South Wales Police Implement Wireless Headset System South Wales Police cover an area of around 812 square miles, which is home to over 1.25 million people, around 42% of Wales’ population. There are three main control rooms based at police stations in Bridgend, Swansea and Cardiff that cover the whole of South Wales. “We’re delighted with Plantronics’ CS60 wireless headset system in our control room. The new headset system has improved the ability of our supervisors to communicate with staff and the critical incident manager. We can now handle a large number of incidents more efficiently to ensure the safety of the public and our police officers.” Chris Symons, Performance Review Officer, Communications Division, South Wales Police Up until recently, only Bridgend’s control room had a critical incident manager and it was here that South Wales Police required a headset solution that would enable supervisors to communicate more efficiently with control room operatives and the critical incident manager during a shift. At Bridgend’s control room at any one time there are approximately 14 control room operatives, a supervisor and the critical incident manager (the area control room inspector). Control room staff receive emergency 999 calls in addition to incoming, less urgent calls from members of the public and direct police resources to incidents requiring a police response. As well as managing all aspects of the control room, one of the main responsibilities of the supervisor is to liaise with the critical incident manager – who is based in an office outside the control room – to provide regular updates on critical incidents. South Wales Police wanted to make the process of updating the critical incident manager, and communicating with colleagues during stressful periods, more efficient. It wanted to implement a solution that would: Mobilise supervisors in the control room – allowing supervisors to continue phone conversations or maintain the monitoring of radio channels when away from their desk Maintain contact with important/critical calls while bringing them to the attention of critical incident manager Integrate seamlessly with its existing communications infrastructure Allow supervisors to support control room operatives at close quarters during stressful periods whilst still being able to monitor a call Customer Profile: South Wales Police Website: www.south-wales.police.uk Industry: Emergency Services Plantronics Headset Solution: CS60 Wireless Headset System Region: UK At a Glance: South Wales Police covers an area of around 812 square miles, which is home to over 1.25 million people, around 42% of Wales’ population. Key Benefits Improved the ability of supervisors to communicate with control room operatives and with the critical incident manager Greater accuracy and fewer errors have been achieved through using a wireless headset, which has reduced the time it takes control room supervisors to report critical incidents Improves and streamlines communication for supervisors The CS60 headset is designed to be worn all day and is more comfortable than the wired headsets supervisors were previously using South Wales Police will be implementing Plantronics’ CS60 wireless headset system in the control rooms at Cardiff and Swansea after the success of the implementation at Bridgend police station Act CS60, at a Glance: The stylish CS60 wireless headset system provides hands-free convenience for your office phone. It offers the best range and sound quality for the most effective way to use your phone whilst away from your desk. Solution South Wales Police approached Plantronics, the world’s leading provider of communications headsets, for a solution to enhance the efficiency of its operations in the control room at Bridgend. First, South Wales Police identified its key needs. Mobility was considered crucial in ensuring that supervisors report critical incidents to the critical incident manager more efficiently. Supervisors also need to be able to support control room operatives during stressful periods. South Wales Police were given a trial of Plantronics’ CS60 wireless headset system. The CS60 wireless headset system allows you to move up to 100m from your desk while remaining on the phone. It consists of a convertible headset and base unit, which connects to the handset port of the phone system. The base provides the DECT link to the headset as well as the battery charging and headset holder. The battery and electronics are fully integrated into the lightweight convertible headset making the system truly wireless as well as providing 9 hours of talk-time. Users can also take calls away from their desk using the handset lifter – the IntelliStand™ feature senses when the headset has been removed from the base automatically lifting the handset and directs calls into the headset. DECT is a secure technology, so calls cannot be overheard. The solution went live in June 2005 and supervisors in the control room at Bridgend can now: Update the critical incident manager without the inconvenience of having to take off or unplug a wired headset Continue phone conversations as they locate information or consult with colleagues during stressful periods Handle a large number of incidents more efficiently to ensure the safety of police officers and the public Designed for office professionals, the headset can be converted into any one of three headset wearing styles: over the ear, headband or our unique neckband design. And, with our IntelliStandTM feature, using a headset is now as simple as picking up the telephone handset. Sound InnovationTM for missions to the moon. And for everyday life on this planet, too.
