Chapter 6. The Video Archive Stratus has two main objectives. The first is to display what is currently happening with all devices on the system, such as displaying live video. The second is allowing a user to review archived video and alerts. Stratus provides several tools to facilitate finding the video that you care about quickly, without having to review hours of video showing the same static scene. Once you have found video you feel is important, you can save a snapshot or export a video clip of it. See Chapter 8, Exporting Video Clips or Snapshots for further information. This chapter will explain the many tools for doing this.
Archive Mode Cameras, as well as other objects in the interface, have two modes: Live and Archive. When a camera is first dragged to the Workspace it will start in Live mode. To view what has been recorded by a camera you must enter Archive mode. To do this: 1. Drag out a camera. 2. Select the camera by clicking on the name. This will cause the title bar to turn blue.* 3. Click the icon (designating Live mode). This will cause it to change to the (designating Archive mode).
icon
The camera is now in archive mode. The following sections will explain different ways to move about the archive to find the video that is important.
Note * - There is a reason you need to click on the title before moving a camera in to archive mode. Let's say that you wish to view multiple cameras' archive at the same time, but in different places. When moving through the archive, it might get confusing as to which camera's archive you are currently viewing. The blue-colored title bar denotes which camera you are currently working with.
Note It is also possible to "pin" multiple cameras together, so that you are always viewing the same time period in archive on all of them. To do this, when selecting the cameras (as above) also click the
icon. All pinned cameras will act as a group in archive.
The Timeline The primary method of moving through the archive is through the Timeline. The Timeline is located at the top of the screen whenever you are reviewing archive.
Figure 6.1. The Timeline
15
The Video Archive The timeline can be broken in to several different parts In the center there is a vertical line - this is the seek cursor, and it denotes where the video frame being displayed is in the archive.
Figure 6.2. Seek Cursor
The middle and lower portion of the timeline is for the minutes. Clicking and dragging this portion will move you forwards and backwards a small amount, so you can easily move through the seconds and minutes. This gives you fine-grained control of your position in the archive. See expanded section of image above.
Figure 6.3. Navigating Archive
Across the top is a strip indicating the hours. Clicking and dragging this portion will allow you to quickly move the camera backwards and forwards through the hours. This gives you a tool for coarse manipulation of the time. This is shown by the expanded portion above.
Figure 6.4. Calendar
To the left of the timeline is a vertical bar. Clicking this bar will open a Calendar. From here, you can click on a day to jump to that day. Dates that are grey and crossed-out contain no archive, so can not be selected. See the figure above. In the background is a red graph. This graph indicates if there is video present at that time in the archive. If the red fills the middle-lower portion of the timeline, it means there is archive present for the entire minute. If instead there is only a red line, it means there is no archive present. If the graph is somewhere in-between, it means there is archive present, but not for the entire minute.
16
The Video Archive
Figure 6.5. Select Archive Segment
To either side of the seek cursor are two small arrows. Clicking and dragging these two arrows selects a portion of the archive. Clicking on the [X] will remove the selection. See the figure below. This is useful if you wish to create an event, or export a portion of the archive. More on these options later.
Event Log The easiest means of finding the archived video that you care about is the Event Log. Please see Chapter 7, Alarm / Event View for a detailed explanation.
Advanced Archive Search Stratus offers an additional way to review the archive with more control. Pressing the will open a new "Archive Search" tab. You can drag a camera in to the lower-left of this new tab to search through the archive for that camera.
Figure 6.6. Advanced Archive Search
When a camera has been added to search, the timeline at the top will also include a "filmstrip" below it. This filmstrip will show snapshots of the archive. Clicking on any snapshot will jump the video to that archive segment.
Figure 6.7. Filmstrip
Dragging the timeline or filmstrip works in the same way normal archive works, click-and-drag the hours to move the time by a coarse hourly tuning, click on the minutes for fine control for minutes and sub-minutes. 17
The Video Archive
Figure 6.8. Archive Search - Granularity
If you adjust the slider labled Granularity (in the bottom-right panel), you can adjust the time interval between "frames" on the filmstrip. For example, to show one "frame" every one minute either drag the slider to 60 seconds or type 60 in the text box to the right of the slider, then click Apply. The filmstrip will update to show a frame once per minute.
Figure 6.9. Archive Search - Buttons
Around the video cell are four buttons. The << and >> buttons will skip to the previous or next "frame". The C button will open a calendar, choosing any date in the calendar will skip the archive back to that day. Finally, to the right of the video are three small triangles in a line, clicking this button will expand the video to use the entire bottom part of the Archive Search tab and covering the filters. Clicking it agian will cause the video to shrink again.
18
The Video Archive
Motion Search Finally, you can also search the archive by searching for motion on the camera. Stratus provides a tool to further narrow the search to motion on a camera and in a certain area. Motion Search is exactly like the section called “Advanced Archive Search”, with additional filters allowing finer control of which archive is displayed in the "Filmstrip". It is recommended that you are familiar with Advanced Archive Search When in the Archive Search, click on the Motion Search tab in the low-right panel to open Motion Search filters.
Figure 6.10. Motion Search
You will notice some differences from the Advanced Archive Search: • The "filmstrip" will likely show few snapshots. This is because unlike Archive Search where snapshots are shown according the the Granularity, in Motion Search snapshots are only shown for archive periods where motion was detected. • The Filters frame in the lower-right has additional settings, as well as a view of the video with a grid overlain.

Figure 6.11. Motion Search - Filters
Table 6.1. Motion Search Filters Filter
Description
Granularity
Changing Granularity will change the maximum time between snapshots. if lowered, a single motion event may be broken in to multiple snapshots. If raised, multiple motion events may be combined.
Object Size (cells)
The video displayed beneath the Filters is subdivided in to multiple "Cells". Object Size is the total number of "Cells" that needed to have detected motion, over the entire video area. It is usually a good idea to estimate the the number of cell a person (or whatever you are trying to identify) occupies, and setting the Object Size to that many "Cells".
Pre-motion (sec)
When viewing a detection from the Filmstrip, this setting will control the number of seconds before the motion to start playing video. This allows you to establish context for the motion
Post-motion (sec)
When viewing a detection from the Filmstrip, this setting will control the number of seconds to be played after the motion, in case the source of the 20
The Video Archive Filter
Description detection stops moving, or otherwise no longer triggers motion detection.
It is also possible to set ignore regions over the video. This will allow you to exclude areas that include unimportant motion, such as tree branches blowing in the wind or computer monitors with a screen saver.
Figure 6.12. Motion Search - Ignore regions
In the figure above, there are ignore regions placed over open office doors and over the computer display in the background. This will filter the archive to only show motion in the hallway but not in the offices. To draw an ignore a "Cell", shift-click on one of the "Cells". You can also select an area to ignore by shift-click-and-drag and dragging over multiple "Cells". Once an area is set it will be displayed in grey. To remove an ignore area, click-and-drag over the area. The "Cells" should no longer be grey afterwords.
Figure 6.13. Motion Search - Filmstrip
Once any filter or ignore regions are applied, the filmstrip should show fewer snapshots. Selecting any of the snapshots should jump the video to the archive portion containing motion. Remember that you may have to wait up to "Pre-Motion" seconds before any motion is present.

Chapter 7. Alarm / Event View Event Log The Event Log allows you to view detailed events/alarms triggered by some or all of your IP devices. You can view the Event Log by selecting the Event log icon in the Layout panel (refer to Figure 7.1, “Select yellow triangle to view Event Log”). This action will open the Event Log including events/alarms for all the cameras in your device list.
