PDVD910 PORTABLE VIDEO PLAYER Read this manual before using your player. The PDVD910 is set to play Region 2 discs. USER MANUAL The player will accept the following formats (among others): DVD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-DA, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, Picture CD, SYMPTOM CORRECTIVE ACTION CONTENTS The following formats are not acceptable: No power • Check if the AC adapter of power plug is connected securely. • If powered with the battery, check if it is exhausted. No picture/sound • Make sure the connection is in good condition; volume is not too low; audio receiver or TV work normally; audio setting is proper. • Check if the TV type is correct. Toggle PAL or NTSC with the P/N button on the remote. Operate the INPUT/OUTPUT button. Improperly formatted CD-Rs or CD-RWs. This may include discs which are not finalised. The player has built in copyright protection technology. If a video recorder is connected to the player, the video output image may be distorted during recording. Interference or scrolling • Due to the effect of copy protection. Avoid connecting to a VCR or TV/VCR combination. Black & White picture • Adjust the vertical hold on your TV. Disc will not play • The DVD+-RW you played should be finalized. • ensure the disc is the right way up and correctly inserted. • Make sure the disc is free from scratches & fingerprints. • Insert a playable disc. (Check the disc type and color system). • Is the disc Region 2? • Clean the disc. • Cancel the parental lock function or change the parental lock level. (The Pre-set password is 3308.) • Reset the player. 22 UNPACKING The carton should contain: ! Portable DVD Player ! Analogue Audio Cable ! Combined Video & Coaxial Cable ! Li-P Battery Pack ! Remote Control ! External Power Adapter ! Operating Manual If any items are missing or damaged, contact your nearest TESCO store for a replacement. Have your receipt ready when you call. Retain the packaging. If you dispose of it, do so having regard to any recycling regulations in your area. before using the player open it and carefully remove the protective film covering the screen. Take care not to press on the screen while doing this. 3 PARENTAL SETTINGS PLAYING AN AUDIO CD Age related coding is on the disc. The player picks up this coding and allows or restricts viewing dependent on the control level set by the user. There are eight levels of control available as follows: 2: G; 3: PG; 4: PG13 5: PGR 6: R; 7: NC17; 8 Off The level progressively rises through the age groups until level 8 which is strictly adult viewing only. To defeat this control select Off Load an Audio CD into the player. The player reads the disc, downloads the Table of Contents (TOC). Most CDs will start automatically - a very few won’t ! Navigate UP a menu Speed search REVERSE BASIC OPERATION 1) To play an entire disc from the beginning ! Press ENTER/PLAY To change the Parental Control setting: Select PREVIOUS track, title Navigate to PREVIOUS item 2) To change tracks when a disc is playing ! Press NEXT to go forward one track at a time ! Press PREVIOUS to go back one track at a time When you reach the final track you cannot go to the first track using NEXT . Press PREVIOUS to go back through the tracks. Press PAUSE or SETUP: Enter the SETUP menu of the player INPUT/OUTPUT Use the player or external source MENU: Access root/title menu of a DVD ZOOM: Increase picture size The disc will pause to resume normal play. 5) To Mute the sound (not available at the digital audio outputs) ! Press MUTE. to toggle the sound on and off Highlight Parental, press PLAY (ENTER on the player) ! Select the Rating, press PLAY (ENTER on the player) ! Input the password at the prompt. Use the number keys on the handset. ! Press OK (OR press SETUP to cancel) ! If the password is accepted the rating will be changed. If the password is incorrect the rating will not be changed ! The default password is 3308 To change the password: Refer to the procedure on the previous page. Parental Settings should only be altered using the handset. 