STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 6 Precautions The battery MUST be charged with the AC to DC power adapter and battery charger provided with the STE-1200. Using any other adapter/charger may damage the battery. Do not use the STE-1200 in wet conditions or outside during electrical storms and disconnect all cable if the unit becomes wet. Do not use the STE-1200 in a hazardous location or close to flammable substances. Do not use the STE-1200 in any manner not recommended by the manufacturer. During transport and operation use care when handling, take care to avoid severe impact or vibration that can damage the internal components of the unit. The operation of the STE-1200 may be affected when in a strong electromagnetic field. Do not use chemicals to clean the unit, only use a clean dry cloth to remove dust and dirt. Introduction Overview The STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester is used for the installation and maintenance of closed circuit video monitoring systems. The unit can be used to display video feeds directly from security cameras, control the movement of Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras, generate colorbar test images, capture addressing data from serial control systems, and test LAN cables. These functions along with easy operation and portability makes it simple for a CCTV Technician to install and maintain CCTV systems, improving work efficiency by reducing time in the field. Features The STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester includes the following features: • 3.5 Inch TFT LCD, 960 x 240 Resolution • 12 VDC, 1A power output for camera • Audio input testing • Supports Pan-Tilt-Zoom control for more than twenty PTZ protocols. This feature will command PTZ security cameras to zoom in/out, adjust focus/aperture, and set/call preset positions • Automatically adapts and displays video from NTSC or PAL cameras. • Adjustable LCD Brightness, Contrast, and Color Saturation. • PAL or NTSC multi-system colorbar video generator • Captures and analyzes RS232 and RS485 controlling data • Performs LAN cable testing, measurement of the connection status (straight, cross-over, short, open), and displays the sequence of connection and the address of the connected LAN cable tester. • Supports RS232, RS485 and RS422 testing with a baud rate ranging from 150 to 19,200 bps. • Li-Ion polymer battery which can last up to 12 hours during normal operation with a charge time of only for 4 hours. See below for more detailed information on the meaning of each status indicator. The Battery Charge Indicator will illuminate red when the battery is being charged. When the battery is 90% charged the indicator will automatically turn off. + R The Data Reception Indicator will illuminate red when data is being received via the UTP Test, RS232/RS422, or RS485 ports. T The Data Transmission Indicator will illuminate red when data is being transmitted via the UTP Test, RS232/ RS422, or RS485 ports. The Power Indicator will briefly illuminate green when the device is powered on and will illuminate constantly when the device is connected to an AC power source via the power adapter. Key Pad POWER Press the POWER button for more than two (2) seconds to turn the unit on or off. When the unit is operating in PTZ Controller mode, press and release this button to hide or show the control menu. Continue to press this button to cycle through the operation mode choices on the Main menu. MODE Press the SET button to view and/or change the settings of the current operation mode. This button will allow you to change the settings of the PTZ Controller, Data Monitor, and Address Search modes. SET Focus Control FAR NEAR When in the PTZ Controller mode, the FAR button is used to controls the focus of the camera lens. Use this button to focus on objects in the distance, far away from the camera. When in the PTZ Controller mode, the NEAR button controls the focus of the camera lens. Use this button to focus on objects in the foreground, close to the camera. Zoom Control TELE WIDE When in the PTZ Controller mode, the TELE button controls the zoom of the camera lens to zoom IN. When in the PTZ Controller mode, the WIDE button is used to control the zoom of the camera lens to zoom OUT. Aperature Control Enter OPEN Return CLOSE Press the ENTER-OPEN button to confirm setting changes or when in the PTZ Controller mode use this button to open the lens aperature. Press the RETURN-CLOSE button to cancel setting changes or when in the PTZ Controller mode use this button to close the lens aperature. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 13 Up & Down Buttons When in the PTZ Controller mode, the UP and DOWN buttons control the tilt of the camera lens. Use these buttons to tilt the camera up or down. These buttons are also used to: • Scroll upward or downward through the setup menu options of the PTZ Controller and Address Search modes. • Adjust the value of the highlighted setup option in the Data Monitor mode. Left & Right Buttons When in the PTZ Controller mode, the LEFT and RIGHT buttons control the pan of the camera lens. Use these buttons to pan the camera left or right. This button is also used to adjust the value of the highlighted setup option in the PTZ Controller and Address Search modes. This button decreases (left) or increases (right) numerical setting values or cycles downward (left) or upward (right) through the list of settings. Internal Speaker - Speaker used for testing via the audio input. 