HOW TO SAVE MONEY on FOSSIL FUELS with hybrid systems SwissSolar is supporting its clients to get the most reliable power solution at the best possible kWh price while reducing CO2 emissions. The process is especially important when running a diesel generator: Since generators need to cover peak load demands, they need to be oversized and normally run on very low average loads, creating high operating costs (OPEX) for fuelling (see graph left) and maintenance. Adding renewable components do require additional capital expenditures (CAPEX), however are paying back relatively fast due to OPEX savings between 30 to 50%. This process requires detailed analyses of the typical load profile in order to find the right balance between OPEX and CAPEX when combining solar, diesel/gas and grid components within one hybrid system. If required, SwissSolar is also supporting its clients to find a third party financing solution. © 2017 SwissSolar Lda - all rights reserved Example Telco Tower: with Solar added, we run the generator at 3 to 4 times better efficiency than DG only!  The permanent magnet underwater generator provides AC power, dives when water level rises, ideal for waters with heavy debris, and expandable system with multiple turbines, max. output of 5kW @ 2.8m/s For example to produce 1kW of electric power we need a flow of 1.7 m/s in a 2x2 m water channel (=6’800 l/s) Low head sites are in the head range between 1m and around 6m. Major characteristic of a low head site is a canal to lead the water to the turbine. Because we have low head conditions, we need a big amount of water to produce energy! For example to produce 1kW of electric power on a head of 1m, we need about 170 l/s of water. Medium head sites are in the range between 6m and around 30m head. Medium head sites are mostly penstock based systems. Because of the higher available head, we need less water to produce the same electric power.
