There are several variables involved in tape drive errors. Very often you can resolve tape drive problems by: • cleaning the tape drive • using a new tape or cartridge • checking the software You should try these solutions before you contact Customer Service. For all problems involving read or write errors, please send the cartridge and the tape drive to Stratus so that they may be tested together. The tape media may be related to the failure.

Keep the following guidelines in mind when handling and storing tapes: • Store tapes vertically with a protective cover. • Apply only one label to the tape cover. • Make sure that the tape label is stuck. firmly to the recessed area of the tape and is not peeling away from the tape in any way. • Rewind all tapes fully before removing them from the tape drive. • Do not force cartridges in or out of the tape drive.

Tape Drive Maintenance
If the tape drive ejects the cartridge in fewer than 14 seconds or when all of the tape is wound on the right spool (look from the top, holding the tape as if inserting it in the drive), discard the cartridge. It may be old or defective.

If the tape drive continues to display the “Clean Me” message after several cleanings, the tape you are using may be contaminated. Try a new one. If the problem persists, contact the CAC.