2. Audio Input - Mini-jack (1/8” TRS) audio input for testing external audio sources. 3. UTP Test Port - LAN input port used for testing UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cables with the LAN Tester. 2. Reset Button - Press this button to restore default settings to the unit. 3. Power Ouptut - 12 VDC, 1 A power output used to provide power to security cameras when other power sources are not available. 4. Power Input - 5 VDC power input used to charge the internal battery. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 16 Battery Charging Before charging the battery for the first time, it is recommended that you completely exhaust the power of battery. Once the battery power is completely exhausted, then recharge the unit for four (4) to five (5) hours. To charge the included Li-Ion battery, simply plug the AC to DC power adapter into an AC power source and then connect the adapter to the power input of the STE-1200. The Power Indicator will illuminate green when the device is connected to an AC power source via the power adapter. + will illuminate red when the battery is The Battery Charge Indicator being charged. When the battery is 90% charged the indicator will automatically turn off. When the Battery Charge Indicator turns off, the battery is approximately 90% charged. The charging time can be extended for about 1 hour and an extended charging time of up to 8 hours will not damage the battery. If the unit is acting abnormally or after the battery has been replaced or fully discharged, you will need to press the Reset button on the left side of the unit to retore the device to its initial factory settings. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 17 Test Equipment Depot - 800.517.8431 - 99 Washington Street Melrose, MA 02176 TestEquipmentDepot.com Battery Replacement The STE-1200 CCTV Secrity Tester is powered by an AC power adapter and rechargeable Li-Ion battery. The unit uses a 3.7 V, 3000 mAh Li-Ion rechargeable battery mounted in the lower half of the unit enclosure. Although the included rechargeable battery rarely needs replacement under normal usage, it is easily replaced. To replace the battery, perform the following steps. 1. On the lower left side of the unit, remove the battery cover, by depressing the tab at the top of the door and pulling the door outward. 2. Disconnect the battery wiring harness from the unit by gently pulling the wires. 3. Remove the battery by pulling straight out of the unit. If the unit is acting abnormally or after the battery has been replaced or fully discharged, you will need to press the Reset button on the left side of the unit to retore the device to its initial factory settings. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 18 Chapter 3 3. Operation Getting Started Press the POWER button for more than two (2) seconds to turn the STE-1200 unit on or off. Once the unit has turned on, the PTZ Controller menu will appear as shown in the figure to the right. To access any of the operation modes, press the MODE button to view the Main menu. Continue to press this button or the UP and Down arrow buttons to cycle through the operation mode choices on the Main menu. When the STE-1200 is powererd on, it will return to the operation mode that was selected last before the unit was turned off. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 19 Device Settings To adjust your device settings, from the Main menu select the Device Settings menu option. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to cycle through the Device Settings menu and then use the LEFT and RIGHT buttons to change the value of the setup menu options. The following settings can be adjusted: Auto Poweroff: This option will enable the power saving feature of the unit. Select Disable or a 5 to 60 minute delay in 5 minute increments. Prompt Sound: This option will enable or disable the sound that is made by the unit when a button is pressed. Language: This option will allow you to choose between English and Chinese languages. Brightness: This option will allow you to adjust the brightness of the LCD display. Select levels from a minimum of 0 (darkest) to 7 (brightest). Address Search: This option will enable or disable the Address Search feature of the unit. When the Address Search mode is enabled, the PTZ Controller is disabled. Once you have finished making changes, select the accept your changes or select the Return CLOSE Enter OPEN button to button to exit without saving. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 20 Display Settings To adjust the appearance of the display, from the Main menu select the Display Settings menu option. