Sterling’s Guide: Accepting EMV Chip Cards Tips on Accepting EMV Chip Cards Many first-time chip-card users will need assistance, so some brief training of your staff is important to ensure customer success and a positive impression of your service.
The following are some helpful tips for accepting chip cards:
• When using the insertion reader on your
payment terminal, be sure that the customer inserts and keeps the contact card inserted until the transaction is completed - customers are used to swiping their card and removing it immediately.
• Make sure that customers don't forget their chip card in the readers.
• For contactless chip cards or mobile
devices, customers hold the card or device up to the payment terminal for a few seconds until a beep is heard signifying that the card or device has been successfully read. Instruct customers to read and follow all prompts and messages on the payment terminal until the transaction is complete. The terminal will instruct both the merchant and the consumer exactly what action is required.

Sterling’s Guide: Accepting EMV Chip Cards Benefits of Accepting EMV Chip Card Transactions
•
The ability to accept EMV transactions virtually eliminates merchant liability for transactions performed using lost, stolen or counterfeit cards.
•
The use of advanced security features offered by Sterling, including EMV, increases customer confidence - especially important as negative publicity from merchant data breaches has increased so dramatically.
•
Newer payment terminals and devices offered by Sterling offer customers more ways to pay, including Apple Pay and Google Wallet.
•
International customers almost always request payments via EMV rather than with a mag stripe reader.
•
Implementing EMV now will prepare merchants for additional security enhancements Sterling offers, including "end-to-end encryption" and "tokenization" Together, these enhancements offer the best security capabilities offered anywhere.

In October 2015, Visa, Mastercard and American Express shifted card-present liability to the merchant if they are not processing EMV card payments with an EMV enabled terminal. In other words, if a fraudulent transaction were to take place and you were not equipped with EMV technology, the cost of fraud would now fall back on you. However, there is no government or industry mandate that merchants must migrate to EMV technology. That said, Sterling recommends the use of EMV technology to all merchants accepting card-present transactions in order to protect their businesses.
