Steno-cassette compartment, counter reset In Stop position, press the »EJECT« button. – The cover opens slowly and the counter is reset to zero (0). Insert the steno-cassette with its open side and the labelling visible into the steno-cassette compartment. Close the steno-cassette compartment by pressing on its cover until it locks in place. ENGLISH ɟ Recording and control functions on the microphone – ļ – « button. To record: press the »ļ Ł Start to record: move the slide-switch to the » Ł START« position. ̛ To pause during recording: move the slide-switch to the » STOP« position. ̛ ̛ To end a recording: move the slide-switch briefly to the »ĵĵ REW« or »ŁŁ FFWD« position; then to the » STOP« position. ĵĵ Short rewind: move the slide-switch to the »ĵĵ REW« position. ŁŁ Fast forward: move the slide-switch to the »ŁŁ FFWD« position. ĵĵ ̛ Text marks --II --II End-of-letter marks: briefly press the --II button during recording. Index mark: briefly press the --II button during playback. 3 BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS ____________________________________ Storing end-of-letter marks ɟ ĵĵ Insert a recorded steno-cassette that has not been rewound into the tape compartment. If the steno-cassette has not been removed from the compartment since turning the unit on, press the »EJECT« button to open the compartment and then close the compartment by hand. Press the »REWIND« button. Playback ŀ/y ŀ/y ̛/ı ̛/ı To playback using the speaker in the machine: press the »SPEAKER/EAR« button stet (ё). To playback using headset accessories: click the »SPEAKER/EAR« button up (Ծ). Press the »STOP/PLAY« button to start playback.. Press the »STOP/PLAY« button again to stop playback. Use the »BACKSPACE« rotary adjuster in the base of the machine to set the backspace time from + “unlimited” (same as rewind) to – “minimum”. | ɼɦ 4 Use the »SPEED« rotary adjuster in the base of the machine to set the playback speed. The adjuster locks in its middle position (normal speed). When a microphone ist connected, this adjuster has no function. Change the volume using the »VOLUME« adjuster (on the front of the machine). Change the tone using the »TONE« adjuster(on the front of the machine). BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS ____________________________________ Fast forward, rewind, search ĵĵ ̛/ı Fast forward: Press the »FFWD ŁŁ « button on the device. Rewind: Press the »ĵĵ REWIND« button on the device. ENGLISH ŁŁ Stop: press the »STOP/PLAY« button. Search forward: press the »SEARCH/ERASE« button and »FFWD« button together. ̛/ı Search backward: press the »SEARCH/ERASE« button and »REWIND« button together. Abort search: press the »STOP/PLAY« button. Erase Press the »SEARCH/ERASE« button until you hear a beep (approximately 2 seconds) and additionally ĵĵ / ŁŁ press the »REWIND« button or the »FFWD« button. 5 PREPARATION _______________________________________________ Suitable location Do not place the machine on a soft surface (tablecloth, pillow etc.) as this could block the convection vents on the bottom of the unit and result in overheating. Do not cover or insert any objects in the convection vents in the dictation machine's housing. This could destroy the speaker or electronic components. Do not subject the unit to direct sunlight for a prolonged period of time or to temperatures over 95°F/35°C. Furniture is often coated with various types of synthetics and paint that contain chemical additives. These can corrode the material of the machine base and leave marks on the surface of the furniture that may, in rare cases, be very difficult or impossible to remove. 6 PREPARATION _______________________________________________ Mains unit 682 GB connection Warning! The mains unit is designed for use with the Grundig Stenorette St 3220 only. ac 9V-10V~ T CONTROL ac 9V-10V~ To connect the mains unit with the machine: push the connector (telephone type jack) into the socket at the back of the machine marked »ac 9 V-10 V~«. Connect the plug of mains unit “682 GB” to a a.c. 230 V, ˜ 50 Hz - 60 Hz electrical outlet. To disconnect the mains unit from the machine: depress the catch on the connector and simultaneously pull the cord. Turning the machine on and off Ǽ Press the »Ǽ – POWER« button down to turn the machine on and off. – When on, the power light will illuminate. – The following appears in the display: STOP min LETTER Warning! The dictation machine and the mains unit are only disconnected from the supply voltage when the plug has been removed from the power outlet! Always disconnect the power supply unit during an electrical storm. Do not pull it out by the cord. Standby If you do not select a function for more than 10 minutes, the machine switches into “standby mode”. The parts that usually touch the tape are released from the tape. The machine remains in standby mode 7 until reactivated. ENGLISH With mains unit 682 GB PREPARATION _______________________________________________ Connecting accessories Connecting the microphone, 536 foot control, 541 hand control and headset: see figure at the beginning of this booklett. The features indicated by Grundig apply only when using original Grundig accessories. Defects due to the use of accessories which are not original Grundig accessories or which do not comply with the legal regulations or the corresponding standards lead automatically to the expiration of any guarantee rights. INFORMATION DISPLAY ________________________________ Function display DICTATE STOP PLAY ERASE SEARCH min LETTER FFWD REWIND Dictation length in minutes 00.0 – 39.9 letter counter 0 – 19 Note: Throughout the manual: 88.8 means the current dictation length, I8 means the current letter number. 8 RECORDING DICTATIONS ______________________________ Microphone recording sensitivity ENGLISH Select one of the three switch settings on the microphone: ı Private – I Normal – I Conference. Recording distance from microphone (dictation) approximately 10 cm. The machine adjusts automatically to the volume of the dictation when recording. If you speak closely to the microphone, less background noise is recorded. Each new recording automatically erases any previous recordings on that part of the tape. Recording Activating the record function Press the »ļ« button. – The record light on the microphone illuminates. – The following appears in the display: – DICTATE min LETTER Starting to record STOP START Move the slide-switch to the »Ł START « position. REW – The following appears in the display: DICTATE min LETTER – The tape is running. Your dictation is now being recorded. Note: If a signal sounds, the tape has reached its end or no cassette is in the cassette compartment. 9 RECORDING DICTATIONS ______________________________ Repeating short text passages Short rewind START REW Move the slide-switch into the »ĵĵ REW« position. – The tape is briefly rewound. – Then the machine switches back into playback mode. Resuming recording Press the »ļ« button. – Tape end and tape end switch-off After a recording time of 29 minutes, the machine emits a sound signal. At the end of the tape, the machine automatically switches to stop. When operated with a microphone or foot control, a warning signal sounds in addition. Conference recording with the microphone Recording sensitivity Select one of the three switch settings: ı Private – I Normal – I Conference (recommended setting). Place the microphone in the middle of the conference table with the slide-switch facing upward. Place the microphone on a soft surface to reduce the amount of background noise recorded. Then proceed as in “Recording”. 10 TEXT MARKS _________________________________________________ End-of-letter mark The end of a letter can be marked with an end-of-letter mark either during recording or when recording has been paused. ENGLISH Briefly press the left » --II « or right » --II « button. – When releasing the button, an end-of-letter mark will be recorded. – The letter number in the display is increased by 1. The end-of-letter marks will be recognized by all Grundig dictation machines with a search function. See chapter “Search Function”. Index mark Parts of the tape that have to be corrected can be marked with an index mark either during playback or stop. Press the left » --II « or right » --II « button at the required position. The text passages that are to be inserted can be recorded at the end of the dictation; or on another steno-cassette (used as a correction tape). Note: Let the person who will do your typing know what to do when an index mark is heard on the tape. Examples: – insert correction tape – read enclosed index note – call back for consultation. 11 DICTATION COUNT________________________________________ Letter quantity, length and remaining dictation time The end of the letter must be marked during dictation in order to register on the display. Insert a recorded steno-cassette that has not been rewound into the tape compartment. ɟ ĵĵ If the steno-cassette has not been removed from the compartment since turning the unit on, press th »EJECT button and close the compartment manually. – The counter is reset to zero (0). ɟ« Press the »ĵĵ REWIND « button: – The tape rewinds to the beginning. – The end-of-letter marks that were set during dictation are counted and stored. – Index marks are not stored. – The following appears in the display: min LETTER – A maximum 19 letters can be counted. – The machine stops automatically at the beginning