Give & Gain Day 2013 – Sport Explorers Pack
Introduction ‘Sports Explorers’ is a supplement that may be incorporated into any team challenge to provide employee volunteers with an opportunity to engage with students or young community service users. Within this pack are numerous activities that may be done as 0.2-1 hour sessions as a part of a visit to a school or community group. The activities are fun to do and enable both the volunteers and community group to have a more rewarding experience through their shared adventure. The aim of each ‘Sports Explorers’ activity is to demonstrate the importance of sports and games in light of the Olympics and more importantly, improve students’ familiarity with their natural surroundings, linking them to the second theme of Give & Gain Day 2012 – the environment. These activities demonstrate that sports and games don’t always have to be serious, strenuous and competitive, but can be fun and engaging and provide an avenue to learn things about your surroundings that you wouldn’t normally notice. There is a particular need to raise awareness amongst young people with regards to the environment and highlight the ‘fun’ factor in without the pressure of competitiveness and having to win. Fun activities are great for encouraging children’s imaginations and their interest in their surroundings. Employee volunteers will be helping children to open their minds, see a lighter side to sports and the environment, and learning a whole lot themselves along the way.
Activity 1 – Land & Sea 3

Procedure:
4
Draw a large circle on the floor or create a division of the area with a piece of material. The inside of the circle is the sea and the outside is land. (If the division is being made by a piece of material, one is land and one is sea.) All the kids stand on the land. When the entertainer says sea, all the kids have to jump inside the circle (or the designated sea area). When the entertainer says land, all the kids have to jump out of the circle. If the entertainer says sea, and they are already in the sea, they have to stay where they are. A child who makes a mistake is disqualified and is out of the game. The last one standing is the winner.

Activity 2 – Parachute Description: Fun for kids of all ages, this game involves a large round parachute, preferably with handles, with people holding the parachute all around the edges. It helps if someone is in charge telling people what to do. Players can just ruffle the parachute up and down a little bit, they can go all the way up and all the way down, or all the way up and then run underneath, sitting on the edge of the parachute, which can create a bubble of air with everyone inside. Players can also place light objects such as wiffle balls or beanbags on top of the parachute, and make them jump by ruffling the parachute. Also, one person can sit in the middle of the parachute and everyone ruffles it near the ground. If there is a smooth floor and a light child, the child can sit in the middle on top of the parachute and everyone else can walk partway around still holding the parachute edge. Then everyone pulls backward, spinning the child. There are countless variations.
Number of Players: Depends on the size of the parachute, but usually eight to ten Resources/Materials: A play parachute; These aren’t as hard to find as you would think.

Activity 3 – Freeze Dance Description: Choose one person to be in charge of the music. When the music starts, everyone else dances, the crazier the better. When the music stops, the dancers must freeze in their position. Anyone caught moving after that is out. Play continues until there is one person left, the winner.
Number of Players Any number Resources/Materials: Music player or person making music

Activity 6 – Balloon Sandwich Description: This race, a feat of cooperation, works on the premise that two backs are better than one. Resources/Materials: Balloons Procedure: Begin by choosing partners and lining them up back to back at a starting line. Place a balloon (not a helium one) between their backs so that they must hold it there
and not let it fall to the ground (emphasize no hands!). At the sound of a whistle, the pairs must take off in this position, shuffling their way
toward a finish line. If the balloon pops or drops, they must return to the starting line for a replacement. The first sandwich to cross the line wins.

Activity 7 – Elbow Tag Description: The quirky rules for this fast-moving version of tag allow players to participate or "grab an elbow" to catch their breath. Resources/Materials: No materials required Procedure:
9
Divide the group into pairs. Have partners link elbows and stand in a very large circle, leaving at least 10 feet between each pair. Now designate one player as "It" and choose another player as the one being pursued. If “It” can tag the other player, he/she becomes the new "It." However, to escape or take a rest from running, the other player simply needs to run toward one of the standing couples and links elbows with one of the pair to make a threesome. In this game, two is company but three is a crowd: When the runner latches on, the one member of the pair whose arm she did not take must break away at top speed. This player instantly becomes new prey for "It" -- until he dashes to yet another pair for safety. The confusing transitions can provide a break for weary runners and give even a slow-moving "It" a chance to catch his prey.

Activity 8 – Save the King Description: This friendlier version of Dodgeball features softer, no-sting balls and a team strategy that gets players to work together Resources/Materials: Soft playground balls or foam balls and chalk or something else to demarcate the play area Procedure:
10
Draw the playing area by demarcating four parallel lines across the playground. Create 2 outer spaces 5 feet deep and, between them, a 10-foot-long section of noman's land, a safe zone. Divide the players into 2 teams and give each a ball. The rules here are like those for regular Dodgeball, but before play begins, each team designates 1 player as their king. At "Go," players begin throwing the balls at the opposing team. If a player is hit by a ball, he's out; if he catches one, the thrower is out. The ball is neutral, so it can be used as a shield to block throws. And here's the kicker: if a king gets hit, his entire team loses! Players can enter the designated No Man's Land area to get balls, but you can't throw -- or be hit -- in here.
