “Link to AMA Files”, import AVCHD files (.mts, .m2ts) native via AMA Plug-in. *It’s recommend for case of copy CMU used.
ATTN : MC6 (AMA AVCHD Plug-in installed) can recognized AVCHD recording memory automatically, but MC6 cannot operate to copy from memory to HDD. (“Consolidate” cannot work AVCHD native copy.)
It’s recommend to copy from memory to HDD before MC6 launch. SONY PROFESSIONAL
Sony Creative software Vegas Pro 11 / 12
Vegas Pro can import AVCHD files (.mts,.m2ts) directly to the project using “Open”. It is recommended to use CMU for coping AVCHD and MPEG2 SD clips to HDD, before importing the “.m2ts” or “.mpg” files to Vegas.
SONY PROFESSIONAL
“Device Explorer” can recognize AVCHD clips on memory media or AVCHD folder on HDD. It can copy the clips from memory to HDD and combine the 2GB spanned AVCHD clips, but cannot combine MPEG2 SD 2GB spanned clips. The folder to import the files can be set on “Device Properties”.
TMPGEnc Authoring Works5 (FYI)
Smart rendering of H.264 is available on a BD authoring software called “TMPGEnc Authoring Works5” from Pegasys. Using this software, AVCHD v1.0 recorded files can be authored onto a BD without re-rendering with and without menu authoring. This will allow users a fast authoring using the advantages of smart rendering. *For example, 84 clips/total 90min/13.6GB AVCHD clips can be authored without menu in 37min. (Mobile corei7 2630QM 2GHz) BDMV structure creation(14.5min, Disc writing 22.5min)

What is Smart Rendering(Segment Encoding)? When outputting a timeline with several video clips below… Video clip A
Video clip B
Video clip C
Video clip D
NLE software will re-render the total timeline * Red part is the part which NLE will re-render
When using “smart rendering”, NLE will only re-render the portion where editing is applied. This will reduce rendering time and degradation of picture quality. * Red part is the part which NLE will re-render
Smart rendering of H.264/Long GOP is said to be very difficult, therefore there are not many software which can do this. However, TMPGEnc Authoring Works5 can use smart rendering for BD authoring. SONY PROFESSIONAL

MPEG2-SD recording folder “.mpg”is MPEG2 SD video stream data. During long recordings, the clips are automatically divided(spanned) 2GB. *Approx.25mins divided when recording.
ATTN: Do not move or copy individual clips via Windows Explorer or the Macintosh Finder, as this result in unusable media on the target drive. For copying individual clips to HDD, use the Content Management Utility (CMU). Windows Explorer or the Macintosh Finder may be used to do an archive of the entire contents of either a memory card or HXR-FMU128, as long as all ancillary and hidden files are include in the transfer. It’s recommend to enable “Show hidden files and folders” in the Folder Options “View” tab of Explorer Tools on Windows system .

About Content Browser Originally, “Content Management Utility” (CMU) was the companion software for NXCAMs. However, We have merged this function with “XDCAM Browser” and created the “Content Browser”(CB). There are new features such as writing back to MS/SD or FMU, and the availability of a Mac version which were not available on CMU. However, in terms of workflow, there are differences.
Content Browser
Content Browser will act as a bridge software to import clips copied from a SxS to an internal HDD and hand it over to NLE software
Copy of recorded data
Content Browser
Copy of recorded data
SONY PROFESSIONAL
In case of NXCAM, Content Browser can copy the clips from a MS/SD card to an internal HDD. However, since it will convert it to a original format, some NLE will not recognize the clips.
Data copy from NXCAM to internal HDD on PC Most of the latest NLE software will recognize the AVCHD folder structure, and the divided 2GB clips on each NLE software browser. Therefore, for copying AVCHD data onto internal HDD on PC, there are two ways. One is to use the NLE software browser to copy the clips (FCP, Vegas Pro, EDIUS). Two, copy the enitire structure inside the MS/SD onto a HDD and ingest afterwards using a NLE software(Premiere Pro, Media Composer). Content Browser will use a original format internally to organize copied files… - Cannot ingest onto FCP7, FCPX directly. (need reconstruction of AVCHD folder structure) - Premiere Pro will not recognize AVCHD clip’s timecode, and also cannot combine 2GB divided files - Media Composer, Vegas Pro, EDIUS cannot combine 2GB divided clips
Clips copied to a HDD can be ingested to a NLE software using AVCHD reconstruction function in the “EXPORT” tab in CB. (Also in the “EXPORT” tab there is a function to combine files (2GB divided files). On Mac OS, this will allow to combine MPEG2 SD when ingesting into FCP)

ATTN.) Mac OS 10.8 Mountain Lion On Mac OD 10.8 Mountain Lion’s Finder, AVCHD is automatically recognized. There will be a “Q” icon on the AVCHD root folder and inside the folder, each clip will be shown directly viewable on QuickTime Player. However, all other folders such as AVF Info will be hidden. Therefore it will be impossible to copy all the files under the AVCHD root folder. Please use the tips below to change the settings.
Open “Macintosh HD” “Application” “Utlity” “Terminal”. Write down the script below. defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean true Re-open “Finder” and write down the script on “Terminal” killall Finder This will enable to display the hidden folder and files. If you want to reset the setting, write down the script below on the “Terminal” defaults delete com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles killall Finder *This feature is not an ordinary command for Mac OS. This feature might drop in the future version of Mac

Difference between CB & CMU NXCAM companion software will change from CMU to CB. CB has the benefit of organizing clips together with XDCAM, availability of companion software for mac environment for the first time for NXCAM. Also, it will allow new features such as writing back of AVCHD to MS/SD media. However, there will be some change in usability compared to CMU. The biggest issue is the difference in the format used to manage the clips. Another one is the lack of handling 3D MVC files, and the ability to divide it into L and R clips. Improved Points from CMU − Mac OS compatibility − Write back of AVCHD clips to MS/SD *Clips already imported using CMU are not included − Ability to organize clips with XDCAM * “Status”,“Title” metadata can be added on to AVCHD clips also, However the original meta data included on AVCHD differs from that of XDCAM. Essence Marks and XMPilot features are not available for AVCHD either.
Different Points from CMU − No AVCHD Flash band correction − Cannot divide 3D MVC clips into L & R clips − Needs network activation using an activation code *CB does not need to connect the camcorder in order to install