6) Stopping and Re-starting a Disc ! Press STOP. Press PLAY (ENTER) to start play from the track at which the disc was stopped. To play a stopped disc from the start of the disc: ! ! Select Track 1 using one of the methods shown here OR Open and shut the Disc compartment lid. ! CAPTIONS: Choose ON or OFF SCREEN SAVER: Choose between ON and OFF When the settings on this page are complete: ON SCREEN DISPLAY LANGUAGE Select the language, press PLAY (ENTER on the player) General Audio Dolby Video Preference Press to take you to the Page Headings at the top of the screen -- General Setup Page -TV Display Angle Mark Osd Lang SPDIF Output Captions Screen Saver LB On Eng Raw Off On Spanish -- Speaker Setup Page -- Downmix SPDIF OUTPUT (Digital audio output only) PCM: Use this for audio CDs: Raw: Use this for 5.1 DVDs. If you are not using the digital audio connections, select Off. NOTE: PCM outputs are essentially 2 channel outputs, though they may carry matrixed multi channel signals (i.e some VCD discs). Digital multi-channel signals (e.g. 5.1) are supported by the RAW format. Lt/ Rt Lt/Rt Stereo Stereo Choose STEREO unless you are connecting the player to a mono TV. Refer to your TV instruction manual for guidance. VIEWING A CAMCORDER ETC. Connect the supplied Stereo Audio Cable to the Audio Inputs of the TV set. This cable has WHITE and RED plugs. Connect the White plug to the LEFT socket and the Red plug to the Right socket. Connect the supplied Special Cable to the Composite Video Input of the TV. This is the cable with the YELLOW and ORANGE plugs. Connect the YELLOW plug ONLY. DVD Player Settings TV Display: to match your TV SPDIF Output: OFF Audio: Stereo Dolby: Stereo Video Component: TV Connect the supplied Stereo Audio Cable to the Audio Inputs of the Player. This cable has WHITE and RED plugs. Connect the White plug to the LEFT socket and the Red plug to the Right socket. Connect the corresponding plugs to the audio output of the camcorder etc. Connect the YELLOW plug to the video output of the camcorder etc. Connect the jackplug to the Video In socket of the Player. DVD Player Settings: Set the Player to INPUT mode using the INPUT/OUTPUT button on the player control paneL. Camcorder, etc: Set the device to PLAY mode to view and listen. You can also connect a MP3 player etc. via the audio cable only. BASIC AUDIO CONNECTION ADVANCED AUDIO CONNECTION Connect the supplied Stereo Audio Cable to the Audio Inputs of the TV set. This cable has WHITE and RED plugs. Connect the White plug to the LEFT socket and the Red plug to the Right socket. Connect the supplied Special Cable to the Digital Co-axial Input of your A/V processor. This is the cable with the YELLOW and ORANGE plugs. Connect the ORANGE plug ONLY. This connection will give you access to Dolby Digital and DTS multi-channel sound. You will still need to connect a TV monitor via the composite video connection! Alternatively you may use the player screen. DVD Player Settings TV Display: to match your TV SPDIF Output: OFF Audio: Stereo Dolby: Stereo Video Component: LCD/TV Now navigate to the DOLBY page Press PLAY (ENTER on the player) You will still need to connect a TV monitor via the composite video connection! Alternatively you may use the player screen. Repeat is available in Normal or Program play. REPEATING A CHOSEN PASSAGE (A-b Repeat) You can use this function to repeat any chosen passage ! Press A-B at the start of the selection (point A) ! Press A-B at the end of the selection (point b) ! The disc will repeat the passage continuously ! Press A-B to return to normal play ! A-B Repeat is available in Normal or Program play. CHANGING THE AUDIO SETTINGS OF A DVD DISC The player allows you to select a preferred language, TV and audio format from those included on the DVD video disc. Total ! Press AUDIO repeatedly. Audio Audio Channels Format