Canvas SU provides you with access to Canvas, a Learning Management System (LMS). Canvas is used to communicate with you, provide lecture and handout materials, quizzes, and other content. The instructor will monitor the Canvas account in the event that you have questions. At Canvas, you will find the syllabus, course calendar, discussion boards, and other materials. CengageNOW (CNOW) CengageNOW is an on-line learning resource site developed to accompany the textbook. At this site, you will find the e-book for the course and study tools (glossary, flashcards T/F quiz, etc.). You will also find the Book Resources (Excel templates and T/F quiz). Create a CengageNow account or access an existing account and register for the course: https://login.cengagebrain.com/course/E-HY7W3PLYQSCN9 It is critical to log into Cengage no later than the first day of class. If you have not purchased the access code, you may follow the link and log into the course for free for the first few days of the course. Your work will be saved when you purchase the access code. Textbook and Materials Access Card - CengageNOW for Cornerstones of Cost Management, 3rd edition, Mowen/Hansen. The access card includes an electronic copy of the textbook as well as access to homework assignments and quizzes. The access card is bundled with a loose leaf copy of the textbook at the SU bookstore. A basic nonprogrammable calculator for class assignments and exams. Grading Scale The final grade will be assigned according to the following scale: 2 Grading Preparation/Presence/ Promptness/Participation Homework Assignments Quizzes Midterm Exam Comprehensive Final Exam 10% 20% 20% 25% 25% Total 100% Preparation/Presence/ Promptness/Participation Preparation/Presence/ Promptness/Participation score is subjectively decided based on your preparation, attendance (mental and physical), promptness (class arrival and in-class activities), and willingness to participate meaningfully, as well as your contribution to other classmates’ learning in class and on Canvas discussion boards. Students are expected to attend every class. If you miss a class, you are responsible for all of the material covered during that class. As a matter of courtesy, please inform the instructor if you will not be able to attend class. Professionalism in the classroom is extremely important. Showing up late and texting during class are not acceptable. There will be ample opportunities for you to actively participate. You are strongly encouraged to actively participate by asking questions and contributing to discussions, both in-class on online. Inclass participation provides an opportunity for you to practice skills in public speaking and listening, as well as to enhance your ability to logically develop arguments supporting your line of reasoning. Online participation includes the Canvas discussion boards. The PPPP score is awarded after chapters 3, 6 and 9. Discussion Boards In the Canvas classroom, there is a Discussion Boards Module. In this module, you will find Discussion Boards to facilitate student discussion and understanding of the material. Set your Canvas notifications so that you see discussion board items as they are posted. The postings may relate to a homework assignment that you are doing (or about to do). Use the Discussion Board to provide information, to ask questions about the material being covered or to ask a question about how to use CengageNOW or Canvas. You may not post answers to assignments, but you may point a fellow student in the correct direction. The instructor will monitor the Discussion Board forums to make sure that correct answers are being given to the questions posted, and to observe participation. Remember, if you have a question regarding a grade or a personal issue that you wish to discuss with the instructor, please email such questions and requests to the instructor’s school email address. These types of issues should not be posted in the Discussion Boards 3 Homework Assignments Throughout the quarter homework assignments are designed to reinforce the concepts of the lecture material will be assigned. Mastery of the homework is crucial to your understanding of cost accounting. These assignments are to be done individually, and are due at the beginning of class on their respective due dates. You are encouraged to begin the assignments early because late assignments will generally not be accepted. The course calendar in Canvas contains the assignment/quiz/exam schedule, and will be updated with new assignments, quizzes, exams, or due dates as needed during the quarter. Each class day may include a reading assignment, a homework assignment, due dates for homework assignments, quizzes and/or exams. Unless otherwise noted, these assignments should be completed as designated using Cengage, Microsoft Excel (or a similar spreadsheet program), Canvas, or on paper. Cengage assignments are submitted in Cengage Excel assignments are submitted twice: a hard copy in class and an electronic version in Canvas. Paper