LAJOLLA D E N TA L I M A G E fa mily and cosmetic dentistry with Dr. Wali Hamidy from the dentist Produced to improve your dental health and awareness You might never picture this, but my team and I must also stay on top of our regular dental appointments! The last thing we want is to be having the “time of our lives” and suddenly have a painful dental problem. Being proactive is always the way to go. Brush after meals and floss daily. Watch for any abnormalities such as tender gums, bleeding (or a pinkish tinge to your toothpaste when brushing), food that is catching on dental work, or any sore in your mouth that doesn’t heal after two weeks. Wear a mouthguard if you’re playing sports (and we can custommake one for you). Always keep your regular appointments! If you need to see us on short notice, give us a call. We’ll fit you in and keep you smiling! Yours in good dental health, Dr. Wali Hamidy P.S. Check out our new smile-healthy recipe inside! Straight Talk Invisalign … metal is just a memory How does Invisalign® work? Invisalign straightens crowded, protruding, or too far apart teeth without metal braces. First, we take an impression of your teeth, then with the impression, the Invisalign lab uses computer technology and your smile prescription to create a series of clear, biocompatible aligners. These will move your teeth in tiny, comfortable increments. You wear each invisible aligner for about two weeks before graduating to the next ... until you have the smile you want. Is Invisalign technology really new? Yes, and it is built upon reliable, sound, scientific principles. Invisalign uses: n Advanced laser technology to create an accurate 3D digital image of your teeth; n Advanced computer software to simulate time-lapsed tooth correction; n Advanced computerized fabrication of customized aligners. Invisalign benefits you because you are: n Sophisticated about and appreciative of technology; n Computer-literate so you can understand treatment; n Expectant and appreciative of: wearing invisible appliances; faster results; shorter and fewer appointments; an accurate projection of end results; normal home care routines; use of a biocompatible material to decrease allergic response; minimal discomfort because teeth move in small increments and muscle soreness is rare even with a history of myofascial pain. Can any dentist prescribe Invisalign? No. Many hours of special training are required. As your dentist, I am the interface between your clinical needs and Invisalign technology. T H A N K Y O U F O R A L L Y O U R R E F E R R A L S . W E A P P R E C I AT E T H E M ! Cutting Down On Sugar Cavities and enamel erosion among children and teens are truly epidemic. Try to intercept the sweet, salty, familiar food they crave … and remember that despite their popularity, sports and energy drinks are never beneficial for healthy smiles. And it doesn’t stop with the kids. Change can be hard for adults too, but the effort is well worth it. Serious illnesses like diabetes, that can be brought on by poor eating habits, are no stranger to any generation. Here are 3 tips that might help you… n Dilute sweet acidic juices with water or choose other healthier alternatives. Water is ideal but single-serving-sized low-sugar beverages without food coloring is a start. n Choose healthy snack choices instead of sweet snacks. Sunflower seeds and nuts are a great choice in small quantities and plain yogurt with raw fruit is better than sweet commercially prepared yogurts. n For the kids, gradually combine a similar-appearing low-sugar cereal with a favorite sweet one until you’ve switched over to the wholesome one. And always remember to brush, floss, and rinse. If you have kids, they will always need a reminder ... and follow up to be sure they’re listening! 5 Bad Habits Broccoli Can your kids kick ’em? Kids’ cavities and irreversible enamel erosion are a huge problem. Can you guess why? Research shows that most youth… n Get 40% of their calories from soda, fruit drinks, dairy desserts, grain desserts, pizza, and whole milk. n Do not meet the daily recommendations for fruits, vegetables, or whole grains. n Consume too much sodium. n Drink more soda than milk. n Regularly drink enameleroding sports drinks. We’d like to help. Cavities and enamel loss are painful and can lead to lost school time and lowered selfesteem. Please bring your kids in to see us for an exam and easy tips on home care and food choices! Ounce for ounce, broccoli contains more vitamin C than an orange and as much calcium as a glass of milk. It’s great for your hair, skin, and teeth … and cancer-fighting broccoli is a great source of fiber, potassium, vitamins K & D, and can help form an acid-resistant film on teeth. The big bonus – it’s one of the kings of low-carb veggies. Steaming Broccoli Head of broccoli l ¼ cup water l Unsalted butter l 4 Cut florets into bite sized pieces 4 Add to pan with water & a pinch of salt 4 Cook on high for 3 minutes until water evaporates 4 Sauté until florets brown slightly 4 Remove from heat 4 Toss in a bit of butter & serve! The Crowning Glory Crown restorations are used to strengthen damaged teeth or replace lost teeth. They breathe new life into smiles for teens to mid-lifers to seniors. They’re a popular choice because of… n Esthetics – We can precision-fit crowns that are color and contour matched to your smile, so that they are completely natural looking. They can even correct uneven or crooked teeth and cover flaws like deep stains, significant chips, and wide gaps. n Durable functionality – Because today’s materials are strong and long-lasting, crowns also resist chipping, staining, and cracks. When attached to adjacent teeth to bridge a gap and replace a missing tooth, crowns alleviate stress in your bite and prevent shifting of teeth adjacent to the gap. They can even preserve the shape of your face. 5 Reasons You Need Regular Recare No matter what your age, crowns and bridges can improve your quality of life, make you look and feel attractive, and allow you to eat, speak, and socialize with confidence! We’ve all heard that we should “go to the dentist” at least every 6 months, but have you ever wondered why? 1. Early intervention of cavities and detection of damaged teeth and restorations can prevent complications, emergencies, and expense. 2. Cleaning and polishing your smile regularly will remove tartar from above and below the gumline, something only we can do to help prevent gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss. Crowns 3. Your circulatory, digestive, reproductive, and respiratory systems are connected to oral health.
