Introduction Spectrum Power Management Systems is a well-respected manufacturer of power strips, power distribution units, and circuit protection systems for both AC and DC power applications. We have developed products as an OEM/ODM Global partner to the industry’s top names. SpecPower® has utilized the best of the OEM/ODM features to create a line of off-the-shelf (OTS) products which encompasses our AC Power Strips, AC and DC SMARTStart® Power Distribution Units, and a variety of specialty solutions. Our portfolio of AC Power Strips and and Specialty Solutions is created with the intent to offer a wide variety of options into a compact package that provides the client with many choices from which to choose the best configuration for the application. AC products are available with the choice of power monitoring (inclusive of visual display) or without monitoring. The monitoring feature provides for real time tracking of appliance power at the device. The monitoring includes a network interface to provide Telnet, SNMP, WEB or Serial RS232 remote power monitoring. Monitoring devices are becoming the industry preferred manner of getting closer to the actual cabinet and clearly knowing the health of the data center. The unmonitored units are an economical means to distribute bulk power to multiple appliances in a cabinet installation, while also providing reliable circuit protection. All of our products carry the UL/CE mark. The power distribution units are listed to UL60950-1, and circuit breakers are listed to UL489. UL489-listed circuit breakers are mandatory for use as primary branch disconnect protection. The use of circuit protection is truly valuable in most system installations to avoid the possibility of catastrophic system faults. Choosing the wrong type of circuit protection fuses or underrated circuit protection can result in major expenses that far exceed choosing the right power distribution solution. Thank you for your interest in Spectrum Power Management Systems. We believe our portfolio of AC Power Strips and Specialty Solutions will provide you the information needed to choose the best power distribution solution. If you find a product that needs to be tailored to fully accommodate your needs, we specialize in customized power distribution solutions. What to Consider Before Selecting a Power Distribution Solution
What are you powering? The number of devices needing power and the associated input cords determine the amount and types of outlets you need. Then, you must determine how much power must be supplied. We have a portfolio of products that provide anywhere from 2.40 to 22.08 KVA. For help determining the number of units required for your rack, refer to the table on page 7. Please carefully consider the loading characteristics of the application and the power capability of the actual site installation. It is most important that if selecting a 30 Amp single phase power strip, the power drop to the cabinet is indeed capable of handling such a load, and the same applies if you choose several power strips for such an installation.
How much space is available? Do you have available “U” Space, or are you looking for a vertical solution? Spectrum Power Management Systems offers 0U, 1U, and 2U products to support a variety of power distribution needs. We know how important rack space is and, therefore, strive to provide the most power possible in the smallest package. You can get up to 24 outlets in a compact, 33” 0U design!
What are your future expectations? Obviously, it is important to first consider what your present power needs are. However, it is also very important to think about what you may require in the future. Power requirements in data centers continue to grow. Therefore, it is best to choose scalable and flexible solutions that are able to grow with the increasing network demands. Although you might not currently need a high power output, you might consider selecting a power strip with a slightly higher output to prepare for your growing needs. The same applies to voltage. Also keep in mind that you should never load a PDU to its maximum to help prevent possible overload. Also ensure that the “upstream” breakers are sufficiently rated to match the total maximum rating of the PDU.

Considerations for the Use of 3 Phase Wiring Why are data centers compelled to use 3 Phase at the cabinet? Minimizing the number of wires under the elevated flooring is a good practice to improve air flow and provide a great deal more clarity to the electricians. A significantly reduced amount of wiring can be attained when using a 3 Phase Wye (5 Wire System) versus the supposed equivalent of Single Phase wiring. An electrician would actually be required to run 3 individual 3 conductor cables compared to a single 5 conductor 3 Phase Wye cable. Benefits of 3 Phase Wiring: • •
Reduced material and installation (Labor) costs Balanced loads on a single circuit versus the use of 3 individual single phase circuits
3 Phase WYE (Y) A 3 Phase-Wye connected system consists of three hot lines, or phases, commonly referred to as X, Y, Z, a neutral, and a ground wire for a total of five wires in a power distribution cable. In North America the most common 3 Phase-Y voltages are either 120/208 VAC or 277/480 VAC, while internationally the most common 3 Phase voltage is 230/400 VAC. The lower voltage in each case is the country’s standard utilization voltage and is measured Lineto-Neutral, while the higher voltage is measured Line-to-Line. The Line-to-Line voltage is always 1.732 times higher than the Line-to-Neutral voltage in a Wye configured 3 Phase system. The line current supplied to the load is also the same as the phase current. It is important to note that when all three “Hot” phases of the system are loaded equally, the net current draw in the neutral line is zero!

