TABLE TENNIS Individual Sports Columbus North Physical Education The Game: Table Tennis began in England. The game was born in the 1880’s when adherents of lawn tennis adapted their pastime to be played indoors during the winter months. “Whiff-Waff” and ”Ping-Pong” were just 2 of a number of games patented in England during the 1890’s. “Gossamer” was another early name for the game from which Table Tennis evolved/The International Table Tennis Federation was formed in Berlin in 1926 and international laws were adopted. Table Tennis became an Olympic sport in 1988. Basic Rules : 1. Eleven points constitutes a game, unless the score is tied at 10-10, in which case one player must win by a 2 point margin. 2. Play begins with one player serving and one receiving. 3. Play continues until one player fails to make a legal return. 4. If a player touches the playing surface of the table with any part of his body or clothing, his opponent wins the point. 5. A paddle can contact the ball legally only if the paddle is held in a player’s hand. 6. The serve changes from one player to another every time 2 points are scored, except when the score becomes tied at 10-10. At this time the serve changes and continues to change after each point until one player scores two consecutive points, thus winning the game. 7. The best way to keep score is for the server to call the score before he serves each time, always call the serving score first. 8. If a ball is broken during play, a new ball is put into play, the point during which it broke is replayed. 9. The ball may only bounce once on your side of the net. The Serve: 1. In serving, the server’s paddle must strike the ball behind the end line and between the sidelines (extended). 2. In serving, the ball must be held in the palm of the hand, visible to the opponent and with no spin being imparted to it by the hand. 3. If a player misses the ball completely when he is serving, it is a point for his opponent. 4. The server puts the ball into play by tossing it into the air from the palm of one hand and striking it with the paddle so that it hits his own court. The ball goes over the net and hits the receiver’s court. 5. Only on the serve does the ball go from paddle to court and then over the net. 6. The receiver must return the ball over the net so that it hits the server’s court. 7. Each server will serve 2 points before his turn is done. 8 If the ball hits the net on the serve and goes over, it is a “let” and the server serves again. However, if the second serve is a let, the server looses the point. TABLE TENNIS Page 2 Doubles Serving Order: 1. First 2 serves shall be delivered by the selected partner of the pair who has the right to serve and shall be received by the appropriate partner of the opposing team. 2. The second 2 serves shall be delivered by the receiver of the first five serves and shall be received by the partner of the first server. 3. The third 2 serves shall be delivered by the partner of the first server and shall be received by the partner of the first receiver. 4. The fourth 2 serves shall be delivered by the partner of the first receiver and shall be received by the first server. 5. The fifth 2 serves shall be delivered by the first server and the players shall thereafter serve and receive in the same sequence until the end of the game. Hitting Order The server must make a good serve and the receiver must make a good return. The partner of the server must make the next good return, and the partner of the receiver must make the next good return. The returns must be over the net but may be placed anywhere on the opponents’ court. The sequence of hitting continues in this manner until one player fails to make a good return. Safety Considerations: • Pay attention to the other players around you when you are swinging the paddle. • Partners should call for shots that may be played by either player. • Be aware of other players at all times. • Be patient and use good sportsmanship. • When a ball goes into the bleachers, use caution when climbing up or jumping down from the bleachers.
