to fire alarm system design
There are a number of documented standards that should be considered during the design and selection of the components that form the vital fire detection system. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 covers fire safety requirements applicable in the UK. The Fire Safety Regulatory Reform Order (RRO) applies to all premises where people meet, for example every office, shop, factory, warehouse, public residential premises including care homes, educational premises, restaurants, public houses, theatres, cinemas, stadiums, hospitals and public transport premises.

Compliance with the Fire Safety RRO is ensured through a Fire Risk Assessment by a “Competent Person” organised by the “Responsible Person” typically being the landlord, owner, occupier or manager. Related current industry standards must be used to ensure premises are appropriately and suitably equipped. Some industry standards for Fire detection systems at the time of this publication are:-

Industry standard third party accreditation e.g. CPD (Construction Products Directive) and LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) approvals, ensures the reliability of the equipment, being fit for purpose, and compliant with the law.

SYSTEM ZONING AND LAYOUT It is recommended that one of the first stages in fire alarm system design is to divide the property into precise areas or detection zones. This is a fairly straightforward process so long as the following criteria is adhered to: -
A zone should not extend beyond a single fire compartment.

The floor area of a zone should not exceed 2000m² other than an open plan area (e.g. uncompartmented warehouse) which should not exceed 10,000m².
-
A zone should not extend beyond a single floor area, therefore each floor level in a building will constitute at least one zone.
-
As an exception to the above, stairwells, lift shafts and other vertical shafts should be designated as an individual zone.
-
Small premises with multiple floor levels not exceeding an area of 300m² in total may be considered as a single zone.
-
The search distance in a zone should not exceed 60m from point of entry, i.e. that distance which needs to be travelled for a searcher to visually establish the position of the fire.

Whilst an optical detector provides the highest level of protection for point detectors it is susceptible to airborne contamination through dust or smoke generated typically in certain areas of manufacturing and kitchens. Careful consideration must be given to the selection of the most suitable detector for its particular environment. Whilst the best level of protection can be achieved with smoke detectors repeated false alarms may become a nuisance to the point that the alarm could be ignored, even disabled, with obvious risks to life, safety and property protection.

The various types of heat and smoke detectors are summarised below: OPTICAL (photoelectric) type smoke detectors provide the best method of smoke detection in stairwells, corridors, sleeping areas. They are designed to detect smoke particles that can be expected in such areas from smouldering and developing fires. FIXED TEMPERATURE heat detectors will operate when their rated temperature is exceeded. They are ideally suited to kitchen areas, boiler rooms, and hot industrial environments. RATE-OF-RISE heat detectors will detect an abnormally rapid heat build up that might be expected to occur under fire conditions.

NOTE: This can be made less complex with the use of remote indicators removing the necessity to open every door and inspect each room in a zoned area. Zoning should further take account of accessibility into an area and the heightened importance of any specific areas. On conventional control panels, zoning will also isolate the effects of faults occurring to a specific zone from the other circuits (on addressable systems, short circuit loop isolators will be needed to perform the same function on a specific loop).

MINIMUM SOUND LEVELS The minimum sound level of a sounder device should be 65dB(A) or 5dB(A) above a background noise which is louder than 60dB(A) (if lasting more than 30 seconds) and at a frequency of between 500Hz and 1000Hz.

For higher apexes, a device should be installed at the highest point. The distance to adjacent devices can be increased by 1% per degree of angle of the roof up to a maximum of 25%.

Manual Call points should be positioned 1.4m (+/-200mm) from floor level. Any nonmechanically protected cable medium should have additional protection.
Voids less than 800mm in height need not have independent coverage, unless fire or smoke is able to spread from one area to another through the void or risk assessment shows AFD (Automatic Fire Detection) to be necessary.
Unless MICC cable is used, all cabling should be mechanically protected from floor level up to a height of 2m.

A device should not be mounted within 500mm of any obstruction. If the top of a solid partition is less than 300mm from ceiling then treat it as a wall. Similarly, ceiling obstructions such as beams should be treated as walls if deeper than 10% of the ceiling height. A person should not have to travel more than 45m along an escape route to reach a Manual Call Point. Manual Call Points should be sited at all stair wells and exits from the building.