3 Phase Delta (∆) A 3 Phase-Delta connected system consists of three hot lines, commonly referred to as X,Y, Z, and a ground wire for a total of four wires in a power distribution cable. In North America the most common 3 Phase-∆ voltages are either 208VAC or 240VAC, while internationally the most common 3 Phase voltage is 230 VAC. These phase voltages are measured Line-to-Line and are typically the country’s standard utilization voltage. Since there is no neutral line in a Delta-connected system, there is no Line-to-Neutral voltage! However, the line current in a Delta-connected system is 1.732 times the phase current supplied to the load(s). Proper care must be taken to correctly size cables in a Delta system because the line currents are much higher than the load (or phase) currents. Delta systems typically have lower line voltages but higher line currents than Wye-connected systems.

Flexibility
Our portfolio of AC Power Strips & Specialty Solutions includes a variety of power inputs and outputs which allows you to mix and match components to accommodate most power distribution needs. Both NEMA and IEC receptacles and plugs are utilized. Monitored and unmonitored versions are available. Unmonitored devices are a reliable cost-efficient means to basic power distribution. Monitored units, in addition to the same features as the standard devices, provide an excellent visual indication of the load in a data center cabinet. Both styles are perfect for a variety of environments.
Power
Whether you require basic power output or high power output, we have a solution to fit your needs! Output power capabilities range from 2.40 to 22.08 KVA. For easy product selection, we have categorized our products into four groups based on power output: Basic Power, Intermediate Power, High Power, and Enforcer Power. Basic Power Strips provide up to 5 kW of power. Intermediate Power Strips range from 5 - 10 kW. Enforcer Power Strips provide up to 25 kW of power.
Compact 0U, 1U, and 2U Designs
We know how important your rack space is. That’s why we strive to produce high-quality power solutions in a compact size, leaving valuable “U” space for other network-critical devices. This also allows the power sockets to be placed close to the equipment being powered, reducing the nuisance of cable clutter. The dominant focus of this brochure is towards 0U products, but 1U and 2U products are manufactured and supported. Please see available products in this brochure or call Spectrum Power Management Systems at 814-272-SPMS.
Circuit Protection
All circuit protected power devices use UL 489-listed circuit breakers to manually control on/off operation for groups of receptacles. No fuses are used which allows the unit to return to service quickly and easily. For easy power-on indication, each circuit breaker features an LED power-on indicator, and each circuit is clearly labeled to help simplify load balancing.
Standard Warranty
Under normal use and specified operation conditions, all power units are warranted from the day of delivery for a period of one year. During this period, if the product should fail, contact the factory or point of purchase for an RMA and instructions on the return procedure. Additionally, RMA instructions and support can be found online at www.specpower.com

Specialty AC Power Solutions
Remote/Local Power Management System The AC SMARTStart® is a multifunctional AC power distribution unit designed to control eight AC loads and monitor vital parameters. This product is available in 15 Amp, 16 Amp, and 20 Amp total load capacity models. In addition, we offer output configurations that use screw clamp terminal blocks, in lieu of IEC or NEMA connectors, for industrial applications. All models have the ability to power-on or power-off any or all loads in any sequence over a wide range of time intervals. The PDU automatically sequences each output. This significantly reduces the total inrush current and limits the possibility of equipment damage due to the combined turn-on transient of several loads. The sequence order and delay is user defined at setup.
A circuit breaker at the AC input provides overall protection. To prevent the circuit breaker from tripping during power up, the PDU features a power-on current limit. The AC SMARTStart® is also capable of monitoring input line voltage and total load current, as well as line frequency. Operation/control is accomplished either manually, using controls on the front panel of the unit, or remotely, using a computing device that utilizes EIA RS-232 and RS485/422 communications such as a laptop computer, desktop computer, or other personal electronic device. Two user programmable external contacts can be configured to alert the user of under-voltage, over-current, or over-temperature conditions using the dry contact closure. These contacts allow remote operation and control from Web browser or Telnet interface.