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to cycle through the Display Settings menu and then use the LEFT and RIGHT buttons to change the value of the display settings. The following settings can be adjusted: Brightness: This option will adjust the brightness of the display. Select from -128 to 127 with a default value of 0. Contrast: This option will adjust the contrast of the display. Select from -128 to 127 with a default value of 0. Saturation: This option will adjust the color saturation of the display. Select from -128 to 127 with a default value of 20. Once you have finished making changes, select the accept your changes or select the Return CLOSE Enter OPEN button to button to exit without saving. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 21 Connection Diagram The following diagram shows an example of how the STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester is used to test a CCTV security system. This example shows a typical PTZ camera with video output, PTZ control wiring (RS232/ RS422 or RS485), audio output, and DC power supply. In this example, the security camera is supplied power using the STE-1200 power output. This configuration is common in new installations where power may not be available for testing. In existing installations, the security camera can be powered by the installed power source. In this mode the user can control the pan, tilt, zoom, and focus controls of PTZ security cameras. Within this mode you can also setup the following control parameters; protocol, communications port, baud rate, address, pan/tilt speed, and preset positions. Required Connections Before using the PTZ Controller mode, you must first make the following connections: 1. The video output of the PTZ camera must be connected to the Video In port of the STE-1200. 2. The control cable of the PTZ camera must be connected to the RS232/RS422 or RS485 port of the STE-1200. 3. If using the RS485 port of the STE-1200: • Connect the Data A+ control cable of the PTZ camera to the Data A+ connector of the RS485 port. • Connect the Data B- control cable of the PTZ camera to the Data B- connector of the RS485 port. Do not connect any control cables to the communication ports of the STE-1200 that contain a circuit voltage higher than 6 VDC. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 23 PTZ Communication Settings To control a PTZ security camera you will first need to set the communication settings of the STE-1200 to match the system in which the camera is in operation. At minimum you will need to know the camera control protocol, communication port, communication speed, and address of the camera you wish to control. To control and view video from a security camera, from the Main menu select the PTZ Controller menu option. From the PTZ Controller menu, press the SET button to view and/ or change the settings of the PTZ Controller operation mode. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to cycle through the PTZ Controller Settings menu and then use the LEFT and RIGHT buttons to change the value of the setting. The following settings can be adjusted: Protocol: Select the control protocol of the PTZ camera you wish to control. Port: Select the port that the STE-1200 will use to control the PTZ camera. Baud: Select the data rate that will be used to communicate with the PTZ camera. Address: Enter the address value of the PTZ camera you wish to control. Pan / Tilt Speed: These settings will allow you to select the pan and tilt speed of the PTZ camera you wish to control. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 26 Preset Functions The STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester allows you to save and recall camera presets positions. The preset positions are defined by the pan, tilt, zoom, focus, and aperature settings of the camera when the preset was saved to the camera. Saving Presets Perform the following steps to save a camera preset position: 1. Adjust the PTZ Communication Settings to match the camera that you wish to control. 2. Using the PTZ controls, adjust the camera to the desired pan, tilt, zoom, focus, and aperature setting. 3. From the PTZ Controller menu, press the SET button to view the PTZ Settings menu. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to highlight the Set PS option. 4. Use the LEFT and RIGHT buttons to change the preset position value. 5. Once you have finished making changes, select the Enter OPEN button to accept your changes and return to the PTZ Controller video display screen or select the button to exit without saving. Adjust the PTZ Communication Settings to match the camera that you wish to control. 2. From the PTZ Controller menu, press the SET button to view the PTZ Settings menu. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to highlight the Go PS option. 3. Use the LEFT and RIGHT buttons to change the preset position value. 