SoccerSpecific.com Session Plan: 2v1 Session U9-U12 ACTIVITY #1 Set up: Technical Details Working in 2's Warm-Up: Set up a square grid approx 30x30yds. Split your team into two groups. One group is on the outside around the square with balls. The other group starts inside the square. This will begin a rotation. Instructions: 1. Players inside will check to players on the outside at an angle. They will receive the ball across their body facing the field. They will receive the ball then play it back. They will repeat with another player on the outside. 2. They wil check at an angle as before then play a 2v1. Players in the middle start with the ball this time. They play to an outside player then check then complete the 2v1. Once they complete it, they then switch to become an outside player. 3. Same as 2, but now they complete an overlap. The player that plays the ball will get it back turn and play into the overlapping run. Coaching Points: Focus on the details and quality! ACTIVITY #2 Set up: 2v1 to Endlines. Set up an area approx 15x20yds. Place one team on one corner and the other team on the opposite corner. Coach is master of the balls. Instructions: 1. Play a ball to one side or the other. The side receiving the pass will attack with two, and the side not receiving the pass will defend with one. Make sure to alternate which side you play to. A point is awarded when a player dribbles over the endline under control. Defending players can score as well. Keep the game moving quickly. Coaching Points: 1. Player with the ball should attack the defender at speed. Put the defender on their heels. Make the choice to pass or dribble to get around the defender. The defender will provide that cue based on body position. "What is the defender giving you?" 2. Look for the give and go and the overlapping runs. Keep score and make it competitive. ACTIVITY #3 Set up: Grid is approx 15x20 yds. 2 goals on each endline at the corners approx 3 yds wide. (Pugg goals can be used). Coach is master of the balls. Instructions: Exercise begins by coach playing the ball to one team. Coach should alternate which team receives the ball. Team receiving the ball will attack with 2 players and team not receiving the ball will defend with 1 player. Attacking team scores by passing the ball into either goal. If the defender wins the ball, they can attach 1v2 to the opposite goals. PROGRESSION: If the defender wins the ball they can play back to the next person in line and attack 2v2. Coaching Points: 1. Player with the ball must attack with speed to draw the defender. Decide to pass or dribble to get by based on the body position of the defender. 2. Promote give and go and overlap. 3. Introduce outside foot pass for deception and fake passes. 4. Keep score and make it competitive. SoccerSpecific.com Session Plan: 2v1 Session U9-U12 ACTIVITY #4 Set up: Grid is approx 30 x40 yds with 2 goals set on each end line. Pugg goals are great for this, but you can use cones too. Play is directional with teams attacking two goals and defending two. Coach is master of the balls. Instructions: Play 4v4 or 5v5 depending on your numbers. Players should be looking to use the space and switch the point of attack with an across field pass. Also encourage them to combine with give and go's and overlapping runs. They should finish with a good pass into the goal. Coaching Points: 1. Proper passing and receiving technique. 2. "See" the game and "find the space." 3. Focus on 2v1 situations. Provide extra points if a team completes a give and go or overlapping run. 3. Counter attack quickly when winning the ball.
