HO M E V I D EO Nowadays, projectors and playback devices deliver perfect quality. Nevertheless, the pictures are often out of focus or faded. There is a reason for this: DVD or Blu-ray players emit unbelievably large amounts of information simultaneously at high speed. If the cables are not perfectly designed, the colours and contours fade and the picture is grainy. The main cause of inadequate pictures and sound is the wrong cabling. Or in other words: the quality of your device is only as good as the cables it is used with. Video cables from in-akustik ease the way for signals and protect them from external interference. For all picture connections.
h dmi ™ s p e c ial The future is digital: fast, sharp and flexible. Extremely high data rates (> 10 gigabytes) need to be transmitted smoothly. The right cable is crucial for signal transmissions. The current standard is HDMITM.
HDMITM is a digital interface for picture and sound for AV devices. HDMITM stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. Previously, digitally stored pictures and sound data were converted with a D/A converter to an analogue signal and then transmitted to the TV. However, as digital parts were increasingly used and digitalised forms became mainstream (such as DVD, Blu-ray, DVB etc), the weaknesses of the previous digital analogue and analogue digital conversions became even more obvious. HDMITM transmits digital data, as well as digital sound data and automatically synchronises the individual devices with one another. And all that in one single cable.
Differences in quality even for Digital signal transmission! What is the difference between the 1.0 m Reference HDMITM cable and the 1.0 m Star HDMITM cable? Many users are under the false impression that transmitting digital data generally works without any errors. Something better or worse doesn’t seem to exist. This applies to the Internet. There the recipient keeps asking the sender for the digital data until the content has been transmitted properly (check test).
However in the audio/video sector, there is no time to compare digital data and request it again. So error correction is used for LCDs, LED-TVs, plasmas etc. The more detailed and faster a certain picture sequence is, the higher the data rate is to be transmitted. The data rate is e.g. far higher for a camera pan over the spectators in a football stadium than for an interview after the game. However, the higher the data rate, the more errors are caused by the HDMITM cable. Compression artefacts occur even though the screen has error correction. The picture loses contour and focus. But these errors can be reduced with better cable quality. The more intricate the shielding, the more superior the materials and the less the engineering tolerances at 100 Ohm impedance are, then the lower the number of errors and better the picture quality. Even for short transmission distances. That is why the picture quality is significantly higher with our Reference HDMITM cable, than the standard HDMITM cable (see Figure). Fast camera movements, detailed picture sequences and fast-moving action scenes gain in contour and picture sharpness. That is the difference. The HDMI™ standards With the release of the HDMITM 1.4 specification, there are now five HDMITM cable types to choose from, each designed to meet a particular performance standard. Here is an overview of the HDMITM cable types, their capabilities, and how to tell them apart. Standard HDMI™ Cable The Standard HDMITM cable is designed to STANDARD handle most home applications, and is tested to reliably transmit 1080i or 720p video – the HD resolutions that are commonly associated with cable and satellite television, digital broadcast HD, and upscaling DVD players. Standard HDMI™ Cable with Ethernet This cable type offers the same baseline perSTANDARD formance as the Standard HDMITM Cable shown above (720p or 1080i video resolution), plus an additional, dedicated data channel, known as the HDMITM Ethernet Channel, for device networking. The latest version of the HDMITM standard establishes critical infrastructure for implementing 3D video in the home, defining input/output protocols that will allow 3D displays and source devices to communicate through an HDMITM link. It’s a major milestone on the path to bringing true 3D gaming and 3D home theater to the mass market, supporting resolutions up to 1080p in 3D. 3D technology is evolving rapidly, with several competing approaches under development, so the HDMITM 1.4 specification establishes protocols for a number of popular 3D display methods, including: – Frame, line or field alternative methods – Side by side methods (full and half) – 2-D plus depth methods Additional Color Space
While RGB is still the dominant color space in most video applications, other color models are gaining popularity, particularly in digital still photography. Version 1.4 of the HDMITM specification adds support for three additional color spaces (also known as color gamuts), enabling manufacturers to deliver better and more accurate color to users when they view their digital photos on an HDTV. In addition to RGB color and x.v.Color, the HDMITM standard now offers native support for three additional color spaces: sYCC601 color, Adobe RGB color and Adobe YCC601 color. Like x.v.Color, each of these color spaces defines a palette of available colors that is larger than the traditional RGB color model, and closer to the full range of colors perceptible to the human eye.
The HDMITM Specification Version 1.4 enables simple, automated picture setting selection with no user intervention. The Content Type feature enables a display to auto-select the correct viewing mode to match the content type it is currently receiving from a source device, and to switch modes when a new content source is selected. Content Type supports content profiles for gaming, movie, photograph, and text viewing modes. 4K Support
HIGH SPEED HDMI™ cable with ETHERNET The High Speed HDMITM Cable with Ethernet from the in-akustik Reference series has an additional data channel (Ethernet channel) and enables AV components, such as AV or media receivers etc, to be linked up to the Internet without the need of extra network cable. Using the Audio Return Channel, audio signals can be sent back to the AV receiver, for instance if the TV has a built in tuner. The audio track can be transmitted directly via the HDMITM cable to the receiver without a separate audio cable. Additional features, such as extra large conductor diameter or silver-plated and solid data lines, ensure optimum picture quality even for cable lengths of 20 metres. A connection which is also able to transmit even the highest data rates accurately and securely. It is licensed by the official HDMITM organisation and displays the genuine HDMITM logo.
FULL HD|HDTV 2160p
Full HD and 4K x 2K video describes the resolution capability of the individual components, such as LCD, LED-TV, DVD- or Blu-ray player. The original PAL standard works with just about 576 lines. Devices labelled as Full HD must show a resolution of at least 1920 x 1080 pixels. 4K x 2K describes a four-times higher resolution of 4096 x 2160 pixels. Furthermore, they must be able to handle the progressive display (2160p), which is shown by the “p”. This means that the entire picture content can be displayed in one picture on the screen. The advantage is the improved picture sharpness. Full HD is a furt her development of HD Ready.