assignments are submitted in class. Cengage assignments: Assignments are due at the beginning of class. When working on an Assignment in Cengage, you will be able to use the “Check My Work” function twice for exercise/problem and you will be able to “take” an Assignment twice (for a total of four attempts). Your correct answers from each take will carry over to the next take so you will only be working on the parts of an Assignment that you did not finish or did not get correct on the previous take. Save your work before you exit. Assignments include exercises, problems, and other. Due dates are specified in the Course Calendar. It is your responsibility to keep track of due dates. Assignments will still be available in CengageNOW after the due date for study purposes only and cannot be submitted for grading once a due date has passed. Do not click on the orange Submit Assignment button in CengageNOW unless you have completed all questions within a Homework Assignment. If you click on this button before completing all questions, CengageNOW will treat this submission as one “take”. If you want to review your homework after completing it, use the Grades tab, scroll down to the assignment, and click on the blue highlighted score. Any instructor notes on your assignment will appear to the right of the assignment on the Grades tab. Do NOT use the Assignments tab to review homework – you will be charged with another take and could receive a zero if you are reviewing the assignment past the due date. 4 Quizzes A Cengage quiz will be given after the completion of each chapter. Each quiz will be accessible in CengageNOW for a 24-hour period beginning at 11:00 am on the day it appears on the course calendar. It is your responsibility to keep track of quiz dates. When you access the quiz within CengageNOW, it will tell you how much time you have for completing the quiz. Once you start working on a quiz, you will NOT be able to stop the quiz/midterm and come back to it later in the day. While taking a quiz you are NOT to be accessing notes, textbooks or any other reference materials. Treat your quiz experience as a closed-book testing situation (see the academic integrity policy in the syllabus). There is a one-time-per-quarter exception for the due date on one assignment or one quiz (Chapters 1-10). This is one exception total, for use on either one assignment or on one quiz. The due date is generally extended only one additional class day. If you get “kicked out” of CengageNOW while taking an exam, immediately try to get back into the exam. If you cannot access the exam, then immediately send the instructor an email explaining what happened and then watch your email for further instructions. In completing the quiz, you will not be able to print out the quiz nor will you be able to take the quiz more than once. If you do not take a quiz on the date that it appears on the course calendar and you have not made prior arrangements with the instructor, then you will receive a score of zero (0) on the quiz. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor if they are experiencing difficulties completing assignments in a timely manner due to illness or other life situations. Once quizzes have been completed, they will be available for review for a 24-hour period. During this time, you can check your work and compare it to the answers, take notes, etc. Midterm and Comprehensive Final Exam Both exams are in class, paper, closed-book exams. There is one midterm and a final exam. Exams are designed to assess your achievement of the learning objectives. Students are required to work individually and independently in the exams. Exams will cover text readings, problems, assignments and lecture materials. Exams are also cumulative in that later material builds on earlier material (but will only cover the chapters identified in the schedule). Exams can consist of short problems, essays, analysis and decision making. Makeup exams are generally not given. Bring pencil, eraser, and a basic nonprogrammable calculator to the exam (cell phones may not be used as calculators). . 5 Use of Electronic Devices in the Classroom Computers: The use of technology is increasing in the classroom and can be a helpful tool; however, please limit use of your laptop or tablet to only class-related activities, such as taking notes or working with any class lecture notes and in-class exercises that have made available on Canvas. Any use outside of this constitutes unprofessional behavior. Cell Phones: Do not use during class. Disability Resources If you have, or think you may have, a disability (including an ‘invisible disability’ such as a learning disability, a chronic health problem, or a mental health condition) that interferes with your performance as a student in this class, you are encouraged to arrange support services and/or accommodations through Disabilities Services staff located in Loyola 100, (206) 296-5740. Disabilitybased adjustments to course expectations can be arranged only through this process.
