In summer 2006 the new MAGIC
with the MAGIC AC1 LAN Software
W
ith the new MAGIC AC1 LAN Network Control Software, centralised configuration and monitoring of all MAGIC Audio Codecs installed within a network is now possible. The software allows simultaneous monitoring, configuration and control of up to 32 Audio Codecs. Individual systems can be selected dynamically from different work stations for an Audio transmission. System errors are displayed and listed automatically. The software can be used as often as desired within a network and works with
the MAGIC DC7, MAGIC AC1 and MAGIC AC1 XIP Audio Codec systems.

AC1 XIP & MAGIC AC1 XIP RM Audio Codecs are being introduced. Both systems are equipped with an ISDN, an X.21 and a LAN interface and support the G.711 (3,1-kHz), G.722 (7-kHz) coding algorithms and ISO/MPEG 1/2 Layer II & III (15-kHz).

System Operation The operation of the XIP family can be done via the integrated keypad with graphical display or with the use of a user friendly Windows PC Software (included in the delivery) via the RS232 as well as the integrated LAN interface.
Audio over IP Currently, Audio transmission over IP is still in the standardisation process, which is to be issued by the N/ACIP working group of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union). SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), which is well known from VoIP (Voice over IP), is used as the basis for standardisation. AVT is a member of this working group and actively contributes to the standardisation on a European level. From autumn 2006 the LAN interface will be extended by software release to include the possibility of Audio transmission compliant to the Standard.

AES Pro Audio Expo & Convention, short AES. This time the event took place at the Porte de Versailles Exhibition Center in Paris. Contrary to expectations, the high number of local and overseas visitors was surprising. During many personal conversa-
tions on the AVT stand, the new MAGIC TH2 POTS Telephone Hybrid with two analogue line interfaces and the Central Control Software for the MAGIC DC7, MAGIC AC1 and MAGIC AC1 XIP Audio Codecs was explained in detail. Interview with Mr. Brückl from BR („Bayerischer Rundfunk“) on the PKI Telephone and the MAGIC AC1 Audio Codec Ludwig Brückl is head of the IT & Communications Department at the Bavarian Public Broadcasting. He is responsible for all Telephone Hybrids, Audio Codecs, PCs, etc. that are used at the BR. AVT: Thank you very much, Mr Brückl, for your time and that you agreed to do this interview. How important is the PKI Telephone and the 15-kHz Telephone respectively for the BR? Snacks at the exhibition stand. The user interface, which is similar to a mobile phone user interface, guarantees easy operation and control. A telephone handset can also be connected to the MAGIC AC1 so that the handling becomes very like the PKI Telephone operation. For the MAGIC AC1, several software and hardware options are additionally available (Software Mixer, ISDN Monitor, Battery Pack, etc.). By the way: existing
AVT: Do you think the MAGIC AC1 Audio Codec could replace the PKI or the 15-kHz ISDN Telephone? Mr Brückl: Definitely. We have been always very satisfied with the AVT systems and we’re planning for the future to replace all PKI telephones by and by with the MAGIC AC1. We are convinced that this is the best alternative for us - technologically as well as price wise.
The PKI Telephone Era lives on! fter 15 years the PKI Telephone slowly but surely goes into retirement. The first version of the PKI Telephone could operate in the 3.1-kHz and in the 7-kHz modes. In 2000, the 15-kHz ISDN Telephone was introduced which offered in addition to the PKI mode, Audio coding in 15-kHz quality. As a successor to these telephones, the new MAGIC AC1 Audio Codec is now in the starting blocks. It provides the same functionalities as the 15-kHz IS-
Mr Brückl: The PKI Telephone is very important for the BR. Up to 250 PKI Telephones are currently in use, which speaks for the systems, of course. Especially, the user-friendly and easy operation of the PKI Telephones convinced us right from the beginning.
PKI 7-kHz Telephones can still be cost-effectively upgraded to 15-kHz ISDN Telephones by exchanging the lower part of the housing.

AVT: How do you evaluate the MAGIC AC1 in terms of user friendly operation? Is the operation of MAGIC AC1 as simple as the operation of the PKI Telephone? Mr Brückl: One of the main reasons why we bought the PKI Telephones was their easy usability. Of course, our users will now have to accustom themselves to the MAGIC AC1. But we are very confident that our employees will understand the concept of the MAGIC
„Simply Clear!“ The MAGIC AC1 Audio Codec convinces with many features that guarantee an easy, user friendly operation. The user interface is similar to the one on a mobile phone and is immediately understandable. In the integrated Telephone Book not only can the name and phone number be saved but also a corresponding system configuration. The 0 to 9 numerical keys on the front keypad can be used as Quick Dial Keys. The user only needs to press a single key to establish a connection to a subscriber with the desired configuration. AC1 Audio Codec and can work with the system immediately without any problems. And AVT is also offering an external keypad with user interface that is similar to the one on the PKI Telephone. All together, MAGIC AC1 seems to be a worthy successor to the PKI Telephone. AVT: In which way do the new functionalities of MAGIC AC1 such as the headset interface, the ISDN Monitor, the Mixer, etc., facilitate the daily operation at the BR? Mr Brückl: The headset interface is a huge facilitation for the user. AVT even offers a telephone handset for this interface which means that there is almost no difference anymore to the operation of the PKI Telephone. The ISDN Monitor and the Mixer haven’t been used extensively in our daily operation so far so they still must stand the test.