Language The choices will cycle as follows ! First the Audio Formats Audio - 1/2 : AC-3 5.1 English Audio - 2/2 : DTS 5.1 English ! Then the Languages Audio - 1/2 : AC-3 5.1 French ! After you have entered the Audio - 1/2 : AC-3 5.1 German selection, the program will play with the new settings. Important Note: The player will support Stereo, and Dolby 5.1 formats. The player and the analogue outputs will only support 2 channel stereo encoding. (The analogue outputs will also support matrixed encodings) c d A Ab The digital outputs support Stereo and Dolby 5.1 encoded discs. If you choose an Audio format not supported by the player, there will be no sound output. In this case, change to a supported format to restore the sound. For instance nearly all DTS discs also include Dolby formats. SHUFFLE (RANDOM) PLAY ! Press SHUFFLE The player will play through the disc in random order ! Press SHUFFLE to return to normal play ! Shuffle play is available in Normal or Program play Shuffle SELECTING SUBTITLES ! Repeatedly press SUBTITLE to choose a language supported by the disc. Subtitle 1/02 English Subtitle 2/02 Subtitle French Off CHANGING THE CAMERA ANGLE ‘ON THE FLY’ ADJUSTMENTS ! ! Although the player’s Setup menu contains the system setups of Angle, Subtitle and Audio soundtrack selection, you may change them when a DVD disc is playing providing the disc supports these features. The disc’s Root menu will display the relevant information. In all cases the player returns to the system settings when you switch off the player or replace a disc. During playback of a DVD disc: Press ANGLE repeatedly to select the camera angle. A DVD disc may contain 9 angles. 2/3 PAL AND NTSC TV FORMATS ! 16 Press P/N to cycle the choice between the PAL and NTSC formats. If you select an incorrect format the picture may roll and distort. Change to a supported TV format to restore normal pictures. OPERATING FUNCTIONS Below is a quick guide to handset key functions. Press again to exit f MUTE Press to enter/leave the player setup menu. g REPEAT Repeat a track, repeat a chapter h A-B REPEAT Repeat a sequence between any two points of your choosing i PAL/NTSC Choose PAL/NTSC video system. (UK is PAL) j ANGLE Select different camera angles (if the disc supports the feature) 1) SUBTITLE Choose subtitles for a film (if the DVD disc supports this feature) P 1! ZOOM Change the size of the picture on screen. 1@ PLAY (ENTER on Player) P Press to confirm a selection from a menu, etc P 1# LEFT/RIGHT UP/DOWN Press to move through setup menus, etc. 1$ RESUME Press to resume play when the disc is paused. P 1% PAUSE (PAUSE /ON on Player) Press once to pause a disc, press twice to stop the disc. 1^ SHUFFLE Play tracks in a random order P 1& STOP Press to stop a disc while playing P 1* FAST FORWARD Fast forward search on a disc P 1( FAST REVERSE Fast search in reverse on a disc P 2) NEXT TRACK Press to move the disc successively forward one track at a time P 2! PREVIOUS TRACK Press to move the disc successively back one track at a time 2@ SLOW MOTION Confirm a selection 2# STEP (FRAME ADVANCE) Change the size of the picture on screen 9 2$ SETUP P Enter the Player SETUP menu. 2% AUDIO Press to choose the language of a multilanguage DVD soundtrack . 2* PROGRAM Program a disc in a sequence of your choice 2( GO TO Use to play a disc from selected tracks /time/ chapter. P 3) TITLE Press to access the title menu on a DVD disc 3! NUMBER KEYPAD 1 2 3 4 To select a number 0 to 9 enter the number. 