Summit Newsletter of South Anchorage High School October 2004
Dear Parents:
Administration Chuck Fannin Principal Brian Hosken, A.P. Curriculum Patrick Henry, A.P. Student Services Jamie Jones, A.P. Activities Pat Walker, A.P. Staff Services
Though there’s a chill in the air and snow is creeping down the mountains, the fall colors visible from the classroom windows of South Anchorage High school are truly beautiful.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank students, staff, and parents for their positive attitude, hard work, and fantastic energy that have all led to a smooth opening of our new school. The support of our parents has been wonderful and I would particularly like to thank all the folks involved in assisting us during the first day of school and those involved with the Homecoming All-School Breakfast. We value your support and presence in the building. Establishing meaningful traditions is something we will all be doing together this year as a South Anchorage High School community and the Homecoming Breakfast, where parents, students, and staff shared a meal as the band played and class colors flew, was a great beginning to our first Homecoming weekend. I look forward to the year to come as we celebrate many “firsts” together.
I would also like to thank all the parents who were able to join us for our Open House and visit their student’s classes. Being a partner with your student’s teachers is vital to academic success and I would encourage you to continue the conversations that began that night. We have such an excellent staff and they are committed to working with you and your student to ensure a quality education for all. I have visited multiple classrooms and have witnessed very positive and engaging instruction in all areas. Finally, just a reminder that the High School Graduation Qualifying Exam for juniors and seniors who have either not taken or not passed one or more sections of the test is October 5, 6, and 7. It is important that students are well rested and nourished prior to this exam. Our opening year has started off great and I look forward to working with you throughout the school year to make sure we provide the best possible experience for students. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 742-6217 or via e-mail at

Curriculum Department Brian Hosken, A.P. 742-6257 We have been allotted an additional five teachers at South Anchorage. The addition of these five new teachers will allow us to reduce class sizes and offer additional electives to meet the needs of our students. A reminder that the Alaska State High School Graduation Qualifying Exam (HSGQE) will be administered October 5, 6 & 7, 2004 to Juniors and Seniors who have not yet passed all three sections. We will soon be contacting those individual students to remind them of the test. We would also encourage parent/guardian assistance to make sure that those students still needing to meet state graduation standards are well rested, in attendance, and on time for those testing dates. One of our goals is to make sure that all students meet graduation standards and pass all three sections of the test. With parents/guardians as our partners supporting our students, we believe that we can meet the aforementioned goal. Spring testing dates for Freshmen, Sophomores (HSGQE) and Junior and Seniors still needing to pass the HSGQE will be April 5, 6 & 7, 2005. More information regarding these tests and dates will follow.

The SAT in place through January 2005 includes the Verbal and Math sections broken into seven sub-areas for specific content. Each edition of the Egan Convention Center new SAT includes a Critical Reading section, Math section Because of the high and Writing section. There will be 10 sub-sections which number of transcript will include a 25 minute written essay and the essay will requests at this time always appear first on the test. of year, transcripts In this transitional year between the current test and will not be ready until the following the new SAT, students should pay close attention to the day. Please plan ahead admission test requirements of the colleges to which they are applying. Heads up for Testing Dates! The PSAT will be given on Saturday, October 16 at South Anchorage High School for Sophomores and Juniors. The junior year scores are used to qualify students for National Merit standing and other scholarship opportunities. Students will be asked to bring the test fee of $15 to the Career Resource Center in early October.
The ACT will be given at Hanshew Middle School on these dates this school year: October 23, 2004 February 12, 2005 December 11, 2004 April 9, 2005 June 11, 2005 Students may register on-line at www.act.org or in the Career Resource Center. Registration pamphlets may be picked up at the Career Resource Center. Information is also available on-line at www.act.org.
742 - 6257 The SAT will be given at West High School on the following dates this year: October 9, 2004 November 6, 2004 December 4, 2004 January 22, 2005 March 12, 2005 March 12, 2005 May 7, 2005 June 4, 2005 Students may register on-line at www.collegeboard.com or in the Career Resource Center. Registration pamphlets may be picked up at the Career Resource Center. Information is also available on-line at www.collegeboard.com The PLAN test is scheduled at South Anchorage High School for Saturday, November 13, 2004. PLAN is the pre-ACT test, given to sophomores only. PLAN focuses attention on both career preparation and improving academic achievement in addition to being a predictor of success on the ACT Assessment. Registration information will be available in early November.
Is There Any New Information Regarding the ACT? Yes! During 2004 only one test option is available – the ACT Assessment, which includes four multiplechoice tests covering English, mathematics, reading and science. However, beginning in February 2005, a second test option will be offered – the ACT Assessment Plus Writing, which includes a 30-minute Writing Test administered as the fifth test. This test is designed for students planning to enter a college that requires or recommends the Writing Test in fall 2006 or later. Taking the Writing Test does not affect a student’s scores on the four multiple-choice tests or the ACT Composite score. More detailed information on both the SAT and ACT is available on-line. Many colleges will accept either the SAT or ACT. If possible, students should plan to take both tests. Many students do much better on one test or the other, depending on the learning style and test taking strategies of the individual student.

