T205 Digital Media Arts This document addresses the content related abilities, with reference to the module. Abilities of thinking, learning, problem solving and team work, communication, debating and defending are addressed by the system wide curricular practices at the institute. Module Description: Students will explore how digital technology has and continues to impact and enrich traditional media in this module. Emphasis is on generating an awareness of the underlying concepts, principles and factors that influence the design, implementation and delivery of content across a variety of platforms. Through a series of hands-on sessions, students will learn how facets of creative production can be effectively used to execute a creative concept via various forms of media. Module Objectives Following are the content related abilities strengthened by the curricular processes of the module: Explore innovations in digital technology Identify differences between analog and digital technology from the perspective of production, storage and delivery platforms. Understand the influence of stereoscopic sight/sound on development of acquisition tools (eg. increased definition, detail, accurate representation made possible through high definition technology) Understand the importance of appropriate management of data and information in the digital age. Understand the concept of time-based media. Understand the basic properties of digital media delivery platforms. Understand the differences between (and creative possibilities) presented by ‘fixed’ and ‘interpreted’ media. Use the Internet as a basic platform for synthesizing and presenting interactive content. Explore the impact of digital media on creation of aesthetic expressions Understand the impact that digital media has had on creative expression. Recognise aesthetic and creative potential that accompany media convergences (ie. video and the internet). Understand the relationship between content delivery and audience experience. Understand the impact of user experience on the creation process. Understand the effects of human memory and psychology on the design of interactive experiences. Recognise interactions between message, perceptions, and physical/cognitive responses. Understand how design and production work together to display different media within a web page (eg text embedded in image vs html text, getting it to look the way you want it to look and function.)

Formulate design strategies for the conceptualisation and realisation of new media works. Formulate approaches in organizing, managing and manipulating media data efficiently (ie. a workflow). Formulate approaches for efficient dissemination and distribution of work produced. Leverage on available digital media tools to realise creative concepts. Explore approaches (such as using the Internet) to realize creative and collaborative exchange.
Realise Digital Works – Acquisition Identify basic properties of indicative media acquisition devices. Understand basic principles of media acquisition and composition (such as Rule of Thirds, framing etc.) Understand the relationship between acquisition devices and sensory perception. Identify key factors that influence the quality of of acquired media (for instance quantity of light, noise, contrast, choice of subject, gesture etc.) Understand the use of meaningful human gestures in development of new media content. Formulate approaches (such as video tracking) to identify, capture and author meaningful human gestures. Realise Digital Works - Synthesis and Manipulation of Media Content Understand the importance of appropriate formatting of data for interactive use. Formulate strategies for manipulating media to realise an artistic idea/message (including analysis, synthesis, compositing, and cross media mapping). Understand that online content development and delivery can be achieved using a variety of programming languages. Be able to use basic indicative programming language for online content development and delivery (eg. HTML for web page creation, wiki for online collaboration etc.). Formulate appropriate strategies to manage data in online environments (Eg. wiki for collaborative content management). Be able to sort media data effectively and efficiently (eg into regions, media, bins etc.). Understand that the art of editing may be summarized as, 1) organisation of collected media elements in an editing system, 2) application of an appropriate decision making process for the choice of elements to use, 3) the positioning of the rushes in the time line according to some scheme (ie. script), 4) arrangement of collected media elements in multiple layers/tracks. Understand that online editing may be summarized as 1) the calibration of media elements collected in the time line; 2) the application of visual effects and 3) the addition of synthesized visual elements (ie. motion graphics) according to some scheme (ie. script). Understand that mixing audio may be summarised as 1) designing a scheme for prioritising all the arranged elements, 2) manipulations of these elements to conform to this scheme (including adjustments to levels, spatial position, equalisation, compression, and time smearing). Formulate approaches for organizing data into different layers for the purpose of editing/manipulation (eg different video tracks, audio tracks, .psd layers etc.).
Realise Digital Works – Content Distribution and Delivery Understand the relationship between platform choice and user experience/behaviour. Understand of the language of online content development and delivery. Understand how media is delivered and distributed using indicative platforms.