5 6 7 8 To select numbers from 0 10+ 10-19 (e.g.11) press the 9 10+ key and then 1. To select a number between 20 and 29 press +10 twice followed by the number, and so on. INPUT/OUTPUT: Available on Player Only This switch enables you to play an external source such as a camcorder (See P 18). If you press the INPUT/OUTPUT switch when a disc is playing the disc will stop and the screen will go blank. Press the switch again to restore normal play. If you switch the power off when the player is set to INPUT when you switch on again, normal play will be restored. AUDIO MENU ! ! Press GOTO The SUBTITLE menu appears. Use the Press PLAY to confirm. French English Press GOTO to exit the menu and return to full screen view.If you press GOTO before you press PLAY the setup will not change. SUBTITLE MENU ! Navigate to SUBTITLE with the keys. Press PLAY to select Enter the angle number with the keypad. Press GOTO to exit. Menu Menu Title Chapter Audio Subtitle Bitrate 80 _/3 _:10:01 0:20:03 Off Title Elapsed 0:18:10 DIRECT SELECTION WITHIN A TRACK OR CHAPTER The MENU screen displays the time of the title and chapter currently playing. The current title length is 1:10:01 and the chapter length is 0:20:03. If you choose a different Title/Chapter these times will change. You can play a title or a a chapter within the title from any point. ! Select the title or chapter you require (see previous instructions) ! Navigate to Tt TIME or Ch Time with the keys . French English Bitrate 80 Title Elapsed 0:18:10 14 4) Fast Reverse Playback ! ! ! 11) Stopping the Disc 2x The STOP button has two modes. When a disc is paused the disc may be stopped but the laser is active. If the disc is paused for too long the surface may burn. A special stop mode is available which stops the laser and the disc but memorises the position. When PLAY is next pressed the disc picks up where it left off. Press Play Key ! Press STOP. The disc will stop To Continue ! Press ENTER or RESUME to continue play from the point at which STOP was pressed. Press repeatedly The speed cycles 2X 4X 8X 16X Normal Speed Press ENTER or cycle to Normal Speed to resume normal play. 5) Pausing a disc ! ! Press PAUSE (PLAY/PAUSE). The disc will pause Press PAUSE (PLAY/PAUSE or ENTER) to resume . 6) Frame Advance keys. Press PLAY to select the item. Repeatedly press STEP. ! The film advances on frame at a time. ! Press PLAY (ENTER) to resume normal play. (In Pause/Frame Advance the sound is muted) ! If you give the player an invalid command it will be ignored and a ‘No Entry’ sign will flash on screen. 7) Slow Motion ! Press SLOW ! Speed cycles 1/2X 1/4X 1/8X 1/16X 1X ! Press PLAY (ENTER) (or cycle to 1X)to resume (In Slow Motion the sound is muted) ½ TIME OUT If there is no activity i.e the disc is stopped or no disc is loaded, after a few minutes the player will power down. ! 8) Zoom: (In normal playback or Slow Motion) ! ! ! ! Press ZOOM repeatedly The picture magnifies 2X 3X 4X 1X Use the arrow keys to shift the zoom point Recycle to 1X to restore normal zoom. 2X Rotate the Volume Control on the Player 10) To Mute the sound (not available at the digital audio outputs) ! To re-start the player, press STANDBY on the handset or the ON button on the player. When you have finished always remove the disc from the player before switching off. If you are operating the player using the mains adaptor, unplug the adaptor from the player and the mains. 9) To alter the volume ! Press STOP twice. The message ‘Press PLAY Key to Continue’ disappears. The disc is now stopped. Press PLAY (ENTER or PLAY/PAUSE on the Player) to play the disc. Press MUTE. to toggle the sound on and off. 11 PLAYING A DVD - ADVANCED OPERATION Title Elapsed Current Title/ Total Titles ON SCREEN DISPLAY TITLE 01/03 CH 02/06 0:15:05 Current Chapter An On Screen Display (OSD) disc status indicator will be displayed at the top of the TV screen when certain functions are executed, or when the DISPLAY button on the handset is pressed. When different discs are loaded the indicators may change. Total Chapters PRESS Title Remain TITLE 01/03 CH 02/06 0:75:05 Total Time left on Disc PRESS ROOT AND TITLE MENUS Chapter Elapsed Load a DVD disc. 0:10:25 Time played on current chapter TITLE 01/03 CH 02/06 0:05:05 Time left on current chapter TITLE 01/03 CH 02/06 To display the ROOT menu: press MENU. The root menu displays the hierarchical structure of the DVD disc PRESS Chapter Remain To display the TITLE menu: