Windows system. For example, most system recovery solutions today cannot deal effectively with the following questions: • How will I remotely recover a complete server, desktop, or laptop without having to manually reinstall the operating system (OS), patches, service packs, or drivers? • How can I implement a scalable, centrally managed recovery solution that supports both my Windows® and Linux® servers? • Will I be able to streamline implementation of my managed system recovery solution through remote client discovery and central agent distribution technologies? • Will I be able to easily view the overall system protection status of my environment as well as quickly identify and drill-down to problem areas that need attention? • How can I recover a system to a completely different hardware platform with a different RAID controller, network controller, or processor type (cores, brands, count, etc)? • Will I be able to manage my backup storage resources through centralized monitoring, incremental backup technologies, compression, automated removal of expired backups, etc? • Will I have to shut down my Windows and Linux server systems to capture a recovery image?
console. • Dashboard status view and powerful filtering system enable quick identification of problem areas. • Policy-based implementation simplifies management of backup jobs across large numbers of systems. • Remote system recovery eliminates need for direct visit to affected system. • Storage monitoring allows prevention of storage saturation and backup failure. • Remote management of offsite data transfers and virtual conversions enhances disaster recovery protection.
• If there is no physical replacement system available, will I still be able to perform a recovery? • How can I manage and automate the transfer of system recovery data to off-site locations for disaster recovery purposes, without overburdening my production systems? • How can I leverage virtualization platforms like VMware® vSphere™ and Microsoft Hyper-V® for disaster recovery? • How can I recover virtualized systems back to physical once replacement hardware is obtained?

Solution Overview: Backup and Disaster Recovery Symantec™ System Recovery 2013 Management Solution Many of these key questions are often neglected until a critical recovery is required. The ideal system recovery solution should enable quick recovery of a system when needed, and should provide management of all phases of the system recovery process, including installation, backup scheduling, and monitoring of all backup and recovery operations from a central console. Symantec System Recovery is different Symantec System Recovery is unlike legacy recovery solutions that enable recovery from a traditional tape-based solution only after reinstalling the OS. Symantec System Recovery captures a complete, "hot" image of an active Windows system, and integrates with Microsoft® Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to ensure compliance with Microsoft best practices for OS and application protection. The image contains a complete snapshot of the system, including: • All OS files including the registry, drivers, patches, service packs, etc. • All user data files. • All applications installed. With the Symantec System Recovery image-based technology, you can be sure you have an exact image of any system you are protecting at the time of the backup to be used during a recovery. The Symantec System Recovery generated image can then be used to recover the entire system to: • The original hardware configuration. • Completely dissimilar hardware, including different RAID types, processor types, network controllers, etc. • Virtual environments, including vSphere, VMware ESX®/ESXi™, server, and workstation; Hyper-V. Symantec System Recovery manages the entire recovery process, including booting of the inoperative system, locating and installing the necessary drivers for different hardware, and resizing the disk during recovery for growing or shrinking a recovered volume partition. The power of the Symantec™ Management Platform As Symantec System Recovery becomes distributed in an organization's IT infrastructure, the importance of an effective, scalable, centralized management solution increases. Leveraging the power of the Symantec Management Platform (also known as the Altiris™ Notification Server from Symantec™), the Symantec™ System Recovery Management Solution delivers a highly scalable application for complete Symantec System Recovery management based on industry-proven technology. Symantec System Recovery Management Solution allows for the management of up to 10,000 remote Symantec System Recovery clients from a single management server and supports all product editions, including Server, Desktop, Small Business Server, Virtual, and Linux editions. Symantec System Recovery Management Solution can manage either a pure Windows environment or a mixed environment that includes both Windows and Linux systems all from a single console. The benefits of the Symantec Management Platform are already utilized by many Symantec customers today who manage thousands of systems and their applications worldwide. Additional information on the Symantec Management Platform and CMDB technology are available at the following link: http://www.altiris.com/Products/AssetCMDB.aspx. How the Symantec System Recovery Management Solution works Symantec System Recovery Management Solution was created to help organizations reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of Symantec System Recovery. It was designed to reduce the time involved in remotely recovering entire Windows and Linux servers, and Windows desktops and laptops in large organizations from a central location.
