The warranty period for the mainframe is two years and begins on the date of purchase. Parts, accessories, product repairs and services are warranted for 90 days, unless otherwise stated. Ni-Cad, Ni-MH and Li-Ion batteries, cables or other peripherals are all considered parts or accessories. The warranty extends only to the original buyer or end user customer of a Fluke Networks authorized reseller, and does not apply to any product which, in Fluke Networks’ opinion, has been misused, abused, altered, neglected, contaminated, or damaged by accident or abnormal conditions of operation or handling. Fluke Networks warrants that software will operate substantially in accordance with its functional specifications for 90 days and that it has been properly recorded on non-defective media. Further, it is assumed that switch configuration will take place at a central location using Fluke Networks MANAgents software for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP following the procedure outline in the Fluke Networks MANAgents software guide. AUDIENCE This hardware guide is written for the person who must install and connect a STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap. The installer is assumed to be familiar with Windows9x/NT/2000/XP, knows how networks operate, and has operating knowledge of network appliances used in network analyzing configurations. This hardware guide was written to help you get to know your new STAP-BT-4X16 quickly and easily. We would welcome any comments or suggestions you may have regarding this hardware guide. 2 Introduction Like many network managers, you know how critical your copper networks are to your network strategy’s success. Your network’s copper links carry high volume traffic and are absolutely pivotal to your network’s performance. With the Fluke Networks STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap, you can now handle network issues remotely and seamlessly without making a visit to the site. The Copper SPAN Tap provides access for meeting whatever monitoring or analysis requirements you may have. It also allows the sharing of network tools between copper segments. Your tools can be quickly and effectively deployed to the point of failure, expanding visibility to the farthest reaches of your copper networks. 3 Hardware Installation CONNECTION INSTRUCTIONS The typical installation described here is for a Fluke Networks STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap with a network appliance. The installation for a STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap corresponds to the connectivity diagram as shown in Figure 1. These reference the same ports and can be used interchangeably. 4 Protocol Analyzer Hardware Installation CONNECTION INSTRUCTIONS continued NOTE Two 100–240V AC, 50–60Hz power sources are included. Use of the second power source is strongly recommended to ensure uninterrupted monitoring. 1. Two internal power supplies are included. Connect each power supply to separate external power sources to ensure uninterrupted monitoring and to eliminate power loss as a cause of failure. Connect both AC power cables to the IEC 320 inlet connectors located on the rear of the STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap. The POWER 1 and POWER 2 LEDs will illuminate, indicating that both power 1 and 2, respectively, are on. Having either LED failing to illuminate indicates a defective power source; replace immediately to ensure redundant power integrity. IMPORTANT Do not exceed the maximum length of 100 meters between end-points. 2. Connect one of the network cables from the SPAN port on each network appliance to the desired STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap RJ45 NETWORK port connector. These RJ45 ports feature integrated LEDs that display the connection status and speed for each port. The NETWORK port LED will illuminate, indicating that link has been established between the NETWORK port connector and network appliance SPAN port. Refer to LED Display Codes on page 9 for connection status information. NOTE The monitor tool must match the selected network speed and duplex. 3. Connect the TAP A RJ45 port on the Copper SPAN Tap to the network appliance’s Network Interface Card (NIC) port connector using a CAT 5E cable. The TAP A port link LED will illuminate, indicating link has been established between both devices. Connect the TAP B , TAP C and TAP D connectors to other network devices as needed, using additional CAT 5E cables. Use the port link LEDs to verify that all links are properly established between each of these connected devices. 4. Using a CAT 5E cable, connect the MANAGEMENT port of the STAP-BT-4X16 to the network for remote console control. Alternately, connect the USB CONTROL port of the STAP-BT-4X16 to a local host control console using the proprietary USB-to-DB9F (DRL470-6-6-6-6) quad-control cable. 5. After completing the hardware installation, the MANAgents switch control software must be installed and configured on the management console used with your Copper SPAN Tap. Please refer to the MANAgents software guide for details. 