of the tape. – The flashing number on the display shows the total dictation time and the number of dictations. min LETTER Switch the machine to » START«. The first letter and the remaining dictation time will appear in the display. The remaining dictation time shown on the display counts backwards. – The second letter and the remaining dictation time are displayed as soon as the first letter is over. – The following appears in the display: PLAY 12 min LETTER Note: When switching the dictation machine on and off, the dictation counter is not automatically reset. If a mains failure occurs, the dictation counter is automatically reset to zero (0). HOW TO USE THE MICROPHONE __________________ To start playback move slide-switch to »Ł START«. – The following appears in the display: PLAY WD STOP START min LETTER ̛ STOP«. To stop playback move slide-switch to » – The following appears in the display: STOP ENGLISH STOP START REW min LETTER Short rewind START REW To repeat short text passages, move the slide-switch to »ĵĵ REW«. – After a short rewind the machine switches to playback. – The following appears in the display: min LETTER REWIND You can alter the short rewind time with the “BACKSPACE” rotary adjuster in the base of the machine. In the “+” position (maximum), the tape is rewound as long as the slide-switch is held in the »ĵĵ REW« position. If the end of a letter is marked you will hear a short beep and the tape will stop briefly. Keep the slide-switch if you wish to continue. Fast forward FFWD STOP Move the slide-switch to »ŁŁ FFWD« to wind the tape in forward direction. If an end mark is recorded, a brief signal sounds and the tape stops briefly. Keep the button pressed to continue fast forward. – The following appears in the display: SEARCH min LETTER FFWD 13 HOW TO USE THE 536 FOOT CONTROL ________ Switch options: right pedal = start middle pedal = fast forward left pedal = short rewind Starting and stopping using the 536 foot control You can use the start pedal (right pedal) to either lock or scan. Slide the switch on the bottom of the machine to the desired position. Lock position: press pedal = start release the pedal and press it again = stop. Scan position: press and hold pedal = start release pedal = stop. Use the “SPEED” rotary adjuster in the base of the machine (St 3220) to change the playback speed. The adjuster locks in its middle position (normal speed). Fast forward and short rewind using the 536 foot control Fast forward Step on the middle pedal of the foot control. – If the end of a letter is marked you will hear a short beep and the tape will stop briefly. Keep the pedal pressed down if you wish to continue fast forwarding. – The following appears in the display: SEARCH min LETTER Short rewind Step on the left pedal of the foot control. – After a short rewind the machine switches to playback. – The following appears in the display: min LETTER 14 FFWD SEARCH REWIND HOW TO USE THE 536 FOOT CONTROL ________ You can alter the short rewind time with the “BACKSPACE” rotary adjuster in the base of the machine. In the “+” position (maximum), the tape is rewound as long as the pedal is held down. Stop Release the pedal. – The following appears in the display: STOP ENGLISH – If the end of a letter is marked you will hear a short beep and the tape will stop briefly Keep the pedal pressed down if you wish to continue. min LETTER 15 SEARCH FUNCTION _______________________________________ The search function automatically locates marks set at the end of letters during recording. Forward search Press the »SEARCH/ERASE ŁŁ »ŁŁ FFWD« button down together. « button and the – The following appears in the display: SEARCH FFWD min LETTER Backward search Press the »SEARCH/ERASE « button and the ĵĵ »ĵĵ REWIND« button down together. – The following appears in the display: SEARCH min LETTER The search ends at the next end-of letter mark. Abort search Press the » STOP/PLAY « button. – The following appears in the display: ̛/ ı 16 ̛ ı STOP min LETTER REWIND CARE AND MAINTENANCE ____________________________ Housing ENGLISH Only clean the machine with a soft cloth suitable for removing dust. Polish and cleaning agents can damage the surface. Liquids should not be allowed to penetrate the inside of the unit. Parts that come into contact with the tape You should check regularly within the steno-cassette compartment for dust and for dirt caused by tape usage. We recommend that you clean these parts with a soft cotton swab that has been dipped in cleaning alcohol. Never use metal or hard objects! ɟ Open the tape compartment and remove the steno-cassette. ŁŁ Press and hold the »FFWD ŁŁ « button and the ĵĵ »ĵĵ REWIND« button simultaneously: – The capstan shaft spins.