Student Services Patrick Henry, A.P. 742-6272 GREETINGS FROM YOUR SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS The school resource officers are Anchorage Police Officers working within each high school. We are here to assist you and your students in creating a safe and drug free school environment. We’ve had a successful start of the school year with the staff and students at South Anchorage High School. The security staff has brought to our attention concerns about students driving carelessly through the parking lot and on the adjacent roadways. The security staff has observed students speeding, failing to yield, unsafe backing, and driving with a lack of concern for others. There already have been three minor accidents and we are concerned the number of accidents will increase with inclement weather. Now would be a great time to review defensive driving skills with your family.
We will be enforcing all moving violations on school grounds and adjacent roadways. Please be advised that we will also be enforcing parking violations such as parking/standing in red zones (fire zones), parking in handicap parking without appropriate tags, expired registration, incorrect/ not current tags on the vehicle, and not having plates properly affixed on both bumpers.
These are examples of citations that the Anchorage Police Department will be issuing throughout the school year. If you have any questions or concerns, we can be contacted through the Student Services office. We look forward to having a safe and enjoyable school year at South Anchorage High School.

A letter to the parents of the
Class of 2005 Dear South High Parents: As the first graduating class of South Anchorage High School, we, the senior class, are very excited about this school year. Establishing new traditions and planning senior class activities present many challenges. Senior Breakfasts, Senior Fun Day, and Senior Prom are just a few examples of class activities that we will be planning. Covering the cost of these activities requires significant fundraising. We have the extra challenge of starting the school year with zero funds. The senior class is asking for your support and help in any way. We are in need of donations, volunteers and fundraising ideas. We look forward to working together to create a fun and successful year. Please contact Scott Kniefel, Student Government Advisor, Todd Heuston and/or Jocelyn Friedman, senior class sponsors at 742-6200 or by email. Thank you very much! Immunizations I would like to thank all the parents and students for their help in making Registration at the Nurse’s station as smooth as it possibly could be. I know many of you had to wait in lines and several had to interrupt their Registration process in order to go get their child the necessary shots for school (mandated by Alaska State Law). I would like to remind parents to remember to give the Nurse’s Office a copy of their child’s shot record every time an immunization is given. Healthcare Provider’s do not automatically send this information. In fact, it is against HIPPA regulations to do so without your consent. Please, Cover Your Sneeze... Don’t Let it Blow in the Breeze!
Tuberculosis Testing All New-to-District students must be tested for Tuberculosis as per Alaska State Law. Parents signed the “PPD Tuberculin Skin Test Consent” form during Registration. Nurse Luann will be starting Tuberculosis testing and Health Screening of all New-to-District students in October. For those parents who choose to get the Tuberculosis skin test at their Health Care Provider, please get the test and turn in the result before the end of November. If you have questions, please call Nurse Luann at 742-6287.
The South Library is up and running! More books are arriving weekly. Our final computer connections will be completed this week, thanks to Mr. Tryon, the Tech guru. Students have been checking out books since Day 1. Our very first South High book checked out was Mr. Whitekeys’ Alaska Bizarre. Just a reminder that students need their student ID in hand to check out library books. The Library Staff would like to give a hearty thanks to Lt. Colonel Orme and the ROTC students for all of their help with setting up the libary. We have two great student aides assisting us with South Library tasks. We invite you to come up and see the beautiful South LIbrary. We think you will love it, too. Web Site of the Month: www.worldbookonline.com. User ID is: asdworldbook. Password is: @yourlibrary. Arrive Alive! ~ Drive Defensively to and from South High ~ Students and parents driving to South Anchorage High School—please take note of the following defensive driving reminders. Have a Safe School Year!
1.
On DeArmoun Road the posted speed is 40 mph. Huffman is posted at 45 mph, and Elmore at 35 mph. The steep hill and curve on DeArmoun at Bainbridge are posted at 25 mph!
2.
The State will install extra road signs this fall on DeArmoun above E. 140th warning drivers of the hill, curves, and advisory speeds.
3.
Don't have a moose for a hood ornament! Slow down for our hoofed friends.
4.
The majority of accidents on DeArmoun involve excessive speed. Back off on that accelerator and don't become a statistic.
5.
Please use extra caution pulling onto DeArmoun or Huffman from Elmore, and mind the speed of vehicles approaching from the East or West.
6.
Recent roadwork on DeArmoun and on Elmore added paved trails. Please yield for bike riders, walkers, and joggers crossing side streets.
7.
DeArmoun from E. 140th to Hillside Drive is narrow and mountainous. Four-wheel drive and/or studded snow tires are recommended.
8.
The steep hill and curve at Bainbridge & DeArmoun are posted at 25 mph. Many people attempt the curve at higher speeds. It’ll cost you at least $100 to get towed out of the ditch! A collision claim or speeding ticket can increase your auto insurance rates by as much as 50%.
9.
Slower-than-posted speeds are recommended when ice, snow, or school buses are present. Please be careful and leave extra stopping distance when approaching school buses and students waiting for buses.
10.The Huffman westbound (downhill) approach to Elmore is on a steep grade. Please adjust your speed when approaching this intersection.
11.Observe the Elementary school crossing on Huffman at Lorraine! 12.The curve at the top of Huffman can be a tricky. Look twice when entering or exiting Birch Road south! 13.Please avoid using neighborhood streets as "shortcuts." This increases danger and congestion for neighborhood residents. If you see someone driving in an unsafe manner, please report it to school security staff or Anchorage Police Department. APD's non-emergency dispatchers (786-8900) are happily taking descriptions and license plate numbers of vehicles breaking the law.
Win a Free Dinner for 2! South High Students: Enter to win dinner for 2 at the Flying Machine Restaurant for your parents (or yourself) by writing a 250 word letter on why you plan to observe these safety tips. Deliver to the school office before October 15, 2004. Entries limited to South High students. One entry per student. Please type or print legibly and include your full name, your age, your parent's name, and your home phone number.