Further information can be obtained from the product data sheets, which can be obtained from Spectrum Power Management Systems.
•
Circuits should be sized according to local and national codes.
•
If you are using a 200/250 VAC power source in North America, the circuit must be protected by a two-pole circuit breaker or single pole breaker if properly configured for International wiring.
•
The source AC outlet must be within 6 feet (1.8 meters) of the system and should be easily accessible.
•
This Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is constructed and approved in accordance with the safety requirements of IEC/EN60950, and UL 508, and FCC emission standards.
•
Before any installation, maintenance or modification work, ensure that the power source is switched off, and properly secured to remain off. Touching any live components or improper handling of this PDU can result in death, severe personal injury or substantial damage to property. Safe operation is dependent on proper storage, handling, installation and operation.
•
Compliance with the relevant national regulations in the USA, Europe, or other countries must be ensured. Before operation is started, the following conditions must be observed: ■
Connections to mains supply in compliance with national regulations (NEC, NEMA, VDE0100 and EN50178).
■
Use of stranded wires; all strands must be fastened in the terminal blocks (Potential danger of contact with the enclosure).
■
Power supply and mains cables must be sufficiently fused.
■
Degree of protection I to IEC536. The non-fused protective earth connection must be connected to the Field Ground Terminal.
■
All output wires must be rated for the output current of the PDU and must be connected with the correct polarity.
Never work on the PDU if power is applied! Risk of electric shock, which can cause death, severe personal injury or substantial property damage.
Installation 1.
This PDU is designed for Military, Commercial, or Industrial indoor systems horizontal mounting into a standard EIA 19” equipment rack. It is attached to the vertical rails with 10-32 screws, and tightened to 30 in-lb (3.4 N•m).
WARNING WARNING! Failure to properly ground this PDU by not tightening the rack screw fasteners or fully insert the PEM into the equipment rack can create a hazardous condition to the installer and to the equipment. 2.

SMART Start® & Power Monitoring Unit
The DC SMARTStart® is a -48, +12, or +24/+28 VDC power distribution and circuit protection unit designed to reliably cycle power to devices with DC power supplies. The DC SMARTStart® has specialized electronic switchable solid state breakers to provide a true remote power cycling capability. To minimize the downtime, this PDU family has a breaker auto reset function. The on-board computer will pole the tripped channel position to determine whether there is indeed a fault, such as a short circuit. If this condition is determined to be non catastrophic, the breaker is reset. The client is able to disable this feature if desired. The unit also features integral circuitry to provide LVD and OVD protection automatically.
LAN TCP/IP socket or telnet session. The DC SMARTStart® is the ideal DC power distribution and circuit protection solution for Unmanned Vehicles, Command Post Platforms, Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs), Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILECs), XDSL applications, CATV enterprises, and blade servers.
The DC SMARTStart® PDU will permit the network operator the ability to power cycle all 12 solid state breakers as well as the 2 ROCB mains breakers. Refer to the Ordering Information table for respective trip currents. The SMARTStart® PDU features a visual basic (VB) Interface to program the power up/ down sequence and power up/down delays for each channel, along with the LVD and OVD thresholds. There are numerous remote operated circuit breaker values available (see table) that provide primary current protection to the PDU and down stream equipment controlled by the PDU. The ROCBs are UL listed primary circuit protection to the six outputs on side A and B. Our newest high current, direct feed version provides easy power cycling to 48VDC powered routers/ switches, DSLAMS and other enterprise-related equipment via remote activated circuit breakers rated up to 100 Amps. The DC SMARTStart® PDU is capable of monitoring line voltage, circuit breaker status and internal temperature to provide the required power and circuit protection to connected equipment. Operational control is performed either manually by front panel push buttons or remotely through either an RS-232 serial console port 10/100 BASE-T or

Quality Assurance Spectrum Power Management Systems tests all power strips and power distribution systems for conformance to all applicable functional standards. In order to provide the most accurate and specific testing procedures, our engineering staff has developed custom and automated test equipment that is positioned at critical points in our manufacturing operation. We administer our test procedures not only for prototypes, but for each and every power product we manufacture. This focus on quality and reliability is part of the commitment we make to our customers. Dependent on application, SPMS can tailor additional tests to provide verification for unique application environments. The compliance tests performed are described below.
Ground Bond Test
Circuit Breaker Trip Curve
Checks for proper continuity through the chassis ground circuit by applying high current and measuring the ground resistance via kelvin connection.
Voltage Drop Test Checks for excessive resistance of the wire paths in the PDU from the individual pins on the input plug to each of the outlet receptacles. This test is performed at full load. It also verifies the proper termination of each power output receptacle.
High Pot Test Checks for electrical isolation from a hot circuit at high voltage to ground.
Overload Test Checks the circuit breaker reaction (trip curve) by applying a high load to the power strip.