5 Hardware Installation DISPLAY DETAIL The system firmware built into the Copper SPAN Tap indicates version information and functionality indication for the STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap. The typical display screens described below are associated with the Copper SPAN Tap: Figure 2. Connect the two AC power cords into the inlet connectors on the back panel of the Copper SPAN Tap; then plug both power supplies into external power source wall receptacles on separate circuits. Shortly after powering up, an initialization message (i.e., “loading”) will be displayed. Figure 3. Next, the FLUKE Networks logo will illuminate the display, indicating successful initialization. Figure 4. Once initialization sequence is complete, the display will indicate the online status for each of the four TAP ports. 6 Specifications This WARNING symbol indicates that the fluorescent display module contains a high voltage source (70V DC). Display module capacitors store energy and require more than one minute of discharge time to avoid personal injury or equipment damage. Handle the display module with caution when power is applied. The STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap has been provided with two external power supplies requiring 100–240V AC at 50–60Hz. These supplies are equipped with two AC power connectors. The current output rating is 1.5A. The power supply has been certified by UL, CUL, and TUV and is CE approved. (1m typical length for network tools, up to 100m) 7 Panel Description FRONT PANEL The front panel of the STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap is illustrated in Figure 5. The front panel features a scrolling blue vacuum fluorescent display that denotes the model (“STAP-BT-4X16”), connection status, power indication and operating status information for the Copper SPAN Tap. Figure 5. STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap unit front panel and display POWER 1 AND POWER 2 Capacity for two power sources is integrated into the Copper SPAN Tap. It is strongly recommended that external sourcing for each power supply originates from separate and independent electrical circuits. This strategy will strongly reduce the risk of Tap operation being interrupted. Once connected, the POWER 1 and POWER 2 LEDs will illuminate, indicating that both power sources are active. If either LED fails to illuminate, then there is a defective power source; immediate replacement is required to ensure redundant power integrity. MANAGEMENT PORT This RJ45 port is used for remote switch control of the Copper SPAN Tap through a network. The port features integrated LEDs that displays connection and activity status. The LED Display Codes table on page 9 provides more details. CONTROL This USB port is used to connect to the 9-pin COM port on a host computer for local control — either in a standalone Copper SPAN Tap switch configuration, or as the first Copper SPAN Tap switch in a daisy-chain configuration. In a daisy-chained scenario, the CONTROL port of the primary (or preceding) Copper SPAN Tap is directly connected to the LINK port on the subsequent Copper SPAN Tap in the daisy-chain. This port is also used to set device IP address and to update firmware on the Copper SPAN Tap. LINK This USB port is used to connect to the CONTROL port on a preceding Copper SPAN Tap in a daisy-chain configuration. 8 Panel Description NETWORK PORTS (1 TO 16) Each RJ45 network port on the Copper SPAN Tap is used to establish connections with either SPAN network devices or in-line taps. DAISY PORTS (A TO D) Each RJ45 daisy port respectively connects to the next-in-sequence STAP-BT-4X16 TAP A, TAP B, TAP C or TAP D port when arranged in a daisy-chain configuration. Each RJ45 DAISY port features integrated LEDs that displays connection and activity status. Refer to LED Display Codes below. IMPORTANT The monitor tool must match the selected network speed and duplex. TAP PORTS (A TO D) Each RJ45 tap port connects to the NIC MONITOR port associated with network tools to be used with the Copper SPAN Tap. The STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap connects the selected NETWORK PORT (1 TO 16) to the TAP A, TAP B, TAP C or TAP D port, but the TAP ports cannot be connected to the same network port simultaneously. Each RJ45 TAP port features integrated LEDs that displays connection and activity status. The LED Display Codes table below provides more details. The Copper SPAN Tap serial number, MAC (media access control) address, and dual power source connectors are located here. Figure 6. STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap unit rear panel IEC 320 INLET CONNECTORS Two 100–240V AC (50–60Hz) power circuit connections allow for redundant power sourcing. It is strongly recommended to connect each power supply to separate external power sources as a means to ensure uninterrupted monitoring and to eliminate power loss as a cause of failure. Once connected, the POWER 1 and POWER 2 LEDs will illuminate, indicating that both power 1 and 2, respectively, are on. Either LED not illuminated indicates a defective power source; replace immediately to ensure redundant power integrity. SN (SERIAL NUMBER) Keep the serial number on file. It identifies the Copper SPAN Tap unit. MAC (MEDIA ACCESS CONTROL) MAC addresses are used to identify devices (nodes) on a network. Each MAC address features six sets of dual hexadecimal values (e.g., 00-11-88-BB-CC-FF) that are uniquely assigned to network devices. 