Here’s how single source lighting can make a huge difference. The new breed of photographer doesn’t wait for the best light – they create it. In shooting the cover photo, photographer Justin Van Leeuwen controlled the lighting by instructing his assistant to point the strobe on the subject. Justin then adjusted his camera’s exposure to match the output from the strobe. By overpowering the ambient daylight the result offers a darkening effect on the background’s exposure. It’s subtle. But it’s often the subtleties that make the biggest difference in making a good photo great. Strobism is all about taking great pictures with small lights. A Different Colour for a Different Effect The translucent material doesn’t actually reflect . Instead, it acts as a diffuser, which will soften the light rather than fill in the shadows . For greatest effect, the translucent reflector is usually held directly above the subject to soften the sun’s natural light . It will always go between the light source and the subject . It is useful in studio where flash is used, or when there is ample light outside like during sunny noontime shoots . As a photographer you can’t always wait for the best light . But you can create it . Perhaps, more accurately, you can change the light by bringing along a set of portable reflectors and, if you can, someone to help you position them . A favourite is the Illumi 5-in-1 . It saves time carrying a separate one for silver, white, gold, sunfire and translucent . Since each colour creates a different effect, with the 5-in-1 (shown here) you‘re ready for anything . You can select the colour that’s required for the time of day and kind of weather . The gold reflector will create a strong warm light and is best used to fill in shadows when your subject is in the shade . It is also useful for adding a warm glow to subjects who have darker skin – or at the opposite extreme, for improving the skin tones of someone who is very pale . Silver is used where a strong light is needed usually for shooting in low light .
