This means you can install SureTrend in your organization and configure it for your needs. You can install it on one computer and manage one or more units, or share your data with other computers on the network that have SureTrend 4.0 installed. Alternatively, you can install SureTrend 4.0 on a server and make it available to multiple users in your organization. The units can be centrally managed and programmed, and the results collected from the units can be consolidated for auditing and data analysis. The graphic in Figure 1 depicts the deployment scalability. Figure 1 You are not locked into a deployment option. You can install on a single computer and then move to the most advanced multiuser installation, or you can reduce the multiuser install to a single user system. You can size the SureTrend deployment to fit your needs. The remainder of this document will describe the install procedures and discuss the benefits of the different deployment options. Audience The audience for this document is IT and users that want to understand how they may use SureTrend in their organization. The document assumes you know: 1. The version of Windows software you are using. Windows XP, Vista, 7, or 8.x. 2. Microsoft SQL Server or the concept of a database. 3. The basic concepts of a single computer, Local Area Networks (LAN), and Wide Area Networks (WAN). This program will install the client and will optionally install the server components or email program used to send reports via email. The following are the detailed instructions for installing. 1. Download the install program from the hygiena.com website. The URL is: http://www.hygiena.com/doc_download/590-suretrend-beta-download 2. Run the SureTrend_vxxx.exe program where xxx is an install version number. The remainder of this section describes the steps and options to install SureTrend 4.0. It is advisable that you read the Deployment Option sections later in the document for a better understanding of different ways to install SureTrend 4.0. Select the Language Select the language to guide you through the install. This is not language that SureTrend will use when running. This is the language for the install screens. See Figure 2. SureTrend 4.0 has been tested for English only at the time of this documentation. Other languages are expected to work and will be tested shortly. For beta purposes you can install in other languages, but our support is limited to English at this time. Figure 2 Page 3 of 15 SureTrend 4.0 Install Expand and Prepare The install will expand and prepare to install. This process takes the install program and decompresses it into the actual install program. Figure 3 End User License Agreement You need to accept the End User License agreement to allow the install to proceed. Figure 4 Page 4 of 15 SureTrend 4.0 Install Install Options The Select Features screen in Figure 5 allows for the features of SureTrend to be selected and installed. The features are:   Multiuser- Distributed Network Email Reporting Figure 5 Multiuser – Distributed Network Check this feature if you want to install the SureTrend server components. The server components will allow access to the SureTrend database on this computer from other computers running the SureTrend client. The SureTrend clients will need to be configured to point to this computer and they will have to have appropriate permissions. The computer does not need to be a Windows Server. It can be a desktop computer running Windows 7 or 8/8.1 Professional. When using a desktop computer to perform server functions you should consider the server responsibilities such as backup and always on. If your desktop computer goes into power saving mode it may prevent users from accessing SureTrend 4.0. The Multiuser option will install a SureTrend service in Microsoft’s Internet Information Server (IIS). It will also enable the appropriate roles on the computer to allow for IIS services. This includes IIS and ASP.Net. See Figure 6. Email Reporting The Email Report option is selected by default, but should only be selected on one computer that will be performing the email operation. If SureTrend is installed on a server the Email Reporting option should not be selected. The Email Reporting option should only be selected on a client. The email reporting function runs as a background program in the user’s context. Page 5 of 15 SureTrend 4.0 Install Figure 6 Restart Required If the Multiuser option is selected, installing the role components may require a reboot of the computer. Figure 7 Page 6 of 15 SureTrend 4.0 Install Changing the Features The Feature selection can be modified after install by selecting Programs and Features in Control Panel. See Figure 8. Select Hygiena SureTrend Data Analysis 4.0 and then select the Change option. When the SureTrend 4.0 installer starts, select the Modify option. Figure 8 Figure 9 Finish Install When the install is finished you will get the following screen. Press the Finish button and you should be able to run SureTrend from the shortcut on the desktop or from the Program group. Page 7 of 15 SureTrend 4.0 Install Figure 10 Files and Folders Default Database File Location The SureTrend install will install the Microsoft SQL Server Compact database version 3.5 for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. The database file, suretrend.sdf is placed in a common program data location on the computer so multiple users on the computer can access the same data. This is the default configuration. It is possible to copy the suretrend.sdf to other locations on the computer or network and change their access permissions to restrict user access. Also SureTrend has internal application security that can be enabled. You can rename the suretrend.sdf or change its password. Warning: if you change the password you need to remember the password. Hygiena support cannot recover lost passwords. If you do not have the password to your data it can’t be accessed. Figure 11 Page 8 of 15 SureTrend 4.0 Install Deployment Options