10 Daisy-Chain Addressing DAISY-CHAIN CONFIGURATION Prior to installing in a daisy-chain, the address of each STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap must be set either individually or as a group — as described in the control pull-down menu section of the Fluke Networks MANAgents software guide. Also please note that daisy-chaining capability is limited to four switches. The daisy-chain setup instructions on the following page focuses on the Copper SPAN Tap configuration shown below in Figure 7. Copper SPAN Tap daisy-chain control connectivity diagram 11 Daisy-Chain Addressing To make interconnection between multiple Copper SPAN Taps and individual network device links, follow these steps: 1. Connect the RJ45 SPAN ports from each ethernet switch/network device to one of the sixteen available STAP-BT-4X16 Copper SPAN Tap NETWORK ports using a standard CAT 5E cable. Each outlet features integrated LEDs that display the status of each port. Refer to LED Display Codes on page 9 for connection status information. NOTE The network monitor tool must match the selected network duplex speed. 2. Connect the TAP A port on the first Copper SPAN Tap to the network monitor tool NIC RJ45 port using a CAT 5E cable. The TAP A port link LED will illuminate, indicating a link has been established between both devices. 3. Connect TAP B, TAP C and TAP D ports on the Copper SPAN Tap to other network monitor tools as desired using separate CAT 5E cables. Verify that each link is properly established by monitoring the integrated tap port LEDs. 4. Connect the DAISY A port on the first Copper SPAN Tap to the TAP A port on the next Copper SPAN Tap using a CAT 5E cable. The TAP A port link LED on the next Copper SPAN Tap will illuminate, indicating a link has been established between both Copper SPAN Taps. 5. Connect the DAISY B, DAISY C and DAISY D ports on the first Copper SPAN Tap with the TAP B, TAP C and TAP D ports on the next Copper SPAN Tap, respectively, using CAT 5E cables. 6. For adding a third or fourth Copper SPAN Taps to the daisy-chain assembly, repeat steps 4 and 5 as necessary, connecting the DAISY ports from the last daisy-chained Copper SPAN Tap into the respective TAP ports on the Copper SPAN Tap being added to the daisy-chain configuration. 7. Connect the MANAGEMENT RJ45 port on the first Copper SPAN Tap to the network to enable remote console control. Alternately, connect the CONTROL USB port on the first Copper SPAN Tap to a local host control console with the included USB-to-DB9F (DRL470-6-6-6-6) quad-control cable. 8. Connect the LINK USB port on the first Copper SPAN Tap to the CONTROL port on the next Copper SPAN Tap in the daisy-chain with a USB cable. Repeat this step with any additional Copper SPAN Taps that are added to the daisy-chain configuration. 9. Once the daisy-chain hardware installation is complete, the switch control software must be properly configured or reconfigured for your network environment. Setting the address for each individual Copper SPAN Tap is handled by either configuring one device at a time before the cables are connected, or by daisy-chaining all Copper SPAN Taps to use the built-in autoaddressing capability. Refer to the Fluke Networks MANAgents software guide for more details. 12 Care and Maintenance The Copper SPAN Tap is designed to be maintenance free. Treat it with care to ensure the best performance. The suggestions below will help you fulfill the obligations of the warranty and enjoy the tap for many years. AVOIDING ROUGH HANDLING Although the Copper SPAN Tap can absorb shock and vibration, avoid dropping it. If you must ship the tap, use the original packaging or the ruggedized transit case. CLEANING CAREFULLY To clean the Copper SPAN Tap, use a soft, slightly damp cloth. To remove any stains, use a mild soap. Never use detergents, solvents, or abrasive cleaners on the tap. PROVIDING ADEQUATE VENTILATION Always place the Copper SPAN Tap in an area where there is sufficient space in front and behind the unit to provide adequate ventilation. SAFETY INFORMATION To avoid possible electric shock or personal injury, the following general safety precautions must be observed during all phases of operation, service, or repair of the Copper SPAN Tap. Failure to comply with these precautions or with specific warnings in this guide violates the safety standards of design, manufacture, and intended use of the tap. Fluke Networks assumes no liability for the customer’s failure to comply with these requirements. WARNINGS If this product is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the protections provided by the product may be impaired. Do not use the tap if it is damaged. Before using, inspect the case. Look for cracked or missing case parts. Pay particular attention to the insulation surrounding the connectors. Do not operate the tap around explosive gas, vapor or dust. When servicing the tap, use specified replacement parts only. Do not connect a telephone line to the tap. Provide adequate ventilation in front of and behind the tap. SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENT Service and adjustment of the Copper SPAN Tap should be performed by trained Fluke Networks service personnel only.
