Fluid therapy Solution Bag Types Fluids for intravenous (in the vein) or subcutaneous (under the skin) use may come in bags of different styles, depending upon the manufacturer. Two of the most common styles of bags are shown below. Both types of bags have an injection port through which other drugs may be added to the solution, and a location to attach the solution administration set. The solution administration sets we sell will work with either type of bag. The numeric markings on both types of bags will only be visible on the right hand side of the bag. Attaching the Solution Administration Set Close the regulating clamp (5) by moving the roller all the way towards the adapter (7) end of the set. Remove the cover (1) from the spike (2), and remove the protective cover from the location on the bag where the spike will be inserted. Insert the spike. Do not touch the end of the spike with your fingers, or lay it on a countertop, etc., as that could contaminate it and the solution. Hang the bag and fill the drip chamber approximately ½ full by squeezing it, and then letting go. Open the regulating clamp and allow fluid to flow through the tubing until all of the air bubbles have been flushed out. Then close the regulating clamp. Administering the Fluid Remove the protective cover (8) from the adapter (7) and attach the hub (plastic end) of a sterile needle using a firm push and twist motion. Again do not touch the end of the adapter or end of the needle hub, as that could contaminate the solution. Remove the needle guard from the needle. If you are right-handed, hold the hub of the needle in your right hand. With your left hand, pick up fold of skin along your pet's shoulders (use a different site every time). Push the needle through the skin at about a 45º angle. Be careful not to push the needle through the entire fold of skin and out the other side, or accidentally into your finger. Open the regulating clamp and administer the appropriate amount of fluid. When finished, close the clamp and remove the needle from the skin. Storing Partially Used Solution Bags If storing the remainder of the solution for use at a later date, remove the used needle and attach a sterile one. Do not touch the end of the adapter or end of the needle hub. Solution may be stored in the refrigerator. Warm to at least room temperature prior to use. This information may not cover all possible uses, directions, side effects, precautions, allergic reactions, drug interactions, or withdrawal times. Always consult your own veterinarian for specific advice concerning the treatment of your pet. Rev. 9/14/2007
