IP VIDEO SECURITY & SURVEILLANCE From retail theft prevention, to corporate identity access, to law enforcement, the demand for video security has increased dramatically over the past decade. Not only has the number of security networks increased, but so has their size. To support this demand, technology enabling these networks has advanced as well. Fiber optic cabling is one technology that has allowed these networks to increase their area of surveillance. Combined with the replacement of analog cameras with IP network cameras, fiber cabling allows these cameras to be deployed in more and more remote locations, beyond the reach of copper UTP cabling. Copper-based networks will benefit from traditional Ethernet media conversion as an affordable means to integrate fiber into their cabling infrastructure. Most IP cameras also support Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) technology, which makes installation of the cameras easier, since the camera can be powered over the same UTP cable used to transmit the video signal. PoE switches, PoE media converters, and PoE injectors are all available to create the functional network needed in today’s diverse video security and surveillance applications.