The High Speed HDMITM cable from the in-akustik Excellence series transmits digital picture and sound signals from high resolution media to the television or projector in high-end quality. It supports all HD audio formats and a resolution of up to 2160p (4K). The solid data lines are triple-shielded and silver-plated. The contacts are gold-plated for transmissions without interference. The cable is available with lengths from 0.75 to 15 metres.

Gold-plated contacts ensure an optimum digital transmission. It is suitable for connecting digital AV components, such as DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray players or game consoles with a plasma, LCD, LED-TV or projector. High Speed HDMI™ Cable 180°: Some LCD, LED-TVs or plasmas have the HDMI™ inputs on the back. This rules out mounting the TV directly on the wall. The Premium HDMI™ cable with plugs that can be rotated 180° solves the problem.

This enables simultaneous playback from one HDMITM source, such as on a TV or projector. It can be operated directly on the device or by using the efficient remote control and is supported by the LED display.
The compact Premium HDMITM switch box 3->1 high speed has three inputs. One of them is on the front. This enables mobile devices or game consoles to be connected quickly and easily. The automatic function detects which source was the last to be activated and switches to the input. The restriction here to three inputs and a compact plastic housing makes it a cost-effective alternative.

Solid conductor – In standard audio and video cables, the many fine wires are bundled, meaning the electrons can “jump” from one wire to another. The signals travel for different lengths of time, fast impulses are “braked”. Solid conductors prevent this by providing the same transit times and clear, strong contours. Solid conductors also provide another benefit for digital and video quality: the smooth surface allows the impedance to be precisely adjusted and the high signal frequencies which mainly move on the surface of the conductor can be transmitted perfectly. OFC Copper – The transmission of picture and sound signals is highly complex and susceptible to interference. Any contamination in the conductor material prevents the flow of current, impairing the conductance and increasing the background noise. Therefore, we only use especially pure-grade, oxygen-free copper (OFC) with a high conductance. PE Network Jacket – While many cables with an extra PVC coating have an unfavourable impact on the electrical parameters, the strands in the Reference cable are braided directly with the PE network jacket. The cables are comprised of just two materials, despite their sophisticated design: copper and polyethylene. The PE network jacket keeps the strands together, reduces micro-vibrations and enables the clean conversion of extreme dynamic peaks.

Capacitance – Electrical capacitance is the extent to which it is able to store electrical charges. However, cables should be able to transmit the maximum energy of a signal without temporarily storing. The less capacitance a cable has, the better.

Jitter – When serially transmitting A/V data, “one” and “zero” are coded by different impulse durations. Cable properties are affected by these impulse durations so that the data is not received properly. In the case of serious jitter, the D/A converter has to frequently correct the error and consequently the quality of playback for pictures and sound suffers.

CABLE ABC Screening – Cables are shielded with one or more layers (for example wire mesh and a aluminium-coated Mylar film) to protect against electromagnetic interference. The impact of the screening is measured in dB and describes the reduction of any interference. Concentric Copper (CC) – CC stands for the concentric copper wires in a preciselydefined arrangement, as opposed to a chaotic arrangement of strangle wires. This results in a homogeneous signal flow and more precise and detailed sound. Duo-PE II INsolation – In theory, air is the best insulator, in practice polyethylene is the best. For the Reference cable, in-akustik has developed insulation which has two layers of polyethylene. The first layer is foamed with air. Then there is a second solid PE coating over that. This DUO-PE II insulation prevents high capacities and eases the work of the source. Finely-stranded – Many individual wires are twisted into a braid to make the cable more flexible. The sum of the individual wires makes the total cross-section. The thinner the wires, the more flexible the cable. Inductance – Each conductor that is flowed through forms a magnetic field around it. If the flow of current changes, the strength of the magnetic field also changes. This in turn results in an inductive current which counteracts the change of current in the conductor. A frequency-dependent resistance develops (also called inductive reactance) which has a negative impact on the transmission. Special designs reduce the inductivity of a cable. Insulation (dielectric) – The conductors are covered in a non-conductive material to protect against short circuits, corrosion and damage. As these materials still store electrical energy (capacitance), which is not desirable for audio and video cables, in addition to the DUO PE II insulation, in-akustik has developed the first and only excellent Atmos Air Speaker cable with the best insulation of all: air.
