ListenPoint® Room Module (RM) Placement Tech Note
Don’t miss a single sound.
The Room Module (RM) is a vital component in the ListenPoint® system because it provides a center point of communication/connection for LPT-M1 Microphone/Media Interface (M1), speakers, paging inputs and expansion sensors. Placement of the RM within a room is crucial for area coverage. The following information will cover key points that need to be considered before installing your ListenPoint® RM. Things to consider: • Coverage • Power availability • Cable management
Coverage The RM is the center point of all communication for the ListenPoint® M1. It is important that this unit is installed in a place that will provide equal room coverage. The RM will cover an area of approximately 30 ft. x 30 ft. (10 m x 10 m). The recommended placement for the RM is the center of the area that will provide equal coverage to all areas. In some installations where rooms are oddly shaped or larger than the 30 ft. x 30 ft. (10 m x 10 m), you may need to place the RM in an area where the M1s will be used the most, for example the front of the room where the instructor will spend most of their time speaking. You can add additional (up to 2) LPT-A103 Expansion Sensors that provide additional coverage for those areas that are oddly shaped or large. Here are some diagrams examples showing placement of the RM within a room:

ListenPoint® Room Module (RM) Placement Don’t miss a single sound.
Additional factors that would cause the need for LPT-A103 Expansion Sensors: • Larger rooms - greater than 30 ft. x 30 ft. (10 m x 10 m) • Oddly shaped rooms • Windows cover 50% or more of a wall surface • Dark or absorbent walls • Obstructions • Frequent dropouts occur • Black Ceiling • Ceiling height of more than 9 ft. (3 m)
Power Availability Power to R2 and R12 version RM’s is provided from the CU via a single Cat-5 cable. The cable from the CU can be run behind drywall, secured on the wall using channel moldings or cable clamps (refer back to CU placement for more details on the required cable run if needed). The maximum cable length for the Cat-5e is 75’ (25m), the Cat-5e cable that comes in a ListenPoint kit is 55’ (20m), so you’ll need to make sure the distance from the RM to the CU doesn’t not exceed your available Cat-5e cable length. Additional power is required for R22 version of RM. Power provided to these versions of Room Modules is a universal power supply (included) that can be located in the ceiling or remotely located using the LPT-A117 Remote Power Supply Kit (not included). This kit allows you to provide power from a remote location by converting the power supplies barrel connection to a Cat-5 cable (not included w/ kit) that can be ran to the RM.
Cable Management Cable management for the RM plays a smaller role in the placement. Devices such as expansion sensors, speakers, or connections to paging inputs, or relay connections already have cables in the ceiling that will need to be connected to the RM. Sometimes, there will be obstructions, such as air ducting, a beam or fire wall in the ceiling that will interfere with these cable paths to the Room Module. Removing a tile from a drop tile ceiling and looking on top of the grid will give you a better idea of these obstructions. You may need to run that cable around these items increasing the length of the cable. Keep in mind there may be obstructions between CU and RM. Once you have finalized the placement of your Room Module, please refer back to the Installation Guide to finish the install. The above information covered are things to consider that Listen believes will make your ListenPoint® system a quick, user/installer friendly and professional install. Please note that these are just suggestions that cover a basic room install and might not be useful for your room.