4. Once you have finished making changes, select the Enter OPEN button to accept your changes and return to the PTZ Controller video display screen or select the button to exit without saving. Return CLOSE 5. The preset position of the camera will now be displayed on the PTZ Controller video display screen. Accessing Funtions of a PTZ Camera Typically PTZ cameras include factory presets to perform advanced configuration of the camera. However, the method and preset address of PTZ cameras vary based on manufacturer and control system. Please consult with the original documentation provided by the system manufacturer for more detailed information. The following is a list of common preset values for some cameras: Preset 33 - Open Auto-Flip Function Preset 34 - Reset Zero Point of PTZ Camera Preset 64 - Enter the Main Menu of the PTZ Camera Preset 95 - Enter the Main Menu of the PTZ Camera or Stop the Pattern Recording Preset 96 - Run Pattern 1 Preset 97 - Run Preset Tour 1 Preset 98 - Run Frame Scan STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 28 Using Camera Power Source The STE-1200 CCTV Cable Tester includes a 12 VDC, 1 A power output for supplying power to security cameras. This configuration is common in new installations where power may not be available for testing. In existing installations, the security camera can be powered by the installed power source. When using the power source, the battery life will be decreased. Be sure to fully charge the battery otherwise testing time may be limited. The output current of the STE-1200 is limited to less than 1 A. If the current draw of the camera is higher than 1 A, the unit will enter into a protective mode. If this happens, simply connect the unit to an AC power source using the included AC to DC power adapter. Never connect any power source to the power output connection of the STE-1200. Otherwise both the unit and power adapter will be damaged. Never connect the power output connection of the STE-1200 to the power input connection of the STE-1200. Otherwise the unit will be damaged. Audio Listening Mode This mode is used to listen to the audio output of a microphone or security camera via the internal speaker of the STE-1200. To listen to an audio source, connect the device to the Audio Input of the STE-1200 using the included alligator clip to mini-jack (1/8” TRS) cable. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 29 Colorbar Generator Mode This mode generates a standard colorbar pattern for testing video monitors, cables, and other display equipment. To use the colorbar generator, from the Main menu select the Colorbar Generator menu option. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to cycle through the colorbar generator settings and then use the LEFT and RIGHT buttons to change the value colorbar generator settings. The following settings can be adjusted: Format: This setting is used to change the colorbar format standard. You can choose from the following formats: PAL - B, D, G, H, I PAL - M PAL - N (Arg.) PAL - N (Non-Arg.) NTSC-M (CCIR601) NTSC-M (Japan) NTSC-M (RS170A) LCD: This setting is used to switch between viewing video from the Video In or Video Out port of the STE-1200. This provides the user with the ability to either view the colorbar generator output signal or the video camera input signal. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 30 Data Monitor Mode This mode is used to capture and analyze RS232 and RS485 control data from external PTZ controllers. From the Main menu select the Data Monitor menu option. STE-1200 CCTV Security Tester - Operation Manual 31 Required Connections Before using the Data Monitor mode, you must first make the following connections: 1. The control cable of the external PTZ controller must be connected to the RS232/RS422 or RS485 port of the STE1200. 2. If using the RS485 port of the STE-1200: • Connect the Data A+ control cable of the external PTZ controller to the Data A+ connector of the RS485 port. • Connect the Data B- control cable of the external PTZ controller to the Data B- connector of the RS485 port. Data Monitor Connection Settings To connect to an external PTZ controller you will first need to adjust the connection settings of the STE-1200 to match the external PTZ controller. At minimum you will need to know the communication port and communication speed. SET From the Data Monitor menu, press the button to toggle between the Data Monitor connection settings and then use the UP or DOWN buttons to change the setting values. The following settings can be adjusted: Port: Select the port that the STE-1200 will use to communicate with the external PTZ controller. This mode is used to search for security cameras within the CCTV system. Within this mode you can adjust the protocol, port, and data rate to match the specification of the connected camera. Required Connections Before using the Address Search mode, you must first make the following connections: 1. The control cable of the PTZ camera must be connected to the RS232/RS422 or RS485 port of the STE-1200. 2. If using the RS485 port of the STE-1200: • Connect the Data A+ control cable of the PTZ camera to the Data A+ connector of the RS485 port. • Connect the Data B- control cable of the PTZ camera to the Data B- connector of the RS485 port. Do not connect any control cables to the communication ports of the STE-1200 that contain a circuit voltage higher than 6 VDC. Once you have found the correct address, the camera will stop rotating. The address displayed on the screen corresponds to the address of the camera that you found. 5. After finding the address of the camera, use the LEFT and RIGHT buttons to adjust the camera back to its original position.