Press TITLE. All the user choices available on the disc are driven from this menu. The title menu may contain one or several titles. THE ‘GO TO’ COMMAND The GO TO command can be used either to select a title or chapter by number. It can also be used to access the disc by directly entering the time The routine to access each parameter is as follows: FROM THE TITLE MENU: WHILE THE DISC IS PLAYING: ! Press GOTO ONCE TI 01/03 CH 02/06 ! Enter the Title (say 1) TI 01/03 CH 02/06 ! Enter the Chapter (say 3) TI 01/03 CH 03/06 The GOTO command enables access to a wide range of parameters and offers information not otherwise available. ! ! ! ! ! The disc will play from the start of Track 1, Chapter 3. To enter a number from 10 to 19, (say 17): Press 10+ 7 To enter 20 to 29, (say 27): Press 10+ 10+ 7 and so on. Press GOTO Access the wanted menu item with the keys on the handset Press PLAY on the Handset, (ENTER on player) to enter. ELECTING TITLE AND CHAPTERS If an item appears where there are no choices you will only be allowed to select the default item. SELECTING A TITLE OR CHAPTER WHILE THE DISC IS PLAYING: ! PRESS ! Press GOTO Press GOTO Menu Display OFF NOTE: On many DVD discs the TITLE and ROOT menus are the same. DIRECT PLAY FROM THE TITLE MENU ! ! ! Total Time played on Disc Title Chapter Audio Subtitle DIRECT ENTRY Press TITLE to display the TITLE menu Navigate to the title Press PLAY on the Handset, (ENTER on player) to play the chosen title. When a disc is playing: You can change chapters merely by pressing the chapter number Bitrate 80 To enter a number from 10 to 19, (say 17): Press 10+ 7 Menu The player will play the wanted track/chapter CHECKING THE OPERATIONAL STATUS The ON SCREEN DISPLAY can be configured to show the current title playing, the chapter being played and various time modes. From the TITLE menu: Enter a number. The player will usually take you to the start of the chapter indicated by the number you enter. If there is more than one title on the disc, entering a number may take you to the title. Press DISPLAY continuously to cycle the display modes. Refer to the drawings opposite: If you give the player an invalid instruction, this will be ignored and the player will display the ‘NO ENTRY’ sign. A cursor appears. Use the number keys to enter the wanted title or chapter. Enter numbers from 1-9 as 01, 02, etc. (Example: Enter Title No. 4) Title 0_/05 ! Press 0. The cursor moves to the right ! Press 4. Title 04/05 ! To cancel an entry: Press the key. Play of the chosen title or chapter commences immediately. The inset view at the top of the screen displays the new chapter, title etc. ! Press GOTO to exit the menu and return to full screen view or ! Choose another menu item with the keys. ! ! ! To enter 20 to 29, (say 27): Press 10+ 10+ 7 and so on. English English 1/3 1:10:01 0:20:03 Off Title Elapsed Title Elapsed 0:18:10 13 FUNCTION KEYS AND MENUS PLAYING A DVD - BASIC OPERATION DVD players use menus and there are three principal kinds: ! The TITLE shows the titles available on the DVD disc. On many DVDs the ROOT and TITLE menus are the same. The TITLE key accesses the DVD disc’s TITLE menu. AUDIO ! ! ! LANGUAGE The ROOT menu is the basic menu of a DVD disc and contains all the information relating to the DVD disc itself. This menu loads when you first insert a disc. To access this menu at other times, press the MENU key TITLE 2 ! TITLE 1 The player itself has a SETUP Menu which enables you to set up the various parameters of the player. The SETUP key enables you to set up the player. -TV system, languages, parental controls, etc. CHCHAPTER APTE R 2 TITLE 1 of 2 ! ! 1of 5 of 5 DVD discs will display the ROOT or TITLE menu. In exceptional cases where there is one title and nothing else the disc may play. Each TITLE is subdivided into CHAPTERS. So by knowing the right command you can play the whole disc, or any part of the disc as you choose. Pressing or will take you up or down in the same menu list.