Summary SureTrend can be deployed in the following configurations in the table below. The different configurations give users the ability to deploy SureTrend to work within their network infrastructure. For most users SureTrend will be installed on a single Windows XP, Vista, 7, or 8.x computer. However, some users will have multiple locations separated geographically and the network characteristics become a challenge for applications. The network latency and bandwidth defines the speed at which data can be accessed from one computer to the other. SureTrend is designed to work over slower networks with higher latency. Default Install Details Single Computer Yes SQL Compact database on local computer Performance Good Security Simple. Database is local and users need read/write access Good. If computer crashes database can get corrupted, but very unlikely. Largest risk is backup. Data Integrity Complexity of Install. Very low. Install does everything. Shared Disk No SQL Compact database is copied to a network share Dependent on network latency and bandwidth Simple. Database is local and users need read/write access Fair. If computer crashes or network fails database can get corrupted, but very unlikely. Network shares are commonly backed up by IT. Moderate. Database file needs to be moved to network location and clients need to be pointed to network location. SQL Server Direct No Database is moved to a SQL Server Distributed Option Database access is via Web Services Dependent on network latency and bandwidth Advanced. Users do not have direct access to SQL Server Very good. If computer crashes database will not be corrupted. SQL Servers usually backed up by IT. Good. Designed for low latency networks Best. Users do not have access to SQL Server or database files. Very good. If computer crashes database will not be corrupted. SQL Servers usually backed up by IT. High. Database migration tool used to move SQL Compact database to SQL Server. User account must be created for application access. Clients need to be pointed to SQL Server. Low. Install option for workgroup installations. Server computer automatic. Clients must be point to workgroup master. If SQL Server is desired you can replace SQL Compact with SQL Server, but you will need to migrate the database. Page 9 of 15 SureTrend 4.0 Install Deployment Option Details SureTrend Architecture To easily understand the deployment options it is important to understand the logical architecture of the SureTrend software. This makes it easier to understand what software components are running, the computer or server they are running on, and the network connections between the computers that are required. Single Computer Deployment The graphic in Figure 12 shows the basic components of the SureTrend software. For most users they will deploy SureTrend on a single computer and connect one or more units to this computer. The data is stored in the database file SureTrend.sdf. One or more users can login to the Windows computer and they can share the database. For example the administrator can login to the computer and add users to SureTrend such as a manager and operator. When these users login to the computer they can access SureTrend in their specific role. For example the manager can setup test points (locations), thresholds, and program the units. The operator can login to the computer and synchronize the unit uploading all the test results they have collected for the period. The manager can then login to the computer, run reports, and analyze the data. As you can see from Figure 12 the SureTrend.App.exe contains all the software components and reads and writes the data to the SureTrend.sdf file. The SureTrend.sdf file is a SQL Server Compact database file. One computer is designated as the server and the SureTrend distributed features are installed and configured. This allows the server computer to share the database with other computers on the network. The computer does not need to be a physical server. This is ideal for small workgroups where there may be other users that perform a role and have their own computer. For example the manager may make their computer the server. They will perform all the unit programing, configuration, and data analysis. The remote user may only perform the tests on the unit and synchronize the unit to upload the test results to the database. Considerations The server computer must be on in order for remote users to access the SureTrend database. In some environments the personal computer (server) may go into power conservation mode (sleep) when not in use preventing access for remote users. Also, it is important to back up the SureTrend.sdf database file on a regular basis. You will need to install SureTrend on the server or computer and select the Distributed option to install the server components. A Windows server is preferred because of the increased performance and robustness of the server, and most servers are managed and backed up by IT. This multiuser deployment option is preferred over a shared network disk because of the more robust network support. Page 11 of 15 SureTrend 4.0 Install Shared Disk Deployment Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 supports placing the SureTrend.sdf (database) file on a shared network disk. This model can be used to share a SureTrend.sdf database with other users. There are some considerations. Like any shared disk application the network durability and latency to the shared disk is critical for data integrity and performance. If the network is prone to lost connections, the database can become corrupted during updating. In many cases it can be easily repaired, but not in all cases. If the network latency is over 30ms you will see noticeable degradation in performance. The advantage to this deployment is the minimal server requirements. The server only needs to have a Windows compatible shared disk in the form of a mapped drive or UNC path. Users will need permissions to read and write the SureTrend.sdf file